Review: Yesterday's Brownies

NB: Whoops… I initially reviewed this level without knowing who it was by… turns out it was by Iikka "Fingers" Keränen. Not anyone too well known, then (doh!). A proper download link is now provided.

The very oddly named “Yesterday’s Brownies” – a reference to the equally silly named "Farewell to Fudge Brownies" – is the work of of Iikka "Fingers" Keränen, who has come back to Doom one last time. I think this level got unfairly panned on Team Insanity (when it was still around) because of Quake/Doom enmity, but get past that and it’s a good level.

You can tell that this WAD was made by someone who loves Quake – not in the textures, which are partly normal textures and a few custom ones, but not a trace of Quake – but in the style of the level. The level has a weird layered effect, as you can see from the screenshots, which really gets you thinking in three dimensions – it’s a really well accomplished piece of work, and many is the time I’ve been sniped or ambushed by someone above my head. Very cool.

The architecture in this level is superb. I think it’s benefited from coming from a source outside of the normal community (not to mention a professional), and so doesn’t resemble anyone’s else’s style. The texture choice throughout is good, and the custom textures add a nice edge. The 3D effects, which are some of the best I’ve seen, are awesome.

Where this level falls down is the gameplay. I don’t know what it is, but however, great it may be to gawp at on your won, it ain’t no fun with friends. There’s nothing specially wrong with it, it’s not to big or small, it doesn’t have any stupid traps. It just gets kind of boring after a while, which is a pity.

Whatever the problems, it’s a classy piece of WAD making, and Kudos is due.
