If there is nothing else that this mod can be rewarded for, it’s the originality of it’s idea. Fortunately, there’s plenty that this mod can be rewarded for, as it’s really good. Okay, lets try and explain this to the uninitiated.
The basic deal is that this is a deatmatch mod, in which you fight with monsters instead of weapons. You spawn monsters by punching, and this takes up your magical energy, called Mana. The more powerful the monster you’re trying to spawn, the more mana it uses. You then have to collect mana (which are represented as little glowing balls) to spawn more monsters in the hope they’ll go and frag your opponent, who’s also building up a little private army. This is where the strategy element comes in – do you just spawn five Mancubi and hope for the best or do you hang back and build up to a mean motherf***ing Cyber Demon to see of your opponents wimpy demons? The decision is yours.
This can be a lot of fun – It’s got a kind of command and conquer feel to it. It’s based around Legacy, so of course it looks fantastic, and seeing the monsters splat each other up against the wall is very satisfying. The only real problems that I can see are…
(a) It’s a pain in the ass having to put mana into levels…
(b) There’s no bot support.
Bots (y’now you love them) whould have made this great mod a fantastic one. There used to be bots in older versions of the beta, but that’s no longer available. If I manage to get hold of a copy, I’ll let you know.
All in all, this is a great mod in the spirit of Spice ZDooM. It’s a real shame that Yoghurt isn’t developing it anymore, as this had a huge amount of potential.
