Covert Operations released

Covert Operations is now ready to download from http://download.sourceforge.net/edge/covert-ops-v1.0.zip
You should also go to http://edge.sourceforge.net to get the latest news on EDGE and make sure you get EDGE 1.24. We cannot guarantee that Covert Ops will work with earlier versions of EDGE, nor that it will be fully compatible with later versions of EDGE.

Covert Ops will definitely not work with zdoom, boom, legacy or any of the other doom engine apart from EDGE. You have been warned.

We hope that people enjoy the full version of Covert Operations, and apologise for the time taken to get to this stage. We aren't planning on doing anything more with this project - at least not for the time being. However we've decided to place no restrictions on the use of Covert Ops. Please feel free to use our code, graphics etc. We'd really love to see people making extra levels (which we'd be happy to post on this site) or otherwise doing cool things with Covert Ops. In particular, it would be great to see a counterstrike style multiplayer mod - terrorists vs special forces.

Let me just say that we don't expect that everyone will like Covert Ops - but if you don't like it, then please just remove it from your system. Don't bother e-mailing us to complain. We really don't care. Of course, if you love Covert Ops, then don't hold back - let us know all about it.

I should note that the Covert Ops DDF and RTS files are incredibly easy to edit (well, much easier than dehacked). So if you want a gun to fire faster or slower or whatever, then go read the DDF docs on the EDGE home page and modify the game as you would like it. If you think we should have included a feature, then try playing around with EDGE a bit and see if what you are proposing is even possible.

Anyway, this is about it. A big thanks to the team of EDGE coders - who have given up a lot of their spare time to create a pretty damn fine engine (which by all indications is only going to keep getting better). Thanks also to the EDGE guys for listening to our suggestions and modifying EDGE so that we could put in a lot of cool features. Also a big thanks to Marc Pullen of qdoom fame - for doing our page updates and for the chance to swap cool DDF and RTS ideas (as well as for giving us sneak peaks of qdoom!).

Is Covert Ops Dead?

Short answer is that Covert Ops is still alive - despite the fact that we have been very quiet recently. We are planning to release Covert Ops within the next few days. We have made the decision to remove translucent breakable glass. as this feature does not work perfectly with EDGE 1.24. We feel it is better to remove this feature rather than keeping people waiting for the next version of EDGE.

We have tested Covert Ops with the DOS and Win32 versions of EDGE 1.24. We cannot guarantee that Covert Ops will work properly with any other versions of the EDGE engine. At this stage, we are planning not to do patches for further releases of EDGE, although we might change our position depending on how well Covert Ops is received.

As previously noted, Covert Ops will be released into the public domain. Meaning anyone is free to do anything they like with the maps, graphics, animations etc. We will also include DCK files for anyone who wants to make their own Covert Ops maps. We may also include some maps and other bits and pieces that didn't make it into the final version.

We are happy to do interviews with any sites that are interested, and may provide reviewers or major news sites with a full preview copy of Covert Ops. Hit the e-mail address below if you are interested.

Where is Covert Ops?

Indeed. That is the question. Well, we are still around. Despite the fact that everyone from Elvis to the Dalai Lama bagged out the demo of Covert Ops.

Anyway, we are hoping to release very soon. We are just tidying up some final bits and pieces, and if things go smoothly, we should release Covert Ops shortly after EDGE 1.24 goes out.

We acknowledge that some people were less than impressed by the demo. We don't claim to (nor want to) please everybody. Some of the suggestions we received were reasonable, others impossible, some totally lame and others we simply ignored.

However, one major issue did seem to come up - the issue of levels. For the record. Covert Operations still includes some 6-7 modified maps from Twilight Warrior. But there are 16 random enemy configurations on each and every map. Now bBecause EDGE was a 'team only' beta for so long, we couldn't get a team of mappers together. EDGE has now been publicly released, but getting extra maps done would probably take another few months. Sidearm and I both have busy jobs, and don't think we will be able to put in the time required. But if you want extra maps, then please read on...

Covert Operations is going to be released into the public domain. This means that you can do whatever you like with the graphics, textures, sounds, DDF or RTS code. If you think you can do a better job than us, then wait till we release and then please feel free to try.

We will also place modified DCK files on the download page, just in case someone feels like doing some 'user levels' for Covert Ops. It should also be possible to use other editors (with modifications) to edit maps for Covert Operations. We will happily put any good 'add on' maps on this page.

At this stage, it looks like Covert Operations will be our last doom project. We've been doing doom stuff for over four years, and it is really time for a break. We like Covert Operations, and we have great fun playing it. We hope at least some of you will enjoy it too. So keep an eye out for the release.

A SLICE OF THE ACTION

Pending the release of the EDGE engine, we will shortly have a demo version of Covert Operations available to download. The demo includes 1 small map, 3 weapons and a few of the enemies from the full version of Covert Operations.

The aim of the demo is to give you an idea of what the full version of Covert Operations will be like. For this reason, the demo shows only a few of the many great features that will appear in the full release.

I can also say that we have recently put a great deal of time into working on the full version of Covert Operations. Our work has proceeded extremely well. At the moment, we are simply tweaking a few minor elements, and expect to begin beta testing the full version shortly. Please note that we will be inviting people to beta test for us. Please do not e-mail us to volunteer your services as a beta tester.
