Review: Boom

If you had to ask your average Doomer what was the big granddaddy of the source ports, he would most likely say “Ol’ Granpa Source Port”. However, after you’d hit him round the head with a wet kipper a couple of times, he might finally concede that it was Boom.

Of course before that, there was Doom 95, id’s own front end, which allowed high resolutions and um… that was about it. Team TNT were the first people to really bring Doom into the next century, and that’s had a pretty important effect on the community ever since. Initial stuff they did wasn’t too exciting (fixing bugs and stuff), but what Boom (lovely name, by the way, isn’t it?) really provided was not any extra playable functions (that is, the original Doom levels played exactly the same), but extra editing functions. Some of you young bunnies may not remember this, but once upon a time, we didn’t have deep water, oh no. We had a funny flat thing that didn’t even splash. These extra features, that also included translucent textures and conveyer belts, have become a part of the modern Doom level style.

The port feels very old school now, as it’s being over taken by the likes of ZDooM, and new boy on the source port block, edge. Whilst this may go down well with some more of the traditionalist Doomers, it seems to be losing friends amongst the new crowd. The major problem is that ZdooM provides all these features, and more, with extra playable functions. Since TNT have refused to implement things like mouse-look and jumping,, this trend may sadly continue.

Still, we mustn’t forget our roots, must we? Boom is as much a part of the heritage of this community as the original Doom exe.
