Review: Twilight Warrior

This fantastic little TC is the most realistic DooM WAD I've ever played. You play a special forces soldier sent in to deal with terrorists in various situations, some based on real life occurences (according to the read-me file, anyway). The level design is superb, and is one of the first TCs to gain the covetted levels-that-look-like-real-places feel, as demonstrated in the screenshot above, which shows an airport lounge from the counter hi-jack mission.

One of the most interesting changes to the game play, is the fact that not all missions are completed simply by getting to the end of a level and switching a switch. For example, in one level you are charged with assassinating a mad military dictator, and the level ends as soon as you kill him. There are also some characters, hostages, that you are not meant to kill. Unfortunately, as all that happens when one dies is that the level ends, this feels like more of a reward than a punishment.

The weapons are also excelently hacked, all behaving far differently from the original DooM weapons - the sniper rifle is a blast. One word of warning though - don't play this WAD without the attached DEH file - it all gets very confusing. Well, okay, try it once to see what I mean.

There are, however, a couple of let downs in this TC. First of all there are only 10 levels, and no big "You Win!" celebration at the end, which leaves you feeling a little cheated. Secondly, some of the graphics are a bit dodgy. the terrorists in particular are really bad. It's odd, as the weapons are great, and so are the texture graphics. The perils of working with more than one artist, I suppose.

All in all, though, this TC rocks, and is especially fun in co-op mode, because you get to shout "Cover me!" a lot.
