Selfish 1 was definitely a kick arse level, but how would its sequel rate, they're always worse right?? Apparently not.

After playing through Selfish 2 once I was a little underwhelmed. It just seemed a bit too simple. So I had another go, this time searching for secrets and exploring the map a little more, and low and behold, it's really quite well done.

The layout is such that you go back and forth throughout the level, but you always come across new areas as you do, so you never get bored. The start is surprising with a Hitler pic and some SS troops making an appearance, but after that it's the traditional Doom style that we all know and love.

Paul has managed to successfully meld many different themes into the one level, such as a spacebase, stone underground, yellow brick room and the occasional pseudo-outdoor area. Texture use is perfect, and the lighting is typical Paul Cofiatis style - doesn't waste much time with pretend source lighting. I did spot one mis-aligned texture... the first ever in all of Paul's levels that I have played!!

Last time I complained that the difficulty of Selfish 1 was too hard, this time I am going to say it is too easy... hehe. If you somehow miss all the secrets the level would be quite challenging. But, take the time to figure them out (you can usually see what is on offer, so then it's a matter of pressing on all the walls around it...) and you'll cruise right through the level.

There are soulspheres, megaspheres, mega armours all round the place. You'll get access to all the weapons except the BFG - if you find them that is. It was nice to have the plasma fairly early on so that it could be put to good use. Chances are you won't run out of ammo either, with a box of shells usually appearing just when you're running low.

Selfish 2 is a level that grows on you. Be sure to play it at least a couple of times and explore a little, or you won't be able to appreciate all that went into the level. Let's hope Paul keeps being selfish... :-)
