WolfenDoom: Artice Wolf

This just in from Laz, the WolfenDoom master:

Work continues on Operation: Arctic Wolf, which has become the most ambitious WolfenDOOM adventure yet. All the maps have been finished, and playtesting will begin just after New Year's. It should be ready for release around the middle of January. In the meantime, I have put up a series of new, full-screen screenshots which depict various views of one of the largest maps. The map is a huge u-boat facility with several pens holding submarines that was modelled after actual German u-boat bases used during World War II.

You know you love it. Go, look, drool.   -Covaro

Doom In Music

Ok, here is that thing I promised you. What is it? Well it's a nice little Realaudio broadcast that I did up, that has songs that are either covers of Doom music or have Doom samples in them. I did some DJ-esque parts that are somewhat hard to understand thanks to my cheap mic. Hope you enjoy getting to check out these songs.

New CTF Doom

That's right, for all you CTF lovers, a new version of CTF Doom has been released, brining it up to v.98. New features and fixes include:

Z-Checking implemented curtesy of Randy Heit [rheit@iastate.edu] author of ZDoom (Thanks): ZDoom Homepage - http://zdoom.notgod.com/
You can now jump over/stand on objects, players etc. Makes CTF more interesting.
Rewrote the Heads up display (this was a frame rate hog). The new one now does not display the mugs in the top right hand corner, rather it displays the players name above your teams score which has the flag.
- Something I missed mentioning in the previous version, when a player drops the flag a percentage bar will appear where the players name was in your flags colour. When this reaches zero the computer returns your flag. This is a visual notification of how long you have to go before you lose a chance for some return points.
Precalculated a mass of CTF code. The games should be considerably faster than before.
Modified network code slightly, maybe a bit quicker in a netgame now.
Power jumping may be disabled now, I wouldn't reccommend it though. This is set up by the Key player ie. Player 1.
If a 3 team map is started with only two teams the Gold flag is removed from the level.
Spawnthing function (Radius Trigger Scripting) now ignores invalid map objects.
Respawning has changed that if all team spots are occupied, one player is fragged so the waiting player can be respawned back into the level. This is to stop cheating.
You are not allowed to suicide for 3.5 seconds after respawning back into the level. Suiciding was introduced into 0.96 and it allows the player to blow themselves up and take out any player around them. This is not the same as firing a rocket into a wall or solid object.
Ability to play games with unlimited ammo, you still have to pick the weapons up but shooting isn't going to decrease your ammo. You'll know when this is on because your ammo total will be 666. This is set up by the Key player ie. Player 1.

Go download, play CTF, kill, destroy, be merry!   -Covaro

More Music

Doom Music fans, be prepared, for I have a nice update here for you. First from TcT:

there is one song i can think of which uses DOOM samples and namly the Player Screem and maybe DOOMs shotgun reload sound its from the german band "Rammstein" and the song is called "Wollt ihr das Bett in Flammen sehen".

Industrial Music of course, anyone notice a pattern so far? See earlier update. From Russel:

You know that sound that john Romeros head makes when it fires a deamon spawner skull block? Well that sound has been used ALL OVER THE PLACE.. one example would be near the end of Square Softs Paresite Eve when you see the cool fmv of the battle ships explode because of the ultimate being. Thats the first example I can think of but I have herd that sound used in a few movies.. I cant seem to remember the names... there is this Jap Anime show called Nightmare Campus that used the sound effect maybe even more than once with in the first 5 shows. Trust me if you listen for the sound it will start to pop up allot! Either in music movies or Games! Its funny but could this sound effect be the most popular of all sounds effects?

You know he could be right. That is the sample used in the one FLA song. And finally, from Rez:

You know about the several MODs that include DOOM samples? if you go to www.modarchive.com and search for "doom" they should come up.

Ah, well, I'll do it.. these are the ones that are in some way actually DOOM related, either for using DOOM samples or for being meant as DOOM oriented:

DEMONIC.MOD Demonic Sensation -- by Timelord
DOOMHELL.MOD doom-hell at home -- by Airon
DOOMMUS1.S3M Doom Soundtrack #1 -- by Bolleke
BLOODM.MOD Bloodmoon -- (possibly by Firelight)
DOOMSDAY.S3M Doomed -- by aRTy Boy
These are all good, but Bloodmoon is a special fave of mine. Wish I knew for sure who did it -- the internal Firelight credit may be for the samples, not the tune, tho the style is close to known Firelight tunes. Airon's tune is very funny. The rest are more traditional MOD music, if there is such a thing :)

Ok, not exactly what I was looking for but it will do. Make sure to get those mods! Keep sending in those sample reports!   -Covaro

Doom In Music

That's right, Doom in actual songs. Or at least samples. Check out this page for a list (however short and outdated it is) for a list of samples that Doom sounds have been used in. And for those that are curious, Doom samples were also used in a Frontline Assembly song, which is the same band that is working on the Quake 3 soundtrack. Thanks to Matt Dixon for the info. Bugg also reminded me that Doom has been used in a Smashing Pumpkins song as well. Anyone else know songs that include Doom samples? Send 'em my way.   -Covaro

New Way To Do Screenies

Check out the Flatland page. Their software allows you to travel through something like VRML, but alot faster. And as was said by Bruce Ladewig:

You might want to consider posting something about the Flatland Rover 3D markup language, which basically gives you the ability to explore 2.5D (like Doom) texture-mapped polygonal worlds through your browser. It's fullscreen, too. Would be cool as heck to see Doom *levels* instead of just screenshots!

Well, if someone can figure out how to do it, I would love to see Doom levels previewed in that fashion. Also, check out here for a good example of the Flatland software. I know I enjoyed using it.   -Covaro

    DosDoom Problem

Something went amiss with the released DosDoom v0.65 binaries (see update below). All versions are crashing during loading. We're not sure what exactly the problem was, but Dave blames it on a faulty compiler.

The following three are EXE patches for the DOSDoom packages below, players' version only. Here's a patch for the 486 version, a patch for the Pentium version, and a patch for the Pentium Pro version. Additionally, Dave has created repackaged (and -unofficial- as of yet) full players' versions which you can get here at Doomworld. Here's the full 486 version, the full Pentium version, and the full Pentium Pro version.   -Linguica

    DosDoom v0.65 Released

Whee! They had us wait for a long time, but the moment is finally upon us... the new version of DosDoom has been released:

It's a little light on the documentation, but if you are in doubt of something, try it and see what happens. I'm still writing docs (which is not fun) and will post when finished. I'll also post some DDF examples (and any you happen to send in... hint hint.) No word yet on the Linux version. There will also be a release party hosted by Dennis Savgir on #DOOM on EFnet.

There are six different binaries though, a "players" and "developers" version for DosDoom optimised for 486s, Pentiums and Pentium Pro's, resp. The difference is that the Developers version has lots of extra debugging and error checking information while for the Players version this has been removed for more speed. That did mean I had to download seven files now, you bastards :)

    Mirrored here on Doomworld are:

DosDoom v0.65 binaries, optimised for 486s, Players version (878 Kb) / Developer version (1259 Kb).
DosDoom v0.65 binaries, optimised for Pentiums, Players version (868 Kb) / Developer version (1255 Kb).
DosDoom v0.65 binaries, optimised for Pentium Pro's, Players version (865 Kb) / Developer version (1240 Kb).
DosDoom v0.65 source code (1161 Kb).

From the DosDoom site you can also get some "essential" files, such as a modified IPXSETUP that allows more then four players, a MP3 playlist generator, a software wavetable setup program and the Windows setup program for DosDoom.

Make sure you preserve subdirectories while unzipping! As said, more documentation and example stuff will follow later today but meanwhile you can read DosDoom's text file here. There is no news about a Linux version yet. Have fun playing and editing, and let the authors know what you have come up with!   -Mordeth

    Doom Legacy 3Dfx

The Doom Legacy team is working on a 3Dfx version, although up to now it only supports VOODOO-based chipset 3D cards. The frame rate is very smooth, but work needs to be done on Mlook, sky tiling, clipping, music/sound, and some higher resolutions. Go take a look at their detailed update, and the 18 3Dfx screenies taken from Gothic DM II, Twilight Warrior, Star Wars and Doom Forever!   -Mordeth

    Small glDoom Burp

Bruce Lewis made a small update over at the glDoom site concerning running glDoom in a full-screen DOS box on a Win32 machine. It won't. That's not a bug... glDoom is a Windows application and should not be run from any kind of DOS prompt. The M$ Office shortcut sometimes also causes problems... disable it before you run glDoom.   -Mordeth

    glDoom Maintenance Release 0.94D

Bruce Lewis has released a maintenance update of his glDoom port which addresses many issues:

I have attempted to address the most egregious problems. Including the mouse context switching, mouse sensitivity, no video mode list, no 16 bit color desktop available, menu lockup problems, lack of sound card detection, ability to run with no sound (for those who don't need it or don't want it), level switching problems in Ultimate Doom Ep 4, "exposing" the mvert key and its function and the key not working if keylink was turned on (keylink is now ignored - better one than none...).

PLEASE read the relnotes.txt file when/after you install glDoom and BEFORE you run it. (as well as the glDoom.doc file). The glDoom.doc file has been updated (again) so you might want to read that again. The changes are sprinkled throughout.

You can get this latest release from the glDoom site or at our Doomworld mirror (989 Kb). Of course, this is still a beta release with more changes coming.

Bruce will also be dropping WinDoom as a seperate port and the Doom 4 Windows port will take over this name. WinDoom and glDoom will be made into a single code base, which will probably turn out by taking the software renderer from WinDoom and blending it with the glDoom code. Plus:

I am also considering writing a new software renderer for glDoom that uses the new data structures created for glDoom. It would be slower than the original Doom software renderer but it would be able to deal with things like translucency, dynamic lighting and high color which don't graft well onto the original renderer. (...) The current software renderer also doesn't handle mlook gracefully nor does it lend itself to skyboxes or parallax shifting skies.

This will probably take several weeks to complete though.   -Mordeth

    Statement By Lee Killough

Lee Killough sent the following statement to Doomworld:

My recent departure from the Doom public should not be taken as a sign that MBF or its source code is "public domain" (apart from id's own license restrictions).

The only official MBF versions are ones released by myself, Ky Moffet or Len Pitre. They will release a more neatly packaged and better documented version of MBF soon (in the coming weeks). Demo wads showing more of MBF's features, such as falling debris, are also forthcoming.

Any other copies of MBF, repackaged by Doomworld or anyone else, are "unofficial". Right now only the original .zip file with the full sources and executable is "official".

Thanks for all the kind tributes, but MBF would not be as good as it is, without Rez, Len, and Quasar. They spent more time _combined_ testing MBF, than I spent coding it.

John Romero is also to be thanked, not only for his recent interview with Doomworld and his release of the Doom Bible, but also for his helping me make MBF emulate the Doom pre-beta, by providing exact details such as the number and strength of classic BFG fireballs.

Well, now that I know you are actually reading this Lee... if you disappear like that, without word and with killing off everything you have worked on so far, I was sure going to try to save as much of your work as possible because - even if you don't seem to think so - your stuff is certainly worth saving. This is not a rebuke... just stating what's on my mind.

Just yesterday I've uploaded the (ahem) "unofficial" MBF package to ftp.cdrom.com as well, but have now informed its maintainer Ty Halderman to take it down again until Rez or Len upload the (ahem) "official" archive. Meanwhile, you can still get the "unofficial" MBF package from Doomworld's source port section, Heretech or Prower's.   -Mordeth

    glDoom v0.94c Available

Ah well, Frag.com came back online for just a moment... which was long enough for me to finally get my grubby hands on the updated version of glDoom which has fixed support for the Matrox MGA-200 OpenGL ICD. Grab glDoom v0.94c (982 Kb) now from the Doomworld FTP server, or check out the glDoom site for a list of mirrors.

Update: Bruce is now working on a maintenance release (v0.94d) which hopefully fix a list of known problems. He also gives some advice if you are running into trouble running glDoom. However, most of the reported "bugs" or problems arise from not reading the docs carefully. Like:

He also points out that if you want to report a problem or a bug you should send him the gldoom.dbg file. Of course, you'd know that if you had read the .DOCs.

Korean is also added to the languages to which glDoom will be translated. WindowsCE users are urged to have a little more patience... it will be tested soon on this platform.   -Mordeth

Or Zdoom .. lookup & down, multiplayer, Jump.

Oh and a team would be nice!

    It will feature:
*Exact replaca of the cyber demon as you! (sometimes the game will control you *ALREADY DONE!!!!!*)
*All monsters replaced by tough little marine bastards (Including one that flys up and knock you and spray you with plasma!)
    *Cool maps :P

Martin Friberg sent in this letter to Doomworld.

I'm submitting some more doom news to you today. This time about an email I got from Iikka Ker,nen a week ago. I wrote and told him that I was collecting all wads from famous wad-authors, and he gave me a response with a list of his unkown wads.

With some help from Iikka, I've found just a few.

I'm now interested to hear from all people who might have played or even have any of these listed wads. I would like them to contact me. Here is a snippet from his email:

    - Sfalls .. a DM level, D2
    - "plasma" [or just "plas"?] .. a DM level, D2 (tiny, made in 15 minutes)
    - DM1 - 4 .. DM levels, D2 (probably never released to public)
    - School .. a DM level, D2 (my highschool, w/ new textures, music and sounds, probably impossible to find)
    - Home .. a DM level, D2 (same as above)
Those are the ones I can't find.

Unreleased levels... hrm. Gotta wonder.   -Covaro

    'Marine's Best Friend' Released

Lee Killough has released binaries and source of his source mod "Marine's Best Friend". Based on TeamTNT's Boom v2.01 engine it has been greatly enhanced with - among other things - high resolutions, lots of bugfixes and improvements, bouncing and "touchy" objects, friendly demons, dogs that help the player, improved monster AI, scrolling and animated skies, multiple skies per level, different explosion radii, mushroom explosions and the ability to include dehacked lumps inside WADs. Last but not least, it has emulations for the beta / pre-release versions of DOOM, including the old version of the BFG. A complete list of features can be read here.

You can grab binaries and source of MBF here at Doomworld (2,61 Mb). This includes documentation, editing info and tools and example wads. Or try the mirrors at Heretech or Prower's.

As many of us know by now, Lee Killough regrettably has left the Doom community, took down all his web pages and cancelled existing email accounts. An excerpt from his parting letter:

I will no longer be involved with Doom. I am not moving to another game, but rather, I am retreating to more "arcane" topics, such as higher math. I was doing higher math research way before I ever heard of Doom, and I need to go back and work on it some more, since I made some profound discoveries (they are of little consequence to laypeople, and won't make me famous, though -- nothing quite as big as Fermat's Last Theorem, or anything like that; these are much more arcane topics).

    And:

You may do what ever you wish with my MBF sources, but please try to preserve their "purity" -- that is, don't add "quick hacks" which lessen the value of the whole product, as some other projects tend to do. There's nothing I dislike more than for my work to be smeared by others. Total rejection or an admission that our goals are not the same, is better than lukewarm acceptance followed by "bastardization" of the product into a lower-quality-but-similar-looking one, by quick-n-dirty hacks.

Needless to say, Lee will be sorely missed by lots of Doomers including myself. Many of you have used or seen his work, such as the all-time best nodesbuilder BSP and his collection of older versions of Doom. He also contributed greatly to the first phase of TeamTNT's Boom engine before he left due to "differences". DOOM would surely look a lot different and would lack a lot of great stuff if it hadn't been for him.

Lee, I can't contact you, but on the off-chance you're reading this I thank you for all your work and dedication and wish you all the best. Goodbye, friend.   -Mordeth

12/10/98 -- Happy Fifth Birthday, Doom!
    glDoom Released

Finally, Bruce Lewis has released his glDoom port to the public! Unfortunately, all of frag.com seems to be down at the moment, including the glDoom site, so I've copied the following release text from 3dfiles.com:

I wanted to update the technology of Doom. It's a great game but in this day of 800x600 resolution games running on 3D accelerators it was beginning to look "dated". The goal is to bring Doom forward in time. Not to change the game itself.

glDoom will work on Doom 2, Final Doom - Evilution, Final Doom - The Plutonia Experiment, Ultimate Doom, Registered Doom 1 and Doom Shareware.

The absolute minimum system configuration to run glDoom is a 133Mhz Pentium with 16Mb of RAM and an 3D accelerator card with OpenGL drivers. The program will run on a system like this but is far too slow to be enjoyable.

The recommended system configuration to run glDoom is a 166Mhz or higher Pentium with 64Mg of RAM, a 3D accelerator card with native OpenGL drivers (not a Direct3D wrapper), a mouse and a sound card with wave table Midi support.

The optimum system configuration (to date) to run glDoom is a 450Mhz Pentium II with 128Mb of RAM, a Quantum 3D X-24 dual Voodoo 2 SLI board running 3Dfx's OpenGL drivers, a mouse and a SoundBlaster PCI64 with a general Midi sound font enabled.

Grab your copy of the self-extracting glDoom executable from the Doomworld FTP site (981 Kb) or from these other download sites at ftp.stomped.com, www.3dfiles.com, ftp.cdrom.com, Internet Arena or Doomshack. Enjoy :)

Update: A small glDoom (technical) FAQ can be found here, courtesy of "GoldSpider" and a 3dfx OpenGL FAQ here. You may also want to get version 2.1 beta of the OpenGL drivers at www.3dfx.com.   -Mordeth

    THRUST Release Postponed

The zips were ready, I was ready, but, of all days, frag.com was down. So, I would like to apologize to those whom I nearly promised that Thrust would make it before dec. 10. I'm really sorry, it was out of my hands. But, as soon as frag.com opens again or becomes avilable again, I will upload Thrust ASAP!!
