Legacy Hacking

In one of the cooler editing twists to come along in a while, Steven McGranahan has sent along word of some creative Doom source hacking.

I got the Legacy sources from Fab a while ago and I have been messing around with them ever since. In the process of messing around, I have added a lot of cool new features like pseudo 3d effects. You know in BOOM how you can have rooms over rooms? Well, that's possible now too, but with this, you can have tunnels in the floor you can fall through to a lower level, elevators that open at the same end on boath floors! I have made a small demo to show these new effects.

That page, by the way, is here. I've tested it out and I must say it's pretty damn seamless except for the inevitable sound cutoffs when you instant-teleport.   -Linguica

Plugging Away

Sam Ketner, author of the Warcade series, kinda bribed me into saying a few words about his latest Boom level called Moonbase Cresta. According to him it's a kind of Episode One recreation situated into a disused UAC base, which requires some thought when playing in order to survive. Go take a looksee.

We also received word from the Mercenary TC moderator, who could use a few members for his newly started project. BTW, you need to have javascript enabled if you plan on navigating his site.   -Mordeth

3D Design Made Easy?

Saw this tidbit mentioned by Portax amidst his usual ravings at our host Telefragged... GA Source has an article on a company called think3 for "their endeavors to make it easy and entertaining for 2-D designers to learn complex 3D skills with a Doom-like video game."

Until now, 3-D design software has been too expensive, inflexible and difficult to use, typically requiring several months of training and hands-on experience for designers to become productive. With The Monkey Wrench Conspiracy game-based learning software, designers see results in hours, becoming productive in a matter of days.

This 3D video game is included with every copy of think3's new Windows-based software called "thinkdesign". But then again, we still prefer Doom over any of those 3D upstart games, eh? eh? :)   -Mordeth

A Warning

Ten million dollars or the kitten gets it! No, really, routine maintenance on the server means that Doomworld mail will be down from about 6-7 PM Central Standard Time tomorrow, March 3. Those of you with Doomworld mail accounts won't be able to send mail for that hour, and I'm not sure if mail sent to a DW account will be bounced or not. Just a friendly little warning...

Also for those of you wondering where the results of the recent contest are, all the essays are trapped on my computer currently in for repairs, so we'll all have to wait on the good people at PC Warehouse to speed up the process :)   -Linguica
