EDIT, 01. August, 2011: Katamori abandoned the map, the remaining stuff will be the work of Processingcontrol. Thank you, man!


Beyond some mapping and playing experience, I try to make my own map into this fantastic community project :)

The name of the map is Callisto Anomaly, and I would like to make something that's similar to the legendary map of the original Doom, E1M8 alias Phobos Anomaly.

IMO Phobos Anomaly was a bit abstract and weird, however the title, the music, the custom architecture and the epic end gave a brilliant feeling to this map.

My recreation will be a hardly infested base rather than an abstract structure. I like logic and realism. :) (btw, music is the MAP20 of TNT: Evilution)

I don't think that a big problem. It's a custom WAD with some levels, but mine is only one level and it won't be custom, but a part of a bigger megaWAD :)

Neat, has a moody feeling too it. I like the sort-of underground theme you chose.

I do have a few nit-picks though. I noticed you were using the DOORTRAK texture as a rim for the ceiling lights. This texture usually looks pretty out of place for almost anything but...door tracks. In its place I think COMPSPN8 from cc4-tex.wad would look much nicer.

In general, if you are going to use a texture that has some sort of crease on it, it usually looks more clean to align the creases in a way that make it appear as a clear transition (otherwise it looks more like wallpaper).

Also, while I do like the realistic and semi-claustrophobic height the ceiling and floor are at in that room, I am hoping that the entire map doesn't stay generally flat-planed like that room. Height variation is important, even in a "realistic" map.

Thank you, I'm happy to read that! :)

Previously I worked only with the original Doom2 textures and I used DOORTRAK often, so it was only a reflex. :)

New screenshots coming soon! Here you'll see the other parts of the map. There'll be a dark abandoned techbase, outside areas and later a full of techbase with hellish elements. And of course, a boss fight in the middle of a pentagram! :)

EDIT: my mapping method is custom. Firstly I put the main architecture elements and then the things. It means I don't use decorate things often (like corpses, blood, lamps, etc.)

What do you think? Is it a big problem?

No, plenty of people map like that. As long as the end result is a good level, it shouldn't matter. Just make sure that when it comes time to fill the level with things, that you do it sensibly, not in a random fashion.

I like that the new shots show some more height variation, too, keep it up.

When I was a beginner mapper, I used to put things in random, but now, I don't. Except the outside areas, where stalagmites and both trees are looks good x)

BTW, is the forcefield picture good? because as I saw, there's a bit hard to see through this red thing

Wow, those new shots look really nice!

I really like the warehouse shot; the architecture is really interesting with all the height variation.

Don't worry about the force-field, it looks fine.

I didn't like the second new one as much as the others. The transition between the cave and base seems sort of abrupt.

Nice shots, although the lift in shot 2 (I am assuming it is a lift?) could probably use a less repetitive flat for the ceiling. Screen 8 doesn't show particularly much :P.

The industrial/techbase stuff is still looking pretty good. I don't have much of a say about the screen2 lift ceiling, except that it doesn't look bad to me - I'm just wondering if there's any way to make it look better (for others' sakes).

I am kinda weirded out by the last two screens (the red ones) - they seem unrelated, as if from a different map or by a different mapper.

The new shots still look really good, but the second one looks kinda bare, and large patches of ceiling using a light texture is more of a thing that you expect in level from 1994. I also think the last two screen shots are out of place and undetailed compared to the rest of the level.

Other than that, I hope this level is finished on time; I can't wait to play it!

Have you played Traverse Dunne's maps for Darkening yet? If you ask me the best examples of height variation done right are there. But here's one of his newer maps, Nostalgia Station, also has a very good sense of height variation IMO. http://www.doomworld.com/vb/wads-mo...talgia-station/

It's actually very easy get to height variation in map, and when it's done right, it can make the layout and gameplay in a map so much more interesting.

Also in that outdoor section, maybe even place a guard tower or two with a few chaingunners looking out of and a lift that can lead the player up? Just an idea. :)

I already built the outdoor section, but I didn't start yet, when the picture was made. :)

Well, my progress is not bad, but there are some problems about my mapping possibilities: I'm too busy, I don't have idea, some parts of the map aren't as good as I want, etc. However I hope my map won't be bad for you. :)

By the way, I built the giant pentagram where the player will do the final fight on the map. It's a bit low, but very big :)

This picture only a very early concept picture, but you are able to see my texture palette around this place.
