Ok. I want to make a 32-pixel version of the brown and grey crates that are 64 pixels for use in my own wad. I take the two halves of those images (from doom2 using wintex), and copy and paste them into paint, making a whole 64X64 image. I copy and paste both of those into irfanview and re-size them down to 32X32 and save, making two 32X32 bitmaps of those crates. Now when I change them back to 256 colors, they get all screwy-colored, but they're just re-makes of the originals. How do I get these pictures to convert to 256 color without any major changes occurring?

I know I'm being vague, but if you need me to I can upload the bitmaps, either the 64X64s or the 32X32s.

How are you resizing them? IrfanView has tons of options for that. Also be aware that unless you're using batch, IrfanView ALWAYS dithers the colors when you downsample (ie 24bit->8bit, etc). You shouldn't be changing color depth during the process, but IrfanView might automatically do that when you resize or something.

I think it would be easier just to manually create a 32x32 version of the texture. Liberal use of cut'n'paste will do wonders.

Unless you specifically tell a program to use a certain palette, it'll default to its own (or if it's in 24 bit mode, it'll use that). I have a couple programs that do this. You realize that paint can resize images, right?

That's strange ... I realized that I can tell irfanview to 'resize only', not 'resize and resample'. Oddly enough, after doing so, the grey 32 crate comes out fine. But the brown one is the grey color. I know that it's not just a grey repeat because the number on the bottom-right changes from two to three, but it's still grey.

IMO, IrfanView doesn't do a good job with paletted images. If you have a true color image with say, 100 distinct colors, changing it to 8 bit still dithers the image! I told the author about this, but the only change I see is that he made this process optional for the batch conversions.

So how can I get that brown 32 pixel image to be grey? Could I upload it and have someone do it for me?

oh and paint doesn't really re-size it, it just cuts off the extra.

No, you're dragging the size of the bitmap in that case. Try clicking "select all" and then drag the corner.

try using a decent program like Paintshop Pro.. i use it all the time for my doom editing needs.

I tried that too and it still turns grey :(

ah well ill just use grey only

besides it's a jokemap so only one color is good :)

You don't have to settle for that, you can still do it with paint:

1. Open the bitmap in paint.
2. Click Edit/Select all.
3. Drag the bottom-right corner to 32*32 size.

Try this free prog: http://meesoft.logicnet.dk/Analyzer/ the 668K version is all you need. No ads or nags, just a great free program. You can save the Doom2 palette with it and apply to any .bmp you create. Powerful (and free) combination with MSPAint.
