Review: QDooM Public test

I couldn’t really let this go without reviewing, now could I? One of the most anticipated TCs in quite some time, QDooM is, according to Fanatic’s site this close to being finished. Although I think it has a lot of potential, and is one of the more exciting ports around at the minute, I’m not a big fan of Edge in it’s current status.

QDooM, though, it seems has been worth the wait - mostly. The true 3D effects are simply amazing – it’s great to see a true 3D bridge that really looks like a bridge, rather than a horizontal ladder. It’s easy to get immersed in the game play. That is, until you see the sprites. The death-knight sprites are on the tests true fall downs. I assume Fanatic squashed them down from the original Quake models, and they look like it – they’re horrible. It’s a pity, because the weapon sprites look so good – and this makes the poor quality of the death-knight sprites all the more shocking.

QDooM’s main problem, though, is that it’s not Quake, and never will be. I know it was never intended to be, it was meant to be “Quake done Doom style”. No matter what’s it meant to be, it’s always going to be compared unfavourably to Quake – schoolyard Quake Vs Doom alliances aside, Quake had the better engine, no doubt about it. In fact, the main reason that Quake wasn’t as good as Doom were that we liked the bad guys and weapons from Doom better, in my opinion. So what’s the point?

I don’t want to shout Marc down – I think he’s a boon to the community and you can see that there’s been an immense amount of work that’s been put in here. I just wish he’d created something completely original with the same amount of effort, rather than try and emulate an inferior game.
