Collector's Doom Out - Linguica - Monday Oct 01 16:15:36 2001

We've gotten word that people have started spotting Collector's Doom in software stores around the country. If you don't know, Collector's Doom is a compilation of The Ultimate Doom, Doom 2, and Final Doom all in one package, and retails for about $19.99. Here's a an Amazon page for it if you're too lazy to go down to the store. Sadly, there are no extras on the CD aside from the manuals in PDF format for each game -- a missed opportunity in my book, as Activision could have very easily included any or all of the GPLed source ports on the disk. Still, if you haven't been able to find one or more of the Doom games legit, this is your chance.

More than that. They have to provide the source somewhere for no more than distribution cost, ie, make it downloadable somewhere, most likely.

"gpl'd ports" posted Friday Oct 05 19:17:14 2001

i don't know if gpl'd ports could be bundled with the CD or not. Not to mention they would prefer to go through and QA test the ports etc.

Including the ports could produce a licensing problem. They can't charge for the ports.... which raises a question that I haven't bothered to answer - how does RedHat and others incorporate commercial products into their distributions ? Do the commercial products come on a seperate CD that cant be redistributed ? etc etc etc.

"Master levels should be included! :Pros and cons of collectors DOOM trilogy" posted Thursday Oct 04 23:12:52 2001

Maybe we should set up a petition to have master levels downloadable ?

The collector edition is great if you do not have your old copies of DOOM and also it makes a great gift to those who never played the originals !

In my opinion Collectors DOOM and Final Quake packages should have been combined together as a Quake-DOOM 2 trilogys for 30 bucks + a ton of wads and bsp's from Hackers!

It also sucks that the 20 maps of master levels doom are not on the cdrom either !

The reason why I bought the collectors DOOM trilogy is that I gave all my old copies to friends as presents!

"How to run collectors doom with winnt (box says it can't but it can!)" posted Thursday Oct 04 22:40:05 2001

Article by www.firewallfortress.com

Collectors DOOM ( DOOM trilogy ) was released this Fall 2001 for only 19.95!

How to play Collectors edition DOOM ( Ultimate DOOM, DOOMII, Final DOOM )
on windows NT 4.0 sp 4 or 5

The label on the new package of Collectors Edition DOOM ( DOOM trilogy )says that only windows 95/98/me/2000 can run the games. Well that is false my fellow DOOMERS, All 3 games can be run on Windows NT 4.0 !

Heres how:

1) Just copy and paste the folders Ultimate DOOM, DOOM2 and Final DOOM
onto your harddrive. (PS: If you get any error or message that says permissions not granted etc...

CLEAN YOUR CDROM-DVD-CDRW with wet
cdrom cleaner.

This is the best one I found ( No I do not own stock in the company! )
http://www.discwasher.com/ ( the liquid cleaner used is rubbling Alcohol )

2) You need a Joystick ( for some reason a mouse does not work with the DOOM trilogy on WINNT! )

Logitech wingman or Microsuck I mean Microsoft works )

3)

Drivers for Joysticks:

Click Start->Settings->Control Panel

->Double click the Multimedia-> Devices ( Log on WINNT AS ADMIN )-> Click Add

-> Select Unlisted-Updated Driver -> OK

->the Windows NT cdrom ( Non Upgrade disk )-> into the CD-ROM-DVD-CDRW drive

->drive letter of CDROM-DVD-CDRW ):DRVLIBMULTIMEDJOYSTICKX86 ( type this in )

-> and select in explorer harddrive menu-> ok-> 0x0201 hex -> if this is not your hex

you will know if you built your computer then this hex maybe correct ->

->Joy: A throttle or Z axis ->

->Ok-> restart computer

DOOM FOLDER-> DOOM2-> DOOM95.EXE -> config-> Set user name for config -> Ok->

get into same menu again!-> Joystick-> generic joystick-> config button->

select correct buttons for Joysticks Options etc... -> calibrate joystick 2X ->

Apply-> test buttons -> ok

Then select level and difficultly witn DOOM95

PS: You and play DOOM TRILOGY in 640x480 !
DOOM95-> advanced> screen -> and OK !

Almost all source ports can function with the Final DOOM IWADs -- MBF added full support with the help of Joel Murdoch, and thus both SMMU and the Eternity Engine have this total-support capability. Just add the appropriate iwad with -iwad, or put a copy of the source port in a directory with one of the IWADs and it'll detect it automagically.

This is definately a good place to start for the coming of Doom 3. Doom is not for wusses..that's for sure. You got to know your stuff when playing it or you'll end up restarting over and over and over and..well, you get the point.
Anyhoo...Now, all Activision needs to do is bring these out for the Gameboy Advance. Now, that'd be cool. Definetely!! Or a collection of fan mods for all us Doomers for the PC. What do all you guys think?

Doom or the collectors edition aren´t forbidden here in Germany, it´s just you can only sell them to 18 year olds and you are not allowed to advertise them anywhere where undr 18s might see them. Just thought I´d point that out but whatever. :P

In my day we played Doom without 3D-floors and WE LIKED IT!

Um...yes, actually, I am. I've never been able to track down a legal copy of Ultimate Doom or Final Doom in this country (couldn't get final doom at full price, never seen it on budget or indeed at all since then), though i've always wanted to buy them legitimately. So i'll be buying this box set as soon as I see it. Is there something wrong with wanting to pay id for their efforts? (Though how much of the profits from this go to id I wouldn't like to guess. Probably none. Oh well.)

My view on the ports:

If it did come with at least one source port, the general gaming populace would have real trouble comprehending the concept. Plus none of them were made by id, only overly-avid programming fans of the game. I would never have found out what a source port was unless I found DW.

Re-Releasing these games b4 the upcoming DooM3 is an awesome idea. Its a great way to build up a market, or simply a way for some gaming newcomers to catch up on whats to come. In addition, it puts all the major iwads on the shelf once again. I've only bought one DooM iwad(doom2).. and I own them all. Why? 'cause digging through the bargin bins at eb or babbages isn't exactly my idea of the perfect sunday afternoon.

Releasing source-ports or and additional pwads would have been a 'nightmare' for id to have to provide support for.. just think about all the posts in the dw forums concerning the different ports and for all the different platforms... id would truly be in hell then.

So take it for what it is. All the licensed doom games in one box for 20 bucks. Its not like there going to make a killing of this one, probably lose money in distrubution costs more than likly.

So, it doesn't even contain the Master Levels?
Kind of an incomplete collection, is it not?

I would have liked to see them wait for zDoom 1.23 to come out of beta, and throw in a few levels made by the masters at id Software, and perhaps a few from Brandon James, using the latest features available in zDoom...

Aw yah... *drool*

Does anyone know if this package includes Doom 95, the official SVGA Windows port of Doom? They should've at least included that, because I doubt too many people today are going to know how to configure sound cards and stuff in DOS.

It would've been nice to see ports like ZDOOM or JDOOM included, but then there'd probably be legal issues and the authors of the ports might want part of the profits or something.

Frig. How hard would it have been to include a bunch of gpl source ports? (They could prolly even have gotten away with ZDoom too.). How hard would it have been scrounge up a bunch of extras like user made wads, utils and stuff? How friggin hard would it have been to fill up the cd? There would still not be anything new really but at least anyone buying the damned thing would be up to date with the best the game had to offer :P

I wonder who the target consumer is? People who've been with DooM since the beginning or even over the past few years probably already own all the games in the set. Newer gamers are hardly likely to shell out bucks for an aging game. Collectors? Who the heck are collectors? That leaves exactly how many people that will buy the box?

Or maybe I should buy this Collector´s Doom in North Korea - a land maybe more free than Germany. Same for the GBA Doom - :::sigh:::

Wow. It comes with Adobe Acrobat Reader 5.0? Alright, I'm running out and buying that thing right now, why didn't you tell me sooner? In all seriousness, I like the gesture, but it would have been a LOT nicer if they had included at least SOMETHING new. On the plus side, you do get every Doom game ever made for only $20 if you don't have them already, which in my opinion is a wonderful bargain (considering that I got Doom II as a birthday present back when it was $45, lost the disks and replaced them with the CD from Wal-Mart for $10, broke that CD and replaced it for another $10, and finally lost that CD, for a grand total of $65 spent on Doom II alone). I might just get it, if for nothing else than the sheer joy of having the entire Doom collection in one box. Besides, that install screen does look pretty sweet.

I guess we should be happy they re-released it at all. to some people that will be a new game on the shelves. :)
