I've seen this sky texture you can see in Contra 3 used as a background elsewhere (somewhere other than a doom wad) but I'm having no luck searching for it. Particularly the background with the buildings with chunks ripped out of them. I want that standalone texture but can't seem to find it anywhere. Can anyone help me out?

Wow, Contra 3, I still have that game and the boss (mainly last) is hard, but fun.

But sorry, I don't know any sort of mapset that'd have the bg of that general area.

Does the background scroll separately from the other layers? If so, load it up in ZSNES, and use keys 1-4 to disable some layers. Then make screenshots.

It does seem to.

I have no interest in SNES emulators but I do like jigsaw puzzles! So I cobbled this together from the images at the site Mech linked to:
