A guy named Charger e-mailed me and asked me to review his WAD. I like to think of myself as a public service broadcaster (do American’s get that joke, or is it just a BBC thing?) in my moments of egotism, and so I figured – why not?
The deal is this. This is a level set in and around the author’s house – we’ve all made those WADs at some time or another, right? I tell you one thing, I’m not going to this guy’s house for afternoon tea… dead bodies in the garage? What is this, Elephant Butte?
The problem with this level, which is actually more of a problem with the whole I’ll-make-my-house-into-a-deathmatch-level genre is that houses aren’t that interesting. When the architect built your house, he probably didn’t have deathmatch strategy in mind – I hope – and this shows. There’s none of the normal Doom style to it.
That’s not the author’s fault, though. What is his fault is the choice of color scheme – we need to get the cast of Changing Rooms in here quick. Let’s see… the walls in the kitchen are wood, the walls in the bedroom is wood, the wall of the garage (?) are wood, the floors are wood. Does anyone else see a theme here? No? Ah, nevermind.
What’s actually surprising is that this WAD is kind of fun to play, despite some dodgy wood-orientated texture choices. It’s unnerving because it feels as if this is someone’s house, and you’re chain-sawing them in it. Kind of sick, kind of scary – like watching the Evil Dead, also kind of fun.
Worth a look, but I’d rather play something by Afterglow to be frank.
