Everyone give a big round of applause to Twice Risen, our latest hosted site! Here's some features of this upcoming PC. Wow, sounds neato.   -Linguica

Boom Due Out Tomorrow

Tomorrow is the big day that Boom arrives on the scene. TeamTNT has updated their webpage with some info as to what will be transpiring tomorrow. Expect Boom sometime before 12 midnight.   -Covaro

Darkening Episode 2 Pics

You want pics? You got them! Jan Van der Veken has updated the Darkening Homepage with some very pretty pics of Episode 2. Anyone else want to play this one? I though you did!   -Covaro

Doom Zero Enemy News

Well, M.A. Entertainment has struck again! This time they have news of an enemy in Doom Zero, the Evil Space Marine. Here's an excerpt from their letter:

It is a spacemarine without a helmet on his head, and with a rocketlauncher... We also look for an idea for a 'final boss'...

Hmm... neat, they still need a website for the project though. Gee, I have no idea where they could get one from though, do you? 8-)   -Covaro

Doom Is 3D... No, I Mean It

Over at the WinDoom/glDoom homepage, Bruce Lewis has surpassed the 50,000 mark in about one month. Also, he's revealed a little secret:

Some of you have been asking what the hardware I was talking about supporting is. Well, Billy "Wicked" Wilson got it right when he said he thought it might be 3D glasses. I'm not going to name the manufacturer until we get it to work though.

Wow, I predicted that one by over two weeks.   -Linguica

From The Chief

Well now, the Chief from Chief's and Champ's Doom2 Page wrote us here at Doomworld, telling of the release of level 6 of the Chief series, and that they have opened a Wad submission section for their reviews. Fun page, very cool looking, especially those neat fire animated gifs, or possibly avi's. Gotta get me some of them...   -Covaro

Demos Clarification

Ok, well looks like this Strategy Demo thing needs to be clarified a little. Here is what is going on, we are making demos of individual levels and putting them together in a big zip file for the respective Mega-Wads. Lucky for me though, some of the people that have already written saying they can help me out with the task of writting the text files. Keep sending in those e-mails for helping out, if the mail keeps up at the rate it's going, we should be able to get down to 3 or 4 levels per person (overall).   -Covaro

Name Troubles

Looks like M.A. Entertainment has run into a snaffu with their name for their current project, Doom Destiny. The name seems to have already been taken by Bob Satori. Being good guys, they decided to change the name of the project to Doom Zero. Now that the name has been changed they can get back to work on the levels and hope that someone out their can help them get a "rocking" Map01 midi song. They want something that you can listen to for hours on end and not get tired of it. Midi artists who are interested should send e-mail to M.A. Entertainment for more information.   -Covaro

Ninja Doom Source Getting New Ideas

Rethcir of Ninja Doom has announced in the Source Coding section that he has received some recent advice from the guys over at the Doom Factory about how to make good weapons modifications within the exe. Can't wait to see what turns out.   -Covaro

3/29/98
Doom For The Playstation

Ray recently sent a letter to Doomworld asking if we knew where to get a copy of the Playstation version of Doom. The question is now being turned over to you, the Doomer, to see if anyone can help out Ray in his search for Playstation Doom.   -Covaro

Doom Development Page

Doomworld has received another letter informing us of another new Doom related site, this one entitled, the Doom Development Page. What is the Doom Development Page? Well ask it's creator:

I have nearly finished my website called the Doom Development Page. The Doom Development page is for the level creators and the source code programmers working doom, the aim is to keep up with the latest developments in the doom developers world. It will include the latest news, links and levels for all concerned, plus any new ideas that are being worked on and their progress. I know this is very similar to what you do at present, but is to do with the doom level creators, not just the players.

Also, Andy would also like to get some new levels built for the source ports that can show off their different enhancements.   -Covaro

Wanted: Doomers Who Can Shoot Hard And Staright

Doomworld is now looking for people who would be willing to help out in recording or translating demos of many different Mega-Wads for Doom and Doom2. All aspects of this are being run by me, Covaro, so all e-mails regarding this project should be directed to me. What we will be doing is creating demos of how to beat different Mega-wads on Ultra-violence, and then once the demos have been completed, is watching them and creating text file walkthroughs to go with them. Whichever part you would be willing to help out in, creating a text file or running the levels and making the demo, is greatly appreciated. The following Mega-wads have been planned, but this is not the only ones we are doing, suggestions are welcome.

So, if you are interested, please contact me for more information.   -Covaro

More Sites

Who here likes the new Doom source ports and projects? Ok, you can all put your hands down now. Well, Doomworld is proud to welcome to its ranks one of the first groups created to mess around with the Doom source code as if it were a large puddle of muck. Go check out Project Doom.   -Linguica

3/28/98
SEUS

Ok, I figure you think the headline sounds really weird. Well it isn't really. It stands for "Shoot-'Em-Up-Shelves". This site is being run by two brothers who want to see Doom and Duke3D kept alive. The site is realitively new, and has a few Doom add-ons already listed, but they are still looking for more, and would be happy if you could send some more their way.   -Covaro

Doom Resurrection

Another project has come to the attention of Doomworld. This one going by the title of Doom Resurrection. Little information is currently available about this project, but look for more from it soon. In the meantime, you can contact Haypups for more information.   -Covaro

Doom's Destiny

Doomworld recently received news about a new set of levels for Doom. This project entitled, Doom Destiny, is going to be produced by M.A. Entertainment. Here is the news that Doomworld received on the subject:

We of M.A. Entertainment are working on a sort of free DooM mission-pack... a few levels are finished yet... it will feature all new levels, new sound and new music... the 'beta-name' is DooM DestinY... and it will be for 'DooM legacy' only! because doom legacy features direct midi's without first convert them into MUS!!! which mean the MIDI quality and original instruments will be keeped... we will post some screenshots if you want...

Well, if you ever complained about Doom not having cool Mission Pack style add-ons like Quake, that problem now seems to have been solved. For more info contact M.A. Entertainment.   -Covaro

Primary Colors

Thrust has updated with a whole mess of new pictures showing off the recently hacked-in colored lighting. It now includes not only red lights, but green and blue as well! Next on his list: getting the colored lights on the floors, ceilings, and sprites...   -Linguica

TNB Site Open

Rick Clark sends along word that the The New Breed homepage has opened for business.   -Linguica

DF Site Open (Yes, I Am Unoriginal)

Remember the flamethrower that we talked about so extensively yesterday? Well, it now has a webpage. Check out DooM Factory for info on the flamethrower as well as other projects.   -Linguica

Doom Development Dearth

Wow... slow news day. That's both the problem and the godsend about Doom news: there's so much less than for other games like Quake II! Perfect when you're feeling lazy, but it sucks when you want to make massive updates. Anyways.   -Linguica

New HR Demo On The Way

RicrobNet has updated with the following juicy nugget o' gossip.

Yonatan Donner has informed me that he and his crew of Doom Gods are remaking lmps for the ever popular Hell Revealed wad. He promises faster times on all of the demos, and says they should be ready for release within a month. I can't wait. Now...if I can just get Yonatan to participate in my demo contests. Hmmm...

I smell a resurgence in demo popularity, now that Doom gods like Yonotan can piece together individual .lmps to form a big long super-run.   -Linguica

Clear The Trenches

Well, Andy Kempling picked the perfect day to email me a notice about the current production of a new flamethrower mod being worked on by the currently website-less Doom hacking group, DooM Factory. We'd offer them webspace, but I believe that they're already, ahem, locked up in that department.

Have you ever wanted to light a former human on fire? Or give the mancubas a taste of his own medicine? Ever wanted to gleefully slaughter the Cyberdemon while he stands paralysed from extreme damage??

Well, soon you'll be able to!

DooM Factory is working on a BRAND NEW WEAPON to add to the DooM Marine's arsenal: The FLAME THROWER!
A flame thrower is currently in the works, and it's looking SWEET.

The enemies will burst into flames when they die from the flamethrower, and will start to catch fire and leave trails of flames as they walk.

The patch includes

I can only say one thing: whee! If you want to help out, contact Jeremy Dunn.   -Linguica

3/26/98
glDoom Developments

Bruce Lewis has updated the WinDoom/glDoom page with information on a process he's developed to smoothen the edges on the sprites in Doom and get rid of the ugly black-crayon border visible in the earlier screenshots. This was one of the biggest caveats I had about glDoom, and now that it's gone, I might just be visiting the used 3D card store :)   -Linguica

3-D Picture

Since we posted the picture of the Anaglyph by DVS01, we've already had responses telling us it does work.

David Eckard:

In reqards to the 3d gif, It does indeed work.

Stephen Lum:

I happen to have a pair of those red/blue glasses and took a look at the picture. It wasn't too 3d-ish, but it did look like 3D, the Double Barrel looked quite cool with this effect.

Makes me wish I had a pair. Now, if only we could play Doom with 3-D glasses, now that would be freaky.   -Covaro

Ninja Sourcified

Kayin of Ninja Doom has updated the Ninja Doom Page with new screenshots of level 8. And also to announce that Ninja Doom will be using a modified source. The coder, Rethcir even has his own page to update on the progress of the source coding. The source code for Ninja Doom is based on DosDoom.   -Covaro

DosDoom Launcher Update

Ok, so you thought DosDoom wasn't enough? Well head over to the Graveyard and look what's been planned for version 2.0. Is there anything Grave missed?   -Covaro

Wildman Has His New Breed

It's official, Wildman has gotten all the people he needs for his New Breed project. He says that he is going to be putting up an official page for the project soon, but that's it. Come on Rick, more guessing games? 8-)   -Covaro

3/25/98
New Look

Covaro's Doom Page has been updated with a brand new look. Unfortunately all the links do not work yet due to the fact that all aspects of the page must be reformatted to fit the new look. I would really like your comments on the new look of my page.   -Covaro

Voting Daze

Voting on topics seems to be really big this week. Not only has Nick Baker started a poll on the "Best Doom Add-ons", but Doom News has begun a vote to see if Justin should keep the new format. With Nick's contest, last I saw Momento Mori 2 was in the lead for best add-on ever, and 89% of voters believed that the new format at Doom News was cool.   -Covaro

Star Wars Doom

The Star Wars Doom site has a new lay-out. Check out the screenshots, visit the message board and read the news. Looks promising!   -Mordeth

Source Mods

We've been notified that the Doom Legacy archive on our ftp site was corrupted. The problem has been taking care off, and we apologise for any inconvenience this might have caused! The binaries and source files of WinDoom v0.96a have also been uploaded to our ftp. Bruce Lewis explains:

The version 0.96a of WinDoom just fixed a bug in the cvar list. Key_left disappeared somehow. I put it back in and uploaded the bug fix as version 0.96a. Any release with a letter at the end is just a minor bug fix. (at least with WinDoom)

Doomworld has also been sent the source of MidDoom v0.03, which you can get at our source port page. Thanks to Nankervis!   -Mordeth

SOF Demo Winner Announced

RicrobNet has posted the winner of the Soldier of Fortune demo contest. Let's all give a big round of applause to Rudy Jurjako, who successfully traversed the level in 14 minutes, 45 seconds. The level is available here, and the demo is available here.   -Linguica

Game Guru 3.0 Released

Steve Noonan of The Doom Wad Author Page has released version 3.0 of his Game Guru utility, which works not only for Doom, but also for Heretic, Hexen, Duke Nukem 3D, Blood, and Shadow Warrior.   -Linguica

Ninja Stuff

Kayin has updated Ninja Doom with scads of info about the upcoming Doom PC. He talks about source ports, deathmatch levels, monster sprites, and why old and slow computers are so cool. Oh, and:

I'm even thinking about opening a seperate page for my coder to update on his adventures with the source, but Ill have to run that by the fellas at Doomworld.

Yes, running it by us is usually a good idea :P   -Linguica

DDL Needs Help

The Graveyard has updated with some information on the impending release of DosDoom Launcher 1.5. The author, however, is asking for help on a technical problem he's run into.

The only problem is that the BGI Device Driver info keeps showing up in the DDL-generated response file instead of the user-entered data after a -vspeed, -heapsize, -turbo, -deh, or -file command. I really have no idea what's causing this, so any ideas would be appreciated.

If you have any idea of how to fix this, you might be able to help speed up the next release of this great setup utility.   -Linguica

SOF Contest Closed

Eric James Roberts of RicrobNet has closed his Soldier of Fortune demo contest. Him and Lisa are churning through the demos and hope to announce a winner soon. But, demo fans, don't despair! You can now start working on your entries for Malcom Sailor's hard-as-hell WAD, Chord_NG!   -Linguica

Jim Dosé Abandones GLDoom

Jim Dosé has stopped working on his private GLDoom project. According to his .plan file:

I haven't said anything about GLDoom in a while, and that's because I'm knee-deep in working on Sin. Needless to say, I'm no longer working on it. It was pretty much a mistake for me to try to get involved in a side project that could never hold as much importance to me as Sin does. Besides, Bruce Lewis is doing a great job on his version of GLDoom :)
If you haven't heard about Bruce's version yet, go to http://www.frag.com/doom to read about it.

  -Mordeth

Ritual Doomers

Don MacAskill (another Ritual Entertainment guy) has updated this .plan file with the following:

Anyone out there working on DOOM projects of some sort or another? While I love the mlook stuff, the translucent sprites, etc etc... No one has stepped up and done my most wanted feature -- improved netplay.

I'd *kill* to be able to play DOOM across the net like I can play Quake/Quake2. Sure, I'd love to be able to join a game in progress and whatnot, but mostly, I just want to be able to play in a similar ping situation as Quake. And using TCP, of course. :)

So, um, if you're working on this, awesome, drop me a line. If you aren't, but are working on some sort of DOOM project, drop what you're doing and make DOOM w/TCP (client side prediction would rule), ok?

I'm sure he's not alone in this :) Anyway, Dr. Funfrock is working on a TCP/IP internet proggie for Doom, called DoomLink. Read all about it at his site.   -Mordeth

3/23/98
Voting Nightmare's

You've probably looked at the headline and said huh? Well Nick Baker over at Nightmare's Haunt has started a contest as to some of the "Best of Doom...". Topics include: levels for single or co-op, DM, music, and of course the ever present "Best Add-on". Not to simply be left with just that, Nick has also updated on two new projects he is beginning, one of which he has labeled TOP SECRET!   -Covaro

Doom News Has Moved

Doom News has moved to a new home on Doomshack. This after alluding to it for a few days beforehand, and Justin has even gone and reformated his page with a new look. Hope that he's happy in his new home.   -Covaro

Eternity Demo Released

A demo of the Eternity TC has been released:

The demo features the first level (derived from castlem.wad by John Mandago), a number of the new features like the flame thrower, sound fx, and graphics. It also has a demonstration level on E2M8 that shows off the first two new enemies, the Death Imp and Flame Spectre (the upcoming enemies are completely original). I personally think its worth the 400KB download =) Give it a try, and pleeeeaaase write me with your feelings/suggestions etc. And if the install routine gives you trouble, please tell me. I am contemplating rereleasing it with a better installation.

This according to producer Quasar.   -Mordeth

V... 1... 4... Ignition!

DosDoom Launch v1.4 has been released, with the following features:

You can download it from this site here. Oh, and Andrew... sorry for getting your name wrong yesterday =)   -Mordeth

Presumed Updated

At Bruce Lewis' WinDoom site it says that a version v0.96a has been released. But as to what is updated... no-one knows. My internet connection is very buggy tonight, so I'll wait uploading this new version when conditions are better.   -Mordeth

The Doom Shack

The Doom Shack has a new lay-out and purpose in life. It wants to be "best source of Doom news on the Net". I'd say, welcome to the club!   -Mordeth

Thrusting Into Color

Look out, Thrust has successfully acheived colored lighting! Albeit, one color, and only one color at a time, but colored lighting none the less. Sean has really outdone himself with this. Now, hopefully he can get more colors in and we can get a veritable rainbow put into Thrust.   -Covaro

True Type Doom

Sooner or later it would have had to have happened. Doom has become a true type font for Windows. The font was done by the guys at the German Doom League. These fonts are already sitting on my hard drive.   -Covaro

Fronts Up!

At the CTFDoom site I learned about a new front-end launcher for Heretic, Hexen, DosDoom and CTFDoom called DMStart.   -Mordeth

Wise Words...

Chi Hoang has posted a statement on his Official DosDoom site regarding recent events. An excerpt from this follows here, and in my opinion this wraps it all up:

The authors of Doom Legacy took it upon themselves to highlight a bunch of features of Doom Legacy and a bunch of problems with DosDoom. Well, if I wanted to, I could highlight a bunch of features of DosDoom and a bunch of problems with Doom Legacy. However, I won't bother because I don't want this to decay into a useless flame-war.

'Nuff said.   -Mordeth

To Serve and Launch

Update at The Graveyard, where we learn that David has cancelled support of his Launcher for the Doom Legacy source mod. He does however include support for the following mods: Boom, PDoom, MIDDoom, NTDoom, ATBDoom, Win32 Doom, XFree86/OS2 Doom and ZDoom. Plus, how does the phrase "Doom Deathmatch Bot" sound to you..? Same here :)   -Mordeth

FancyPants - The Doom Pool - Updated

I'm currently doing a sweep through the designer entries listed at FancyPants - The Doom Pool. Listed at the site are some invalid email addy's... if one of those belonged to you, better contact me again soon or your entry will be deleted. At request I have removed three other entries as well.

Several other entries have been updated. Nathaniel Roche informed that he has cancelled both his projects ('Dino Doom' and 'Depths'). However, I've added two new projects. One is from a new team called Doom Factory that wants to create new source mods to give us eg internet play. Doom Factory will be hosted by that illusive future site Doomnation. The guys at Voodoo Nipple Software are thinking of doing a sequal to their Hostage Rescue 3 project, called "Twilight Warrior": counter terrorism, special operations, hostage rescue, assasination missions, this project has it all. Last but not least, Dracula Doom still seeks fresh blood! If you're a level designer or sprite artist looking for a project to join, why not give them a call?   -Mordeth

Doom Legacy Replies

Yesterday's update about the Doom Legacy comments has started a pretty big stir in the community. Doomworld has received an email from the Legacy team showing their side of the story. This is the letter from the Legacy Team and is fairly lenghty. Also remember, these guys aren't native english speakers, so the english may be a little rough in spots.

As I've understood your article... it was not meant 'nasty' but you sure did like 'Sensation' newspaper... so you want your load of news eh :) ?

This is the kind of thing that we thought put on our news section... then we decided NOT, as we thought it was childish... some quotes about DosDoom were left this and there, and as you have removed them out of context you oblige us to respond and defend ourselves. So please put the following in your news as our 'RIGHT TO ANSWER' or something like this... we know its long but hey do your newsman job and cutout the most 'sensational parts' like you have done eh ?

We really have to put some excuses on our site now, but we cant update it so often so you'll receive this first as YOU SET THE FIRE ON US!!!!

We can tell you as today we have received at most 4 flames and the rest 30 mails just LOVE what we do. We have also received some mails of people SUPPORTING us, even if they do think it was a bit 'displaced'.

That word 'CRAP', hmm.. let me look in my English/French dictionnary... OOOPS! It's not in!

English is NOT our natural language and so I think I misused the word 'crap'. I bet you read that as 'shit', but we wouldn't ever said that 'DosDoom is shit' : we know Chi Hoang is putting a lot of work into his port, and we DO pay respect for that.

We are just tired to see DosDoom copying our ideas after each n every release of Legacy. DosDoom tries to ignore every other project (he doesnt say a word about us or BOOM) but at the same time, he COPIES the other project's ideas. Just to remind you what LEGACY brought first to the Doom community, this is childish but some 'faithful' DosDoom users needs their memory refreshed :

May I remind you that every option we add on the menus WORKS IN MULTIPLAYER, and in demos !!!

We DO have respect for the Doom community, and as such, we take the time to do the things right. Same for wad authors: before adding editing support for anything we take time to think it so that it won't need to be changed the next week.

DosDoom adds an option, next week he removes it, and so on... People might feel like we 'owe' something to DosDoom coz he was the first port... may I remind you that we started with the VERY FIRST DosDoom sources : keyboard was buggy, NO sound, NO network, NO music,... since that there's not a single line of DosDoom anymore in our code, as the stuff he was doing was such BIG HACKS!!

Some site said that DosDoom is there for much lomger that Legacy, and that he 'is chucking out versions faster'. Sure he does: arent you tired of one version fixing lots of bugs of the previous version and so on???? Version 0.61 was a big fix for version 0.60. Its always like this with DosDoom because he goes to fast, trying to do as good as us, thats what is getting us angry : if only he did his OWN ideas and don't oblige us to a perpetual competition.

We feel very pitty that you make us look like the bad guys. We do have written some time ago to Chi Hoang asking some questions, and we clearly said to him we thought his port was totally anti-user friendly. We were positive about it and even proposed some kind of coop. SAME story for John Cole (CTF Doom). Chi Hoang just wants to do its own stuff.

We are sending him some excuses as we certainly didnt mean that 'crap' about his work, we poor little Belgian fellas just thought 'crap' was a funny word eh?

We sure meant 'DOSDOOM IS A BIG MESS OF CODE' and it is our right to express our feelings on this. Wont you just take our quotes away everytime we say something on existing ports?

This guy IGNORES every other ports, he doesnt credit anything about them he just says 'by various authors'. WE DO have written somewhere 'thanks to DosDoom for getting us started'. You can see multiple times references to BOOM or WinDoom or other ports on our site...

At least we did express our feelings and it felt good. Well, we'll stop HERE, otherwise DosDoom will become a martyr and everybody will make it the 'cool guy'.

Thank you for listening, the 'BADASSES' at Legacy, who work hard to bring you the most entertaining Doom experience.

Cheers, 'team legacy'

There is the other side of the story. Now, maybe this thing can get cleared up and we won't have to worry about any other flare-ups.   -Covaro

Hank Leukart Interview

Do you remember Hank Leukart? The man who created the Doom FAQ, and the Doom Editors Handbook? Well, if you don't remember, sometime during the course of all this Hank just one day disappeared. This was the man who basically helped build the basis for places like Doomworld and was often considered the "God of Doom" outside id. Well, PlanetQuake has caught up with Hank and has even had an interview with him.   -Covaro

id Games Patch Page Resurected

The Best of Doom has taken over the id Games Patch Page and brought a new life to it. For those of you that don't know what the page is, it is simply one of the best places to go for overall DeHacked information.   -Covaro

glDoom Tests And a Birthday For Bruce

Everyone remember, today is Bruce's birthday, so send him a happy birthday message. Also, Bruce has just recently run a timedemo on the current version of glDoom and got it to run at 65fps on his Monster 3D card. This was also without lighting, sprites, or flats, so the actual time may be a bit slower. Still that is pretty good!   -Covaro

Wildman Takes A Stand

Well, after the recent news of the Doom Legacy comments on DosDoom things have recently gotten fairly heavy in the community. It seems that now, Wildman has dropped Doom Legacy from even being in contention for the spot of running his New Breed project. That now leaves DosDoom and Boom in contention for that spot. And Wildman is still looking for people to help out with his project, if you are interested, see his site for more information.   -Covaro

New News Site

That's right, a new Doom news site has appeared. This site is run by Gavin Doherty and can be found here. Well Gavin, welcome to the amazing world of Doom news.   -Covaro

Ricrob Revises Plans

In case you haven't heard about Ricrob's "Soldier of Fortune Challenge" he's gone and revised the plans for it and future demo contests. The deadline for the Soldier of Fortune demo has been extended, and he has also changed the rules for the weekly demo to, 100% kills on Ultra-violence. This was done because he had people sending him demos that were basically speed runs. This week's Wad Pick and demo challenge is for Kmetl 9 by Kurt Kesler. And remember, demos are to be sent to Ricrob.   -Covaro

Capture The Flag

Version 0.75 of the CTFDoom source mod has been released. Among its new features are:
  • Extended network setup packet.
  • There are now 3 lines available for scrollable messages, players now also have the additional information on who killed who, or whether they suicided. Because of this the HUD has changed slightly to accomodate the extra 2 lines of text. MUG Names have moved down slightly so they do not overwrite messages as they are displayed.
  • Swing Bar. This sits above the timer (in full screen mode) and gives you an indication as to who is leading and by how much.
  • Added to options to the OPTIONS/GAMEPLAY Menu which might make things interesting:
         - TELEPORTABLE MISSILES : OFF/ON/SILENT

         - TELEPORT DELAY (PLAYER) : NORMAL/QUICK/QUICKEST

              * These two options can be mixed with one another.

              * Don't abuse the TELEPORTABLE MISSILES option, eg two

teleports facing one another. Unless you want the game

to reduce to 5fps, after 2.5 million rockets/plasma/bfg

                blasts are moving between them!
  • Demo's are now storing all the OPTIONS/GAMEPLAY options. Note all the CTF parameters will still be needed on the demo command line, because of the way the CTFD.WAD file is loaded. It is still backwards compatible with previous demo versions.
  • Made lots of optimisations.
They also play with the idea of a three-way CTF Doom version. Due to the "pretty damn low" comments of a certain source mod project the CTFDoom source will not be released anywhere soon.   -Mordeth

It's A Funny Old World

Here's an excerpt from Quakegod's news update at our host site Telefragged:
In a world of chaos, here's the one thing that makes sense. DoomWorld now hosts Functional Entropy (making the ID4Doom TC). It makes sense because FuncE is run by the webmasters of DoomWorld. A crazy little world, ain't it?

You're being far too cynical, Quakegod, even for your age =P   -Mordeth

Thrust Moves In

Well, it's official, the Thrust Homepage has moved in here at Doomworld. Check it out now, this Doom Engine product looks pretty darn sweet!   -Covaro

Doom Legacy Vs. DOSDoom

Doom Legacy, freshly moved to frag.com, has also gotten a facelift, as well as scads of new pages and information about its incredible Doom port. However, it also seems to be decidedly unfriendly to a certain other port. Look at these quotes and decide for yourself.

While I hope not to get too involved in this, I'd just like to say that the Doom Legacy guys are showing extremely poor taste by so publicly bashing a fellow Doom port. We're all in this for the fun of it... right?   -Linguica

Uncovering The Graveyard

The latest hosted site to join Doomworld's ranks is The Graveyard, the home of the wonderful and easy-to-use DOSDoom Launch utility. Want to play ALIENS-TC or Eternal Doom using DOSDoom? This is the utility you want.   -Linguica

Doom News Is Moving

Doom News, is moving early this weekend from its home on AOL to an as of yet unannounced home. Justin says

I've got something important pertainting to this site to announce. Between Friday and Saturday, Doom News won't exist here anymore. Don't worry, something really awesome will happen very soon.

I have a feeling this means that the new Doom site that is being planned behind closed doors could be opening this weekend.   -Covaro

...Off To Frag.com We Go

The Leprechaun Doom team, creators of the well-known source port Doom Legacy, have moved to their new home at Frag.com. Aside from the usual stuff like the latest news on their project, you can find information here on how to use and customise Doom Legacy for your own WADs, their plans for future releases and how you can contribute to this port. Personally, I think they are doing an awesome job here... keep it up guys!   -Mordeth

Welcome The Ninja

We'd like to announce our newest hosted site here on Doomworld, Ninja Doom. This ambitious Doom 2 TC doesn't have any shirtless guys with Uzis like certain other "ninja" games have featured. However, it does offer great levels, all-new deadly weapons and enemies, and just maybe some source hacking thrown in for good measure. Visit it now!   -Linguica

News Of The Invasion

Paul F. has released his Invasion 2 add-on for Doom2. Invasion 2 is the sequel to Invasion and is very much a TC. Check it out today.   -Covaro

Hypostimus Talk

Over at The Best of Doom, Doom Wizard has posted an interview with Hypostimus. The interview has information about GothicDM2, and some of Hypostimus' other projects. A nice little peek inside the mind of the man behind the levels.   -Covaro

Doom Informant

What is the Doom Informant you ask? Good question, ask Ricrob as he seems to be the only one that has any clue what it means. I have a feeling though, that this could be the page that both him and Wildman are working on together. Goto RicrobNet to see the pic for Doom Informant and maybe see somemore info on this topic.   -Covaro

New Wildman Interview

Wildman has posted a new interview with Ron Allen, currently in charge of The Wad Designer's Handbook. You can read it here. It's witty and informative and... wow, I feel a sense of deja vu. -Linguica

Ricrob Leaves Doomworld

That's right, Ricrob has left Doomworld. Ricrobfelt it was best that he left us, simply because he was already to busy with his own personalprojects and life, that he would not be much of a help to Doomworld. Ricrob can stillbe found though, at his own home at, RicrobNet. -Covaro

He has now decided thta for every Wad pick heselects, a demo challenge is issued for that Wad on UV. No longer must you get the100% kills and secrets, you must now simply stay alive. Hostage Rescue 3

As promised, I have a little known TC for your pleasure! It's called Hostage Rescue 3.This TC isn't the newest of the breed but it has a very original premise. You area special forces operative, and you must take out the baddies, without harming the civilians. The Wad is pretty well done, with decent maps, and some very good weapons models. The enemy spritesare also done quite well. A crude form of jumping was also added to the TC, which replaces the plasmagun. It is relatively short, only three levels, but could be an excellent TC ifthe guys that created it would be willing ot expand on it. Download it now and than tell themthat you want to see Hostage Rescue 3 expanded! -Covaro

Site Plug

Martin Friberg sent along a notice of a certain level reviewing site to watch out for.

The purpose with this email is too make you guys aware of a new site on the Net which gets updated fairly frequently. Not a news site but just another "review-site" *sigh* Well I want it to get it into the so called "doom-community" and that is why I wrote you.

I'm not saying that you should write a whole lot about it, just keep your eyes open ;)

keep up the good work and good luck in the future!

Unfortunately, he forgot to include the name of this site to which he referred. However, being a budding Sherlock, I was able to the address to Doomster at the bottom of the .sig. Case closed.

Request For Deathmatch Demos

Also, Tommie Quick emailed me with a request for a favor: to mention that he "needs some help creating demos for his mini Deathmatch project." Well, sure Tommie! Here you go. Of course:

I don't have access to a net for a while so I can't do them myself.

All credit will be given to the DM recorders.

Tommie also forgot to include vital information such as names and addresses. I guess you could email him about it, but then, he said he's going to be away from the internet for a while. Unless he meant a network to play deathmatch on... quite the quandary. In any event, email him if you'd like to record some demos.

Email Problems

Duk here. I apologize to all those waiting for email replies from me about being hosted on Doomworld. I have received all email sent to me to date, the problem lies in sending the email. Please wait a little longer until the problem is cleared up. If you have something urgent to send me, use my ICQ Pager (#824600) if you do not use ICQ or send me an ICQ message if you do use ICQ and I will gladly reply back.

glDoom News

Sometime, late last night, Bruce Lewis updated his WinDoom/glDoom Homepage with a massive amount of info about his two ports. The most important highlight, was that he was reinstating PowerVR support for glDoom after finding a new set of drivers.

Ninja Doom Correction

Yesterday's update on the Ninja Doom Homepage, included some incorrect information. The sound files posted on the page were not actaully part of the TC itself, but simply posted by Kayin for fun.

Competetive Spirit

Well, we've all been hearing about the rumor of another major Doom site appearing soon, that is supposed to be a direct opponent to us here at DoomWorld. This super secret site has been kept under even tighter reigns than DoomWorld. Unfortunately, people seem to believe that this will lead to a direct contest between these two sites, leaving all the other sites out in the cold. That will not be the case, because DoomWorld is here for the progression and preservation of Doom, not it's undermining. We will not spite the new site, and I will personally have an update posted the day this new site opens up, and be there to wish them luck.

TC News

I have personally made a decision that I'm going to attempt to cover some little know TCs or PCs for Doom here on DoomWorld, simply because, we cannot be a truly comprehensive site without covering all aspects of Doom news, no matter how small. The information on these little-known TCs will appear at least twice a month, as I can only inform people of the existance of the TCs as I discover them. The first will be one will be tomorrow.

They have also recently aquired someone to do the Deathmatch maps, but are now attempting to decided whether to release a modified exe or stick with the current DeHackEd patch. The Ninja Doom Site will soon be moving here to Doomworld to join us in our preservation of Doom.

Incorrect Update

An incorrect update was posted today at Prower's Page of Doom, stating:

Doomworld, OTOH, hasn't updated yet today. Wow! Out of a staff of 6-7 people, not one of them can get on the internet and update? :-)

Doomworld was in fact updated well before this update was ever posted. As we have stated before we will bring you daily updates in a timely manner. This is not meant as anything other than a clearing of facts, and has nothing against Prower or anyone else.

New New Breed

Wildman has decided to begin recruiting level designers for his New Breed add-on project. Experience is not an issue, as Wildman is asking for all comers that can give input to the project. Full information can be obtained through Wildman's Homepage.

Boom Delayed

TeamTNT has updated with info that their Boom engine has been pushed back another two weeks or so.

Don't panic--you'll get something in your hands on April 1st. But we've got such a good beta crew working with us at the moment, and the flow of information and feedback is so productive that we just don't want to jump straight into a public open beta release. So, we've changed the plan a bit.

There won't be a public beta as such, but on April 1st we will make a prerelease version available to the general public. Then on April 15th, after a couple of weeks of feedback we'll release the final Phase I product. The prerelease approach is sort of like a public beta without all the paperwork, and our time is better spent on the product rather than the beta registration process.

For the uninformed, Boom is TeamTNT's foray into the world of source ports. It basically has no limits of any kind on level size or complexity, as well as lots of new linedef tags, and other neat stuff like true deep water.

Forum Number Two

Another Doom forum has appeared, this time from Ricrob, Wildman and Ron Allen. The new forum, Quake and Doom Forum, is meant to be one free of spam, foul language, and attacks on people. Should be a very good forum, from three guys that know their id software games.

Soldier's Of Fortune

Do you remember Lisa Moore's Soldier of Fortune? Because, both her and Ricrob are asking for a demo of her level Soldier of Fortune on Ultra-Violence with 100% kills and secrets. The person that can acheive this feat will be feature on RicrobNet. If you don't already have Soldier of Fortune you can download it here.

Ricrob-Wildman Merger Info

In the near future, look for two major Doom sites to disappear and become something new, and different. Both, RicrobNet and Wildman's Corner will soon join together to become one site. So far, even Ricrob is not totally sure as to the exact plans for this merger as Wildman is being secretive about what is to come.

Ricrob Adds Music To His Site

RicrobNet the home of Ricrob has recently been improved upon with the addition of music to the main page and his Wad Picks page. The Wad Pick midi file is to be included if the featured Wad has new music to demonstrate what the player can expect to hear while playing the level. In addition to adding the new music, Ricrob has also decided to now update the Wad pick every friday. Ricrob also plans to regularly change the midi on his main page, in an attempt to not allow the midi to get stale.

Amiga Ports Abound

^_^ has sent along word of a webpage devoted to Amiga ports of Doom.

Just thought you would want to know about all the various Amiga ports of Doom that are currently out (including some that support the new PPC boards).

In my opinion, the port called "ADoom" is the best because it can play back the MUS-ic using software wavetable synthesis and it supports practically any resolution, up to 1600x1200! (I run it on my Amiga at 320x240 31.5 kHz).

The page gives info on seven different Amiga Doom ports. The Doomworld source ports page will be updated with all of them once I can get Ethernet boy Mordeth on the case.

WinDoom 0.96 Released

Bruce Lewis has released WinDoom 0.96. It's been uploaded and is available on the source ports page. New features:
  • Fixed bug that kept left alt key from working.
  • Fixed "exit crash" bug.
  • Various memory leaks plugged.
  • Changed bind command to allow for key scancode entry. This was done solely to allow for foreign keyboard (or Dvorak) owners to customize their controls. You still can't change the weapons keys nor can you change the console or menu keys.
So I guess that Bruce's new hardware was a Dvorak keyboard? Damn, I was expecting something cool, like VR headgear or something.

WinDoom Special Feature Delayed

In a recent e-mail from Bruce Lewis, he stated:

The feature I wanted to add (am adding) hasn't shown up here yet. (hardware, you know...) Until I get it, I can't be sure that support for it will work and thus haven't integrated the changes for it yet. I'm not saying yet what it is until I get it. If it turns out as good as the PR, then it should be pretty hot. That's all I can say for now. But it's not in there yet. Still "coming soon".

This new feature, whatever it is, must be pretty interesting if Bruce doesn't want to give it away. Also, remember, WinDoom v. 0.96 is to be released later today!

Bye Bye, American

We're sorry to hear that American McGee has been fired/let go/downsized/booted from id Software. John Carmack stated in his .plan that the cause was that they (the other id employees) weren't "seeing what they wanted." As far as I know, it's much too early to start making sounds and levels for Trinity, but maybe I'm missing something.

McGee created E4M1 and E4M4 for The Ultimate Doom, as well as Maps 02, 03, 04, 05, 06, 07, 14, and 22 for Doom 2. We wish him well in his next career: online gambling.
