I’m trying to get into ZDooM and ACS scripting at the minute, and I remembered that Cyb brought out a script heavy WAD not too long ago that I never got round to playing. So off to his page I went…
Now, he says not to take it too seriously… which is some pretty good advice considering the whole WAD is as mad as a hatter. And not just your average hatter either, but a really crazy one.
The plot of the WAD goes like this… you’re a vaguely cute little alien thing called Massmouth, who is employed by a giant wormy thing who speaks in an echoy, and slightly perverse sounding, voice and sends you on missions throughout the galaxy. Are you still with me? No, probably not.
Strange as it may be, it’s a hell of a lot of fun. The game play isn’t for all you DooM gods out there who eat demons for breakfast, though – apart from the last level, where you face up against some nasty aliens, this WAD is very firefight light. Personally, I pretty much suck at heavy firefights, and so I found the puzzle solving elements, which are reminiscent of the old “Dizzy” games, an entertaining way of playing DooM.
It’s not even the game play that shines through, though, but the trademark Cyb humour. There’re some great in-jokes here, both about DooM – the mini baron of hell – and just about everything else, including Bill Gates. The ACS stuff is great, and really adds to the atmosphere – hearing Security guards yacking about a coke machine is pretty much the right level… I’m not sure what the hell that giant demon is about, though. I’m sure Cyb does, though, and is laughing away to himself as we speak.
In short it’s a great diversion from the hack ‘n’ slash of conventional levels, but it’s quite easy and your average DooMer will be left wanting more. Still, there are some great gags.
