I’m reviewing this WAD with a dedication – Cyb, one of the most prominent and outspoken members of the Doom community, not to mention the author of Doom, Damnit has buggered off and left the community. This is one of his coolest levels, so here it is…
Bullet Train is inspired by the “high speed” maps from Unreal Tournament, where you had to battle it out on a moving train. “Surely such a level would be impossible in Doom!” I here you cry. Not at all – I’m not sure how he did it, but with some very nifty ACS magic, this appears to be very much a moving train – it even keeps on moving if you fall of it, into the horizon – like Cyb himself (sob).
This isn’t a perfect level as far as Deathmatching goes – but that’s not really the point. As the man himself says, “It plays okay but if anything the effect is spiffy”. That’s pretty much the deal. I’ve been playtesting it with bots (I do have friends, but they don’t Doom, in case you were wondering), and with only two players it gets a little slow. It can be a lot of fun – and very manic with four or more players though. It works very well with the Action Doom patch, as suggested by Afterglow last week.
The architecture is pretty functionary, if nothing fantastic, but you get the feel that you’re on a train – one of my few complaints is that it would have been nice to see more scenery rather than just that stone wall flying past.
One of the last WADs from one of the most interesting characters in the Doom community is certainly something to be remembered by – perhaps sometime someone could incorporate this sort of level into a single player game. Now that would be cool.
