I wasn't really planning on mapping for CC4 since I didn't think I could map well enough yet for a project of this level, but the inspiration bunny bit me so I couldn't help myself. Especially not after I got a look at all the nifty textures in the CC4 texture pack. I just had to map. The result will be this level. Inspiration came solely from looking at artwork from Deathwing from WoW. No idea how big this map is going to be, probably average to considerably big. It's going to be a "rusted metal + lava" themed map, with some grey marble thrown in as well. It's hell, so I can be creative. =)

The atmosphere and texture combos are something I've rarely seen before - the stained glass windows and rusted metal add a unique feel to it. Very creative!

I worked on the map again the entire afternoon today and managed to create and finish another hall of Deepholm. Here's some screens:

If I'm posting too much screenies, please do tell. I'm a bit unsure about this new part, though, which is why. I'm not really good at big halls or rooms, I'm always afraid they're not detailed enough for 2011 standards. So I made enough screenies so you can get a good look at it from every angle.

Nice texture gallery, although I'm afraid your areas are very flat from what I can see. I mean, the ground always seems to be at the same level, aside from a screen or two.
I hope you'll include open areas, like for example what you can find in Plutonia maps 16/17, with height variation and interesting, interconnected parts.

In addition to what Wilou mentioned about the apparent flatness of the level terrain, I'm not really sure that your usage of stained glass window textures makes any sense.

The floors and heights shouldn't be anything you have to worry about just yet. I only made three real rooms in the map so far. There will be terrain level fluctuation, rest assured. I've just begun.

Not sure what you mean by stained glass windows. I don't remember using any. Unless you mean the snakes and dragons, but those are mosaics.

Why you would cover a window with a mosaic instead of stained glass is beyond me, but ok

I believe he's referring to Quake, the game that the textures come from, in which they are pretty definitely windows...

Murals don't glow :-P

It's hell, anything's possible. =p Besides, they can very well be stained glass windows placed before light sources in the wall, that's not uncommon. And structurally in my map, it's not impossible either, the walls are thick enough to have lights behind them even if I didn't build em there or intend it to be so, but if you want them to be windows that badly, there you go. =p

I don't see anything wrong with the mosaic textures - I think they look awesome and provide a unique atmosphere. They could even be windows with fire/lights behind them (other than the sun) or a glowing or reflective material.

I hardly noticed the general flatness, though now that people have mentioned it, that is something to consider (even though it doesn't seem that bad as is). As long as it doesn't adversely change the atmosphere...

Thanks for more positive feedback. =) I know I've been quiet for a while, but it's because I'm struggling a bit with the current room I'm working on. It's finally starting to shape up like how I want it to, but I'd like opinions. I'm not very good at big rooms, so I'd like to know how it looks so far:

This room is circular, with the blue key "shrine" in the center of the pool surrounded by magma and 4 Cyberdemons (there'll be a secret to get rid of them easily). What I'm worried about is how it looks, both design and detail wise. It's not finished yet, so I know it needs more detail and stuff, but I'd still would like to know opinions on how it looks so far, and suggestions for detailing or improvements would be welcome, too.

This is the Blue Key shrine, which I consider finished, aside from monsters that still have to be added. I personally like the coloured stairs, but I'd like to know opinions on this room, too.

Looks as though it has good texture usage but a distinct lack of height variation in these shots, Still looking forward to playing it I thought your pccp maps were pretty cool.

A quick update: I have finished the inner design of the magma pool (I think) surrounding the blue key, which just leaves the walkway around it left to be done, and then I can move on to other areas. Screenshots:

Nice, I'm liking the look of the screenshots. They look rustic and hellish. The main room kind of reminds me of NDCP2's Map28 Rusted Turmoil, which is a pretty good thing. :-)

Finally got around to working on this again today. It was a pain to map, since my Doom Builder, both 1 and 2, kept getting run-time errors and deleting all my progress. I had to continuously use a backup to recover my lost map and rebuild what I build five minutes ago all over again. Nevertheless, good progress was made, and the entire yellow key area is finished. This leaves about three main rooms left to be made, and then the map is done. Some new screens:

I am pleased to announce that as of today I have completely finished "Deepholm". The final fight is deliciously tough, though I guess people who are not a fan of Hell Revealed-style won't like it. Those people can rest assured, however: not all of the map is a slaughterfest, in fact there are only two salughterfights in the whole map.

I have sent the map to the testers now, and I'm waiting for their thoughts before I submit it. Personally, however, I am pleased with the result.

I'm glad it's done. It was a bitch to make, even if the result was worth it. =)
