It's definitely good practice to forget about size...but not completely. I've had times where I started my map by drawing one huge sector, trying to make something really immense and crazy. I usually wouldn't finish anyway, but starting like that gets you to think "How am I going to fill in this space?" You should be thinking, what can I add next? Starting simple also allows you, as others have said, to experience all parts of map building. Architecture, items, monsters, and functional things like doors and the exit are all very important. It's good to create a whole level rather than get hung up because your castle took hours to draw...
