I'm sort of new to online gaming, and i want to get a game of doom2 working with my friend over the internet. Can you guys give me some hints/advice/directions on where/what/how to get started??
Ideally i'd like to play over the internet, as in log seperately and start playing, exchanging ip's or whatever!! which software etc would i need? is about 45kbs enough for doom2?

Get doomserv 5 http://www.doomserv2000.com and zdoom http://zdoom.notgod.com , install doomserv, create new account then you and your friend can both join the front end and organise a game

well your going to need a port that has client sever support.
three ports come to mind here
zdeamon

skulltag
ask just about anybody around here where to get them and thay most likly will tell you. but im to lazy to remember url's to every friggen file for doom so
