Review: Action DooM

This review is of the ZdooM version – I’ve yet to try the Legacy version.

This wad was a bit unusual to review, as it doesn’t contain a level, but a weapons modification. Still, I thought it was cool and not getting enough coverage, so review it I will. Action DooM is – to quote the author – “Action Doom2 is based on, but in no way affiliated with the very fun Action Quake and Action Half-Life series. The premise is that through deathmatch, you and your friends can live out the cool firefights and shoot-em-ups straight out of your favourite action movies”.

Well, sounds like a grand idea to me – and it works. The graphics are great, but the author makes a point of covering his ass on the webpage – they are not his own work, but modifications of other people, who he credits. Whoever made the graphics, they’re great and set the mood perfectly. The only slightly dodgy ones are the hand cannon – which is a nastily modified super shotgun – and the Katana, which seems a little out of mood of the mod.

The hacks themselves are great. The weapons feel like their real life counterparts (at least I assume they do, not being prone to shooting people myself), and there are many extra features. The grenades from the launcher bounce, like Quake grenades, or can be thrown by hand for better aim but shorter range. Another nice idea is the M16, which ejects it’s shells as it fires, which then lay on the ground afterwards. After a longish deathmatch, the floor can be covered in those little shells.

All in all, a great idea well executed. The skins wad provided is also great and very handy seeing as Skin Connection is down at the minute. Now all we need is some gritty realistic levels to play it on – Fbase 4 suits it pretty well, but we need more, damit.
