My Doom Experiences

I am a Doom fanatic, plain and simple. I first played Doom on my friend's 386, and I was hooked from the start. I always played with the codes on because I only got to go over his house every once in a blue moon so I wanted to have some fun. Eventually he scrapped that computer and got a Pentium 120 which gave the game a much needed speed increase. I got used to the faster speeds, started to memorize the levels, and really got good at the game. Now mind you I wasn't the best player out there, but I did know a ton of stuff to the game. I mean I knew so much(too bad it was only about the shareware version) that I was actually picked on in school for being such a nut. Wow, so I memorized a bunch of codes and could play the levels.

Anyway, my friend eventually got Doom2, and I loved that one just as much as the first. Then came Quake and Quake 2, but since I didn't have a computer and he never got them, I couldn't play them, so I was still stuck playing Doom. Eventually my family finally got a computer, and I immediately installed Ultimate Doom(I bought the cd before I had a computer I was so obsessed with the game) and began having a blast. Then my brother got Half-Life, and I was blown away by the graphics and things that the game did as far as guns and stuff. It took me a while to get used to using the mouse and keyboard cause I only used the keyboard while playing Doom. Then we got Quake 2. Yeah I know it's like a step backwards, but we had to play it cause it was supposed to be the best online experience out there. Well, low and behold, I hated the DM experience online. I thought it was too cheap and definately favored the rocket toting freak then the sleak one with the shotgun. But I did love the mods they had for it, so I guess it isn't that bad.

Anyway, during this whole time I still never forgot about Doom, and when I was starting to play Half-Life and Quake 2 online, I also started playing Coop games with my friends over dial up. We never did have access to a network or anything, so it was only 2 players at once, although that is still the smoothest multiplayer I've ever played, no slowdowns or sync errors. We went through Doom2 and started on Ultimate Doom, but never finished UDoom. After a while I convinced my friend Anthony, the one who got me hooked on Doom in the first place, to try out deathmatch since he's never tried it before. We decided to keep the monsters there just for a little added fun. We played that game for over three hours that night having such a blast. After the first level(doom2) I was winning with a score of 32 to 16(rough guess). The second level proved to be his level. With all of the monsters there on Ultra Violence it was extremely hard to get to a gun alive to kill him, but man, it was so rewarding when I finally did get to kill him. We were on that level for more than an hour and a half. He wound up winning that level with a score of 46 to 22, however later I found out he was using DGold4BT.wad so he could see everything like normal which is why he got the rocket launcher so easily.

About a week or so after that, Ron, a kid who lives about three houses away from me, challenged me to a DM game in Doom 2. I immediately accepted and was extremely eager to play him mainly because he was talking to much trash it wasn't even funny, and I knew that I could easily take him. It took us a while to get the game setup because frankly he's a moron who can't get things setup right. Finally we get into the game, and it's just us, no monsters. I housed him in the first level with a score of 16 to about 5(lucky rocket blasts to my back). Then we get into the second level, and not even five seconds into it he runs to the exit to end it, guess he didn't want me getting any of the goodies there.

Then we head to The Gantlet where I really started to tear him a new asshole. I mean around every corner we met he didn't come out in one piece. I asked him if he actually uses the game sounds to tell where I am and what I'm using, but he said "I don't have my speakers on". Okay, what a moron I was thinking about then, no wonder it was so easy. So he turned em on and I was ready for him to bring it, too bad his idea of bringing it is letting me shove my double barreled shotgun down his throat. Even with sound he played no better than before, still walking into the same stuff, standing in one spot not moving while he shoots, almost happily accepting my buckshot.

Finally, the level to end the match: Dead Simple

You'd think with a name like that you'd easily be able to put up a good fight. His only mistake was saying that I'd been lucky up until then. Uh uh, you don't say that to someone who is whuppin your ass. I busted so many caps in his ass it wasn't even funny, and in about 6 mins he ended the level with me housing him 35 to 0. And I wasn't a cheap ass and only using the rocket launcher. That's not me, I kept switching guns on him and using everything I had(when I had time to actually get away from him spawning where I can see him). I mean every gun that I got my hands on(considering I went into the level with almost every gun there) I blasted him with. Now I'm not saying that I'm the best player out there, cause I know I'm not, but I just had the skill to use the guns properly and he didn't. I mean with a plasma rifle at pretty close range you're supposed to be able to fry your opponent pretty quick. Not in his case, if he was even lucky enough to get a plasma rifle, I made him lose it in about three seconds with my chaingun, rocket launcher, plasma rifle, sawed off, or whatever I had on me. Needless to say the next day he wasn't talking trash at all, but he had so much fun that he wanted to go at it again. We never did get that game setup due to technical difficulties, but that was by far the most fun I've ever had in a DM, mainly because I was able to show up a trash talker.

The legacy still goes on today and I still play Doom, although I'm heavily into Half-Life too. I don't play the base Doom much though, I've given that up for mods like ZDoom cause of the bonuses you get like mouselook and no autoaim(yes, finally a skillful hand is required to hit targets in DM) and particle effects. Plus ZDoom has the most effective and coolest chasecams I've ever seen. Finally one that does the job right, shows you the action and doesn't get stuck in tight areas. And with the IP address multiplayer game support I can play it with my friends at home and at college(although it will never be as fast as those dial up modems).

Out of all of my friends I'd say I'm the most skilled when it comes to Deathmatch in Doom mainly because I had the chance to play HL and Q2 before I played Doom DM, and since those games are tougher you tend to play better at the older games when you go back. I mean they still give me a run for my money in matches, but I come out on top overall, however Anthony is really getting better at it thx to HL.

Long live Doom and may the mods be a plenty.
