Review: Survival

Survival, the brainchild of Doom guru and all round top chap Rick Clark, is an odd beast. Rick himself describes it as “a sort of Tekken for Doom”, which is certainly an interesting way of putting it. Eschewing conventional Doom gaming, Survival pits you one on one with a monster, with only minimal weaponry to defend yourself in a tiny arena.

So, a good idea, no doubt – but does it work? Well, yes and no, as always. Yes because it does what it says on the tin, and the ACS scripting takes care of the whole thing very well – but then what is Rick Clark if he doesn’t know how to write a damn fine line of ACS.

There are, however, a few problems. Problem number one is you’re stuck in just one arena, which isn’t stunningly designed. Perhaps locating it in a more conventional deathmatch level would have been a better idea. However, the arena level did get me nostalgic, as I remembered trying to make one for myself on Deth many years ago. It didn’t work, by the way.

Problem number two is that it’s far too hard. Pitting you against imps with your fists is fine, but in the tiny arena even the most talented of players would have a hard time against a Hell Knight when armed only with a machine gun – I certainly did, as you can see from the screenshots.

Problem number three is that it’s just not that fun. It’s too much of a departure from the normal Doom style, and that’s going to grate with most people.

However, it is a very original idea, there’s no denying that. Rick is, to the best of my knowledge, working on the sequel, which will be interesting if nothing else.
