March 1999 News
   31st March 1999

Sitewatch - Linguica

  • The Darkening has a rare update saying that Jan Van der Deken has pulled out due to lack on interest, leaving the quite capable Ola Bjorling in charge. Apparently episode 2 is nearly complete with only minor tweaking required. Ola goes on to describe episode 2, mentioning the maps' larger sizes than in episode 1, and that the texture WAD alone is nearing 7 megabytes. Ouch. He also puts out a call for people able to test in a 4-way environment.
  • The Chaos Crew has an update to say that their WAD Caverns of Darkness in still going full tilt. There's also some new screenies of level 6.
  • Doom4Win -- which has now changed its name to WinDoom -- has a small 'I'm alive" update to say that progress is still under way.
  • Fanatic has some news on the progress of Doom Anomaly, talking about the Peacemaker (a new pistol in the TC) and the flamethrower.

dmDoom Action - Linguica

The dmDoom Homepage has an update which answers a lot of questions people have been asking about OpenGL, TCP vbs. UDP, and other stuff. Also:
I am not going to hold the release of this up for graphics, sound, or any other aesthetic improvement. When I get the networking and supporting code rock solid and running well on win32 and linux, I am going to release it. It may not be the most advanced DOOM engine on the planet at that point, but that is fine.
Sounds like we might get our hands on some internet Dooming action sooner than expected! I can only hope that he's at least planning to plug in some sort of sound to the raw Doom source code...

Other Sitewatch - Linguica

  • After being posted and complained about, the Generations 0.94 beta has been pulled. Apparently the beta was a rush job with little playtesting and it caused some serious problems on gamers' computers. The Generations crew says we'll just have to wait until 1.0 to get our hands on some Quake2-vs-Quake-vs-Wolfie- vs-Doom action!

Alpo Con III Stuff - Linguica

Adelusion has his own version of the LAN party goings-on between himself and Hypostimus over the past weekend. Hypo, of course, has a rebuttal :)

Recession Released - Linguica

Recidivus has some good news:
Tonight I celebrate the release of The Recession, a totally revamped compilation of the three original Recession levels. This huge map features the general floor plans of its predecessors, along with new architecture, better texture use, and a brand-new thing regime. There's also new music to top it off, and a BONUS map included for those who have faith enough to download this totally revamped and much-improved work.
Well? Go get it!

Doom Nation Stuff - Linguica

  • Doom, Damnit! has made its triumphant return from the dead with lots of crazy and wacky news about Doom and otherwise. Unfortunately it's lacking the old version's hilarious John Carmack interview, among other things... check it out for some laughs, in any event :)

Internet Doom Play: Soon A Reality? - Linguica

I received quite an intriguing message just a few minutes ago from Steve Larsen:
I am working on a port of the DOOM source that targets deathmatch and will be playable via the internet. Some of the things I've done/am working on include:
  • True client/server functionality.
  • Join/leave dynamically.
  • Client-side prediction.
  • OpenGL support (with possible D3D/Glide on win32).
  • Dynamic/colored lighting with alpha blending, of course.
  • DirectSound3D/A3D on win32.
Basically, what I'm shooting for is DOOM with Quake style networking and graphics, but no modifications to game play (mlook, etc). I am tentatively calling it dmDoom.
Sounds cool? I thought so too. And this guy isn't just blowing smoke either! Head over to the dmDoom homepage to read gigantic status reports about everything he's accomplished so far. Maybe we will see Internet-playable Doom within our lifetimes :)

Massive Mordeth News - Linguica

The Mordeth TC Site has been updated with a big ol' honking hunk of an update which talks about all sorts of things -- the Mordeth source port, "Doomishness" versus progress, monster AI, level news, and new sprites and monsters. Be sure to check out the new episode 3 screenshots while you're there, too.

glHeretic v0.06 Released - Mordeth

Michaël Ryssen has released a new alpha version of glHeretic with the following improvements:
  • Bugs corrections (memory allocations problems, light levels on walls).
  • Lots of optimizations (rendering process have been rewritten).
  • Textures animations fully implemented.
  • Fullscreen mode (use -fullscreen switch).
As usual you can pick up your copy mirrored here at Doomworld (237 Kb), or read the text file first.

Sitewatch - Mordeth

  • Rick Clark updated Wildman's Corner with an improved 'thing count' tutorial, courtesy of ZDoom's very own Randy Heit. He is also planning on creating several more ZDoom levels and has posted a screenshot of this work-in-progress.

Doom Nation Stuff - Linguica

  • Doom Millenium reports that two more levels have been completed, as well as some other info about stuff like the Doom Millenium engine.

   29th March 1999

Hypostimupdate - Linguica

Hypostimus has a big ol' update over on his Doom page mainly regarding some LAN action between himself and Adelusion. He also has some news on the status of his Mordeth E3 level, and some compliments for Wildman.

The Haunting - Mordeth

Nick Baker updated his Nightmare's Haunt with some praising words about recently released levels and news on his Paradox TC. Expect some new screenies soon!

Sitewatch - Mordeth

  • The release of the PC version of Batman Doom has been pushed back by a week, this due to unexpected problems with the Dehacked patch. This means that PC users can expect this lovely TC by the beginning of next week. More info at the Batman Doom site, so give them a looksie.
  • Doom Underground's Colin Phipps has several new reviews for your viewing pleasures: Mike Watson's "Eulogy 7" (yes, him again :), "FStation", Richard Clark's Boom level "TCRASH", and Sam Ketner's "Warcade 4".
  • Ricrob has posted a review of Richard Wiles' Ultimate Doom level "Spooky 3" and Mike Watson's ZDoom level "Zort 1".

Ganging Up In Zort - Mordeth

At Cyberdemon's Place you can find three demos of him, Ricrob and Linguica playing in cooperative mode on his ZDoom level "Zort 1". Mike has also started work on the sequal, unimaginatively called "Zort 2".

   28th March 1999

Securitron? - Linguica

I've stumbled across a page with a whole bunch of screenshots of an upcoming ZDoom partial conversion called Securitron. Looks pretty good, too...

Dagger Stuff - Linguica

Dagger has a rare update which talks about all kinds of stuff, including word that he may be teaming up with Pixel Rex for a project, and some SlaughterDM news.

Afterglow Redesigns - Linguica

Afterglow has redesigned his homepage and has released a deathmatch WAD by the name of Sacrifice 01. He also has some thoughts on the various Doom bots.

Alpha Version glHeretic Released! - Mordeth

Whee! Michaël Ryssen has decided to release an alpha version of glHeretic on an unsuspecting world. You cannot have 'normal' gameplay yet since this is a very early version, but it's a start. Make sure you read the text file first before downloading the glHeretic binaries (235 Kb) mirrored at Doomworld now. This is of course for Win32... For fast rendering you'll need a 3D accelerated card (OpenGL compatible) and it runs fine on a P200 with a voodoo1 3dfx card.

Werthmann's Linux Heretic - Mordeth

Werthmann has released v1.0 beta of his Linux Heretic port. From the log:
  • Music support via the lxdoom-musserver and a updated soundclient - now music works with standart OPL3, Midi-wavetable and AWE32-Midi (sounds great)
  • Several network fixes (IPX and UDP) - now it would be displayed if a player quits a game.
  • Heretic now works an a Netwinder (ARM) and on a SCO-Unix machine (happy Sysadmins :-))
  • Some new graphic-feautures like linear and bilinear filtering within all graphic targets (X11/GGI/VGA)
  • FastX11 - a new graphic-target has been written, but it works only on x86 machines yet -> it doubles the fps-speed against the x11 target even in truecolor-mode!
Lots of different-flavoured binaries can be found on his site, but you can find just the source (437 Kb) mirrored at Doomworld.

Sitewatch - Mordeth

  • Wildman's Corner has updated with a promise of a new thing count tutorial for ZDoom later tonight as well as some problems with script errors in WadAuthor. Big news however is the release of his Quake E1M7 to ZDoom conversion. This map can be downloaded here when it gets cleared from the 'incoming' directory at Walnut Creek. You know you want it!
  • Little blurp on the Desktop Doom site with a change of email address for Thomas Sturm.
  • Ricrob's been busy... this time a plug for Cyberdemon's new "Zort 1" ZDoom level and some other nice tidbits of SP-gaming info.

New XDoom Available - Mordeth

Udo Munk has released a new version of his Unix Doom port XDoom (681 Kb) as well as an updated multi-platform collection of wad tools (774 Kb). New in this release of XDoom are:
  • OS mouse support under SCO OpenServer5 if running the full screen DGA version.
  • Joystick support for Linux x86.
  • Compiles under FreeBSD 3.x.
The collection of WAD tools is updated with:
  • A Strife palette included, so all tools dealing with graphics resources do support Strife now too.
  • The tool wadpatch had a bug and used the color palette uninitialized, if used without the color palette option. This is fixed.
  • The tool wadtex crashed on large textures. It now handles textures up to 1024x256 now and clips larger textures with a warning instead of crashing.
  • The tool wadflat didn't allow extraction of flats from PWADS, because PWADS cannot include a F_START label. Tool is improved to accept FF_START label now too, which is used by convention by various tools.
Both releases are source-only and have been mirrored at Doomworld.

   27th March 1999

Ach - Linguica

Sorry for the uber-late update, but some technical glitches prevented updates earlier in the day. Whew!

Lotsa Chaos - Linguica

Ever wonder what goes into the making of a Doom megawad? Realm of Chaos talks about the making of its megawad, with detailed info on the entire process, a history of Doom on the Mac, and some current perspective. They've also added some demos, reviews of the 2 Artica PWADs, and a cool new logo. Coming soon: an in-depth review of the Mac-only Doom level editor Hellmaker.

Paul Steed And The Model Of Doom - Linguica

Over at Loonygames there's a modeling tutorial by Paul Steed which shows how he went about making and animating the Doomguy model in the upcoming Quake 3: Arena. Interesting stuff!

Sitewatch - Linguica

  • Ricrob has updated his webpage with news that he's uploaded all the known DWANGO WADs to Doomworld's FTP server since no one seems to know where all of them really are. Good thinking!
  • Fanatic is starting work on a "bouncing betty"-type weapon which will hop up in the air and explode, showering the area with bits of razor-sharp debris. He also has a question regarding self- referencing sectors.

Doomnation Stuff - Linguica

  • Doom Anomaly has the news that in Anomaly DM you will be able to choose between snow, fire, or water in the levels, and has posted a few preliminary screenies of the different skill levels.
  • Doomed99 has redesigned its page, and has posted reviews of Cyberdemon's Artica and Artica 2.

   26th March 1999

Pullen Along - Linguica

Please welcome our latest hosted site: Fanatic's Asylum! Run by the infamous Marc Pullen who has created musical works of art for many of the great Doom WADs, Fanatic's Asylum now covers Pullen's numerous forays into the world of Doom hacking. He's quickly becoming a DOSDoom DDF specialist, and some of his stuff is said to be quite incredible. Currently he has a long diatribe about implementing ejected shells into Doom... quite cool stuff! I wonder if he used the sprites found in the IWAD of early Doom versions...

Sitewatch - Linguica

  • Wildman has posted a whole buttload of new ACS scripts sent in by loyal reader Dec0nstructor. The sample WAD included shows off some cool effect such as death-dealing laser grids and gun turrets which can fire rockets or bullets or anything else. Great stuff!
  • Captain Mellow has released version 1.22b of his Valykrie mod so certain WAD authors wouldn't whine while he goes on vacation.

   25th March 1999

Say What? - Linguica

Isn't that always the way? I've received word of a cool new Doom page (yes, that's its title, "Doom Page"), which includes a rather complete Doom Bible (not to be confused with The Doom Bible). Unfortunately, it appears to be written in Czech, or another wholly unintelligible foreign language... if you can decipher it, more power to you :)

Sitewatch - Linguica

  • The Chaos Crew has posted even more screenshots of their upcoming WAD, Caverns of Darkness.
  • Wolfendoom has posted a B.J. Blaczkowitz (or however it's spelled) skin for Doom Legacy. Now you can frag your opponents in your pajamas and then jump up and go "YEAH!"
  • Batman Doom has posted a new "characters" page showing a mug shot and in-game picture of all the enemies you'll face in their Doom 2 total conversion. The PC version is due out *very* soon...

Pretty Fly For A Doomguy - Mordeth

Telefragged got us three more mirrors, one located in San Jose and two in Australia. They are in the process of mirroring now so some of the files may not all be there yet. Next time you download a file from the Doomworld FTP server you are also presented with a choice of six mirrors. Neat, huh?

WinHeretic v0.82 Released - Mordeth

Michaël Ryssen has released v0.82 of his Win32 Heretic port. Yes, this is the same guy who is developing the OpenGL Heretic Map Viewer in preparation for glHeretic. New in this release are improvements in looking up/down under high resolutions and fixed keyboard setup problems. There is still a problem with midi volume control on some systems and the use of SHIFT / ALT keys. You can grab binaries, source, and the Universal Safe version from Doomworld's source port section.

   24th March 1999

Sitewatch - Mordeth

  • Captain Mellow has a few words of admiration for Marc Pullen's latest DDF trick featuring breaking glass, as well as some screenies from the upcoming version of his Valkyrie mod. He also cautions against using Valkyrie and the Deathbot with DosDoom v0.65. Apparantly the current version of the Deathbot is the latest DosDoom v0.651 and the proper engine for running Valkyrie.

GLHMView - Mordeth

A second version of the OpenGL Heretic Map viewer has been released by Michaël Ryssen. I would have missed this one if it weren't for the good folks at Raven-Games :) This second version has:
  • Sky mapped on a sphere.
  • More optimized code.
  • Light Levels management.
You can get your copy of this "preliminary before GLHeretic" mirrored here (34 Kb) at Doomworld, but be sure to read the text file first.

WHeretic - Mordeth

Robin McLeod has released a new version of wHeretic which has better mouse sensitivity settings. The debug messages have also been removed, but the demo desynching still occurs. You can grab your copy of this Win32 Heretic port at the Raven Games ftp site but -not- yet mirrored here at Doomworld... their ftp server has been crapping out for the past three days so I couldn't get my grubby hands on a copy.

   23rd March 1999

Sitewatch - Linguica

  • Ricrob has a large update on his homepage focussing mainly on a co-op demo of Kurt Kesler's ZDOOM1 which apparently turned out humorously. He's also added some new content to his... content pages, and is considering taking over the Master Levels FAQ which will soon be out of commission.
  • Desktop Doom has redesigned its site and posted some screenshots of the upcoming version of the Super Legacy Launcher.
  • Captain Mellow has some news of a cool new feature in the upcoming version of the Cajun Bot which allows the player to "freeze time" and run around looking bots stuck in place and projectiles frozen in midair. Cool!

Doom -> Quake 2 - Linguica

Opulent has posted on his page a review of Homage, a Quake 2 level pak which includes "outstandingly detailed recreations" of E1M2, E1M3, E1M4, E1M8, E1M9, and E4M3.

Doom Nation Stuff - Linguica

  • Team Insanity has a review up of Joe Becht's Recession: Necropolis.
  • Team Eternity has posted their Eternity TC page. Currently, the main page and story page are available for perusal.

   22nd March 1999

AVI Madness - Linguica

Dukworld, despite being off the air, has posted two AVIs from Stefan Maes (hi Stefan!) which were intended for the ill-fated ID4DOOM TC long, long ago. One is deemed "classic" and the other deemed "normal," but its normality can be questioned (where'd that Bad Ash come from all of a sudden? :)). You should go download these, and see some of Stefan's Doom work in Army of Darkness Doom while you're at it.

No More Destruction - Linguica

Nark sends word that the Destruction DM project has been canceled.

Due to unforeseen circumstances the project has been cancelled to a lack of interest, apologies to the fans who actually wanted this tc to become a reality.

However, Nark has released the sprites that were to be used in the TC, which can be found (603 kb) here.

Voodoo Doodoo - Linguica

Voodoo has redesigned his site yet again, and has some news about the ZDoom level he's working on (doesn't everyone have a ZDoom level in the pipeline?).

New DMStart - Linguica

Version 2.3 of DMStart has been released. According to the author, "DMSTART is the DEFINITIVE FRONTEND with Network support for DOOM, DOOM II, Heretic and Hexen. Also supports CTF-DOOM and DOSDOOM (0.61 or better)."

Kester 54, Where Are You? - Linguica

The Official DOSDoom Homepage reports that DOSDoom leader Kester Maddock has been MIA for a month since leaving for university. Until he returns, all DOSDoom news will be relayed through our very own Captain Mellow's DOSDoom page.

Doom Nation Stuff - Linguica

  • Mike Tawney has redesigned his homepage, and has updated with some notes on a new Doom 2 deathmatch level he's been working on -- a conversion of Q2DM1 (what game hasn't this level been ported to yet?).
  • Doom Anomaly has posted some screenshots of their new knife weapon and the new fogging effect they've implemented.

   21st March 1999

Sitewatch - Linguica

  • Ricrob has updated his homepage with some words on Quake 2... and also a new featured pick of kzdoom1, a NEW KURT KESLER WAD! NEW KESLER WAD! Ahem... anyways, you'll probably want to get this.
  • The Chaos Crew has reached the 1000-hit milestone! There is also an announcement that new screenshots are on the way, and that work on the lower bandwidth version of the site is in progress and should be finished within a week.
  • Captain Mellow has released version 1.22 of his Valykrie mod, which includes new scenery items, including ambient sounds, as well as new graphics.
  • Wildman has posted a tutorial on how to create a rotating door in ZDoom.

Doom Nation Stuff - Linguica

  • Fanatic has updated his asylum with word of some cool new coding of his for Doom Anomaly.

I was then messing around with something inspired by Gokuma's DDF weapon patch, how he had the hell rain spawn at the celing. So I tried using that idea as a base for mine. I used the spawner code to create a drip spawner that hung from the celing, and would spawn either one or three drips, and instead of having the graphical sprite simulate it falling, it actually falls to the floor. So no matter how tall the celing is in that sector, the drips will spawn from the celing, and fall to the floor. It's amazing how cool this turned out. Once it hits the floor, it "explodes" into the drip splat.

    Sounds cool to me!

   20th March 1999

TeamTNT Loves ZDoom - Linguica

TeamTNT has declared ZDoom to be Boom's worthy successor! With its Boom compatibility as well as gobs of new features, TeamTNT says it's just what they had in mind for the next stage of source ports. As such, it'll be the port of choice for Ultimate Invasion and the just-started Doom2000 (no, not the long-promised id Software game).

New WHeretic Version - Mordeth

Robin McLeod's site for his Win32 port for Heretic has found a new home at this location. Plus, a new version has been released that supports A3D 1.0 for 3D positional sound. Keep in mind that this port is still under heavy construction though! You can find it, as usual, mirrored at our source port section.

Sitewatch - Linguica

  • Wildman has posted a whole assortment of scripts to his new script library, thanks to Twice Risen-er Michael Niggel.
  • Speaking of which... Twice Risen has updated with some news about a broken counter, great new textures, ZDoom hubs and ACS, and lots more.
  • Zombie Doom doesn't have any new, ultra-gory screenshots today... just a site redesign and a bit of news.
  • Forget that whole "finished" thing... the Cajun Bot is still cooking, and has added a new team member named Terry Mahaffey. Can't wait to see what comes next...

DTE at DDE - Linguica

The Doom Development Environment homepage has released the source to Doomwiz's DTE (Doom Texture Extractor) so you can see "how bad I coded back when I coded this little monstrosity!" Sounds good to me.

Doom Nation Stuff - Linguica

  • Doom Anomaly's Anomaly DM is coming along quite nicely, with a public release due soon. Plus, they hint that Marc Pullen "has something up his sleeve that has never been done in Doom before." Hmmm...
  • Doom Millennium has posted four new screenshots of two different levels in their upcoming WAD.
  • Team Insanity has hit number 20,000! Also, they're looking for a good CGI updating system.

   19th March 1999

New Gazette At Doomoscope - Linguica

Yes, the long-thought-dead Doom WAD review site The Doomoscope has updated with a slew of new reviews of WADs by your favorite ex-Doomer and mine, Sverre Kvernmo (and if you haven't already, you can read his 5 Years of Doom interview here).

ZDoom Bug Fix - Mordeth

Randy Heit updated the ZDoom site that the latest version 1.17b released yesterday has a bug that causes monsters resurrected by an Archvile to become invincible and non-blocking. Oops :) A fixed version has been released, which you can also find mirrored at our source port section. At least, I -think- that is the updated version.

Operation: Rheingold - Mordeth

At the Wolfendoom site you can find the preview of Operation: Rheingold ready for download. This preview for PC or Mac consists of the first three levels situated in Nazi-occupied Paris. Anyone who has played their previous project "Operation: Arctic Wolf" knows he is in for a treat!

Sitewatch - Mordeth

  • The Doom Underground has several new reviews, this time for two biggies: John Bye's "Cygnus20" and Adam Foster's "Fracture". Also reviewed are "6FIFFY2", "REC002" and Rick Clark's "TSEWER".

   18th March 1999

Wild Thing - Linguica

Please welcome our latest hosted site: Wildman's Corner! Run by the infamous Rick Clark, a.k.a. "Wildman," Wildman's Corner exhibits his many WADs but also has many tutorials explaining how to use the new features present in the source port ZDoom. Check it out!

Sitewatch - Covaro

  • New layout at the Ninja Doom page, as well as more screenies, and a progress report. Find out how much longer you have until you are going to kick some ninja ass.
  • The Doom Underground has been updated with more reviews. This time it has 2 reviews of new Doom Episodes, as well as a handle-full of the regular one-level wads.

ZDoom v1.17b Released - Mordeth

Randy Heit has released a new (maintenance) version of the Win32 source port ZDoom:
The most significant change (from a user's point of view), is that it now starts up faster because it doesn't spend all its time loading the sizes of each sprite. It also includes some bug fixes to version 1.17a, and there are a few internal changes designed to make supporting Heretic and Hexen easier in a future release, but you would need to look at the source code to notice them.
As usual binaries and source have been mirrored at our source port section.

Doom Nation Stuff - Covaro

  • Doom Millennium has been updated with some more shots of the levels, as well as showing off a few new effects from the engine.
  • Sir Robin has done more reviews, most notably a 5 star one for the Wildpack, as well as noting of some big things coming from him in the near future.
  • Doom Anomaly has posted four new screenshots of the skill/episode selection level, as well as posting some general news about the status of the project.

   17th March 1999

Batman Doom Rectification - Mordeth

The guys behind Batman Doom received some emails saying that the available Mac version of Batman Doom released yesterday was corrupt, so they've re-uploaded it at the same URL. Let them know if this fixes the problem!

Sitewatch - Mordeth

  • Bonzai! Although Ninja Doom didn't make the expected release date, they are drawing closer to it. Plus, a hint at something "awesome" later tonight...
  • Captain Mellow has released v1.21 of his Valkyrie DM mod, with some changes to the Gokuma staff.

OpenGL Heretic Map Viewer - Mordeth

Michaël Ryssen has released his OpenGL Heretic Map viewer, available at his site or mirrored here at Doomworld (binaries (35 Kb) / text file). This is -not- glHeretic although it lets you view Heretic levels in OpenGL, but the first stepping-stone towards it. Read the text file for system requirements and installation procedure!

He has also released v0.81 of the Universal Save version of his WinHeretic source port with a 'minor' change: it has implemented a first version of the ActiveX control for changing the settings. Remember, Universal Safe version only... this does not apply to vanilla WinHeretic. You can get binaries and source as usual from our source port section.

Go Even Wilder - Mordeth

At Wildman's Corner you can find some more ZDoom tutorials, this time dealing with defining action sounds, new animated textures and flats and usage of fog. Rick Clark will be slowing down now and concentrate on some level editing work, but he still plans on doing a scripting tutorial (o yes! the bane of yours truly...). If you can add to his growing library of tutorials just give him call.

   16th March 1999

Sitewatch - Covaro

  • The Chaos Crew has released the first part of the storyline to their project Caverns Of Darkness. You can also look forward to a low-res version of their site to pop up in the near future.

Batman Doom HERE! - Linguica

After months and months of waiting, Batman Doom has finally been released! Unfortunately, this version is Macintosh-only (think of it as payback for all the new source ports Mac-ers have been missing out on) but the Batman Doom team promises that the PC conversion should be ready by the end of the month, barring unforseen problems. You can download this 32-level conversion (6.1 megs) here.

Batman Doom Release Set - Covaro

When you ask? Tonight! Tonight! Ok, so it'll only be the Mac version, but the PC version should follow soon. Look for Batman Doom right here on the main page sometime tonight!

Demos - Covaro

News on the Gotcha! front from COMPET-N. Seems the contest is going very well, with Rudy Jurjako having jumped out with a big lead after a long time of silence. Who will step up and take him on? Who knows... damn... it's like a soap opera for Doom. 8-)

Dukworld Closed - Covaro

Dukworld has been shutdown. 'Tis a sad day today indeed. Don't stay a stranger Duk. There isn't much more to say other than without Dukrous, Doom wouldn't be the game it was today. I have a wierd feeling that even though his page is gone he is still going to find a way to keep us in line.

   14th March 1999

Mercenary News - Linguica

Over at the Mercenary TC Homepage has reached 1000 hits and given away a free CD from CDNOW.com. The enemies page has also been updated, with screenshots forthcoming...

Tutorials Galore - Mordeth

In his third update these past two days Rick Clark has posted yet another ZDoom tutorial on his site, this time dealing on how the change the gravity settings in a part of your level. Way to go :)

For All You Whiners - Linguica

We've gotten some complaints that the new Doomworld design is a tad slower than the old one, and for some people that might be true. Solution? Get a faster connection or move to America! Seriously, though, we're always looking for ways to make your Doomworlding more enjoyable and so we've created a faster-loading news page especially for you. It's not pretty: there's no sidebar, and you'll miss out on the stuff in the above box, but if you're looking for that quick fix, it might be just what you were looking for. (Remember to load the regular news page once you're done to make sure you haven't missed anything, though.)

Sitewatch - Mordeth

  • Captain Mellow updated his site with some words about his failing Minotaur spawner feature in the latest Valkyrie DM mod, which is now also available. Apparantly the Minotaur is not quick in attacking your opponents and still crashes the game after a while.
  • Update: Captain Mellow has released v1.20 of the Valkyrie mod, which replaces all Doom weapons and is much stabler than its predecessors (no Minotaur spawner, unfortunately).
  • The Chaos Crew has an update about a potential source hack for their upcoming level pack Caverns Of Darkness which would allow Barons and Hell Knights to bleed green and Cacodemons to bleed blue.

Nightmare's Haunt - Mordeth

Nick Baker updated his Nightmare's Haunt with word that there might be no updates in the near future due to college stuff, as well as mentioning the review by Doom Underground of his "Classic4" level. More goodies to come :)

Doomnation Stuff - Linguica

  • Gokuma has posted a sample WAD showing the ability to make true rooms over rooms in ZDoom without the use of silent teleports.

Go Wild - Mordeth

Rick Clark has updated Wildman's Corner with yet another ZDoom tutorial, this time dealing with monster specials. These are actions or scripts that will be executed after one particular monster gets killed. You know you want it.

Update: Some corrections have been made to the monster special tutorial, plus a new one has been put up dealing with phased lighting.

More Doomster News - Linguica

The recently resurrected WAD review site Doomster has posted a review of Seventh 07 in a new section called "In Focus" (no relation to the Telefragged feature of the same name).

LxDoom v1.3.6 - Mordeth

Colin Phipps has released another maintenance release of his Boom Linux port LxDoom, bringing it to v1.3.6. He has added automap rotation and scaling, hires to the SVGALib version and updated the musserver. Binaries and source have been mirrored on our source port section as usual; the musserver can be retrieved from the LxDoom site.

Speaking of which... Doomworld has now an automatic redirection system which allows you to choose from which mirror you want to download a file from. Currently you have the choice between Telefragged, Pennsylvania and South Africa, as well as the normal Doomworld ftp site.

Sitewatch - Mordeth

  • The Mac version of Batman Doom is finished except for two final MIDIs, and the PC version will follow probably before the end of this month. Good news, eh?

OMG! This Is So Cool! - Mordeth

Yes, today is Doomworld's one-year anniversary and to celebrate we have asked Mystican to come up with a brand-new design. You are now looking at it :) As you might have noticed already the other sections of Doomworld still need to be converted to the new format as well, which we will be doing nice and easy over the next couple of days.

Thanks go out to Mystican for coming up with this design, as well as to our readers for sticking with us this past year *sniff!*

Doom Legacy v1.28 Soon..? - Mordeth

There's a big whopping update over at the Doom Legacy site (with the wrong date in the header, but nonetheless...) regarding some of their Windows port aspects. Playback of MIDI music, TCP/IP, fast loading... it seems to be all there. They are also looking for Win32 beta testers, so go here if interested. Last but not least, they have a plug for StroggOnMeth's Game Stop where you can find a hacked version of Legacy that introduces some new editing features such as a sector-above-sector trick.

Q3:A Doomguy Follow-up - Mordeth

At sCary's a comment from Carmack has been posted regarding reflective bits on models - this after a question on what seems to be a reflective helmet on our exclusive screenshot of the "Quake3: Arena" Doomguy model:
Yes, it is reflective (of an environment map, not the actual surroundings, though). You can create per-pixel reflectivity effects with out shader defination files. You can't make it out in the screenshot, but the environment map image is actually an old DOOM screenshot.
Old Doom screenshot? Maybe if I stare long enough... :)

On a related note, at Loonygames you can read Paul Steed's tutorial on how to create your own Marine model.

Thanks go out to SailorScout who brought us these two items under our attention!
