Apparently, this WAD was kind of controversial a while ago, due to some textures or something… can’t say I’ve heard anything about it. But lets not talk about that (God knows it’s been talked about enough), lets talk about the wad itself.
Peel back the layers of contorversy and you’ll find Execution is that rare thing, a released megawad, and a pretty damn good one too. I was epescially pleased when I hear it was being released, as I’d never heard of it in the first place - it was a nice surprise. The fantastically gory (and very nicely painted) title screen raises a giggle, and sets the mood for some fast and furious deathmatching.
The levels are all perfectly balanced for two players, which makes a change from the majority of huge deathmatch wads available at the minute - I’m not saying anything - and there’s rarely a moment where you’re not shooting (or running away).
The architecture is never less than interesting, and as you can see from the screenshots, often very good indeed. Nick Baker’s level in particular stands out (it’s the second screenshot), but the total standout of the wad is Vicious Killer’s (subtle nickname, btw) Plague, which can be seen in the third screenshot. The architecture in this level was so perfect I often got shot whilst I was gawping.
The textures are also well used. I spotted no texture misalignments, and they fitted the theme well. My only critisicm is that a bit more variation in the textures would have been nice – whilst it’s all well and good to set a theme for your wad, some of the levels looked a tad too simmilar. All in all, it’s great fun wad, if not particularly ground-breaking.
