Overview
The Extinction is a single-player only, story-based partial conversion which uses Zdoom as its engine. Since the concept of levels isn't the traditional here, we can't say how many levels this project will have. The game's world is one big whole, which is divided into three chapters. Each chapter is playable on its own, but together they form the whole storyline of The Extinction, much like a movie trilogy.
In each chapter the player is free to move around, back and forth, as he pleases while discovering more and more of the story. The main idea to make it a trilogy was, however, to release a little part of the project at a time so people don't need to wait for years to play it.
Having just completed your marine training, you feel very confident and enthusiast about an emergency call your unit receives late in the evening. Altough you've arrived a few weeks ago you still haven't got used to the humid heat of New Mexico. But that's a small problem considering you've just got your first assignment. Along with 11 other marines you prepare your equipment and do a last minute check to your headgear as you rush in your vehicle. It seems to be a police screw-up. They were protecting some witness in a safehouse and got ambushed. Adrenaline starts to rush as you hear the combat zone through a police officer's comlink. The vehicle is getting close to the house, so your team makes the last tactic plans before rushing into action. Once stopped, you leap out and start the operation. ”This ain’t no combat simulator!” your commander yells behind, as he kicks the back door in and gets engulfed by the shadows inside. Your team follows. Once everyone is inside, you start inspecting and invading the rooms one by one. For a while everything goes as planned… then the silence is broken by gunfire. Screams of pain. More shooting. The next shot comes from the room on your left. Your friend Cobbs yells as he evidently falls on the floor. Your heart beating like never before and your head turned into his direction you forget one basic rule: keep your front guarded. Too late you turn to realize there’s someone rushing into the room from a doorway. Wielding a machine gun he empties its magazine into your chest. Strangely, you don’t feel any pain. But as you stumble on the floor, pumping blood you realize you can’t feel your body either.
One simple second, and you’re on the floor, amazed at the outcome of the events. Not the mission, but your current state. The attacker passes you, leaping onto the next door. You hear more shooting as everything starts to fade out…

Violently, you shake out of your unconsciousness. Where are you? Is this the afterlife? I just died, right? Slowly with the consciousness comes the reality. You are inside a some sort of pod; walls of glass and filled with water. Your body is perforated by some high-tech looking tubes, in both hands and your mouth. You can make little out of your surroundings since the glass is thick and your eyes hurt. Suddenly, the pod starts emitting low, rumbling noises. Like some sort of pump that pumps the water. Soon you realize that your pod’s emptying from the water. The tubes and plugs release you. Once empty of water, the walls of glass open, letting you fall on the cold floor. You are freezing and in a really bad shape… if this is the afterlife, then its creator must have a really wicked sense of humor…
