Paul Corfiatis has over 4 years of wad making experience now, and everything he puts out is of high quality. Death Tormention 1 & 2 were both incredible episodes for Ultimate Doom, but now Paul has begun a totally new series, this time for Doom 2. The Selfish series replaces the original levels starting at map 21.

Selfish 1 kicks off the series in excellent fashion. Beginning in an extremely large canyon you'll have mainly imps, cacodemons and the occasional revenant to deal with. Be careful not to fall off the edge or you'll have to make a run for any teleporters you can find.

Immediately the level feels quite detailed and very open, but keep in mind that no source port is required to prevent any visplane overflows. You'll have to work your way around to the top and then head back down into the rock to find the keys to finish the level.

Although the map is not increbibly huge in size, a well planned layout makes good use of what is there, as you occasionally go through previously explored areas in new ways. The usual doom type puzzles of lowering bars and raising bridges are used - it's always self evident as to what needs to be done.

I found the level to be far too difficult for myself on Ultra Violence, whereas Hurt Me Plenty was right between challenging and relaxing which is what I like. If you don't use your ammo carefully, chances are you will run out quickly. Whilst taking the screenshots I noticed a neat secret with... well, I'll just say it would have made the level so much easier.

As with all of Paul's levels texture use and lighting is flawless. He doesn't need excessive use of sectors to create decent lighting either.

Selfish 1 is another example of what can still be achieved with the regular doom2 engine. I just wish Paul wouldn't make UV as difficult as he has been recently. Definitely a level you shouldn't miss out on.
