Review: Ichiban

To tell you the truth, I was going to review one of the maps that Bjoernar Johansen released this week as the main review. After all, he’s a professional designer, so they should have been fun. Well, they weren’t. In fact, they were so bore-the-shit-of-you dull that I’ve gotta go change my pants. Basically I couldn’t be bothered to play through and then write the review, so here’s the summary review. Boring 2/5. That’s what you get for releasing five-year-old wads. Why did they all start on different levels? What’s wrong with starting on level one? Huh? Huh?

Instead, here’s a level by ZDoom god, Rick Clark – and for those of you who don’t know who he is, you really haven’t been paying attention in class, have you? In the text file he says he’s been watching to much anime – and I’m inclined to agree, as the influence can be felt. Still, if this is what anime overdosing does to your levels, I’m off down the video store.

This is a cool level. The best term I can think of to describe it is immerse – you really get into it. In fact, you get into it so much, I don’t want to be reviewing it, I want to be playing it again. It’s set in a sort of cubic space station, with a vaguely industrial feel – anime all the way, then. The architecture is admittedly kind of blocky, but we can let Rick off on the Picasso argument – he knows what he’s doing, so when he does it blocky, there must be a reason. There is, too – it suits the industrial feel – rounded crates just don’t happen that much.

The game play is very fun, with lots of dashing about to get the cool weapons, especially the centrally located plasma rifle. This is one of those levels that gets you thinking in 3D, I’m not sure how – but it does. Even though there’s no true 3D, it feels as if there is, which is important in Doom. Also, a cool secret area where you climb into an air vent and collect lots of cool stuff makes it feel like more than just a daft arena.

In short, damn cool spacey Zdoom deathmatching action, with family fun to be had for all (though there is a height restriction). It could have been done as a normal Doom 2 level without any major changes, but hey – what is Wildman if he isn’t Zdoom? Right, screw this, I’m off to play it again.
