What are those pulsating tentacles you see in certain places? Do they end up doing anything? I was thinking that if they don't, it'd be cool to have a mod in which they do something to doomguy, or perhaps spawn monsters.

I think they're just the Doom 3 equivalent of Doom 1 and 2 gore textures. They're decoration. And I agree that they should do something to Doomguy in mods, such as pop out of the ground randomly, in order to make the gameplay less safe and more startling.
