Designed as a tribute to the original Doom E2M2 level of the same
name, SailorScout's Containment Area is, simply put, about the best
thing I have ever played for Doom2. The original Containment Area was
one of my favorite non-Inferno levels, and this new revision blew it
away completely. Don't expect this new one to be just a rehash of the original.
Every single aspect of the original level was somehow recreated in
this one, from the divided player-start rooms to the green-marble
halls to the cement-area that followed and even the secret passages
(and of course, the crate scenes), but that only plays a small role
in the overall level: all of the modern level-design influences can
be found throughout this level also.
The thing I liked best was the feel it had. Somehow it managed to
perfectly reconstruct the exact same mysterious environment as the
first one (the original Containment Area music helped a bit too) and
take that mood to an all-new level that you'll notice right from the
start. It was like playing Doom for the first time all over again,
and all in one huge level, complete with 4 Cyberdemons; each right
when you least need them ;)
The other thing you'll notice is the increased difficulty level -
right away you will be fighting Cacodemons and a Mancubus, and it
just gets more intense from there. You'll be stuck without the
double-barrel shotgun until the very end of the level, and with a
whopping 668 baddies in this level on Skill 4+5 (522 on Skill 3 and
343 on Skill 1+2) you'll be occupied just killing things for at least
an hour... not to mention navigating your way around the huge areas
of this level. I can't think of another level I've played which
covered such a vast area (area that wasn't wasted on open
courtyards/oceans, etc.) There's not an extreme amount of
backtracking in this level which keeps the adventure fresh.
About the only downside was a shortage of ammo near the end of the
level on skills 4+5, as well as a very small amount of technical
stuff that most people are not going to care about anyways, so just
go ahead and download this baby now! (and start begging Sailor for a
tribute to Mt. Erebus next ;) )
