I don't know what whoever made the palette was thinking when they decided the red should fade to brown.
I like that fade-down; when I was first playing Doom, demons were alternating between pink and brown, and I first thought there are two breeds of demons (I wasn't believing in the spectre back then).

Sweet. Looked at the rest of the maps in there and they kind of suck, no offense. :P

M1 perhaps does. Can't say I ever heard a bad word about any of the others so I'm not sure you're a qualified judge, no offense :P

PIPEWAL*: I just "discovered" this texture, and I think it works very well in a lot of places. It looks a lot better than the other pipe textures.

Ah yeah, that was the reason I needed a darker TEKWALL4!
Had a lot of fun with those and some other modded versions here.

And yeah, lotta love for COMPBLUE :D
I once set a 'minimalist mapping challenge' over on Zdaemon where both Op-Cow and Godcells turned in all-COMPBLUE maps. Milian made a wicked one out of just SKSPINE1 (with a fitting flat) too.

Hell knights and barons of hell are difficult to tell apart in darker areas.

To me red's fade to brown seems completely natural in DOOM... not surprising after years of playing the game.

I don't really like it. It butchers the look of dark areas with red textures. And it's actually a problem for gameplay under certain specific situations.

COMPBLUE is my personal favorite - I just love the color blue, it's got a great pattern to it, and I've always wanted to build a whole map out of blue textures.

Oh! Yes! Forgot this one, too. Looove blue. Especially dark rooms with bright blue highlights in them. Like that one E1 map with the window with the Soul Sphere secret visible in it. I used to go crazy wanting to try to get to that fucking thing the first time I played. :P

The effect on play is there, but it's intentional within the bounds of the palette limitations; to muddle the view adding loss of color to darker colors to create the illusion of shadows. This is where DOOM's palette is better than Heretic's, producing a gloomier atmosphere with the limited resources.

The red to brown fade is more noticeable today, as in the early '90s most CTRs were darker than most of today's monitors or monitor settings (LCDs or CTRs enhanced by graphics card that apply gamma correction).

I used to use the METAL2-7 textures everywhere in my maps, and in fact I think I overused them to the point that I don't like them so much anymore. Although to be fair, better mappers than myself have often made it look really cool. :) Also, there were some levels in TNT that used the same texture rather poorly.

All the computer textures are excellent and only a handful of them can basically make a complete techbase. As others have said, all the best computer textures were not carried over to Doom II which is disappointing. I think I'd have to put COMPSTA1-2, just because they always look good set into literally any wall with lights to go with them.

Honestly, I've kinda gotten sick of doom 2 textures, but i guess the best ones are ones I often see the least. For example, CEMENT textures, are really good looking but hard to use effectively due to not having any measured bevels.

I also like ZIMMER textures when used in outdoor areas.

I like the Doom textures that have not been kept in Doom 2, because they're classic yet "new" in that they're not used that much, given that the overwhelming majority of Doom maps are for Doom 2.

When I play Chocolate DOOM, I play on a CRT without gamma correction. I need 1.5 gamma correction on ZDoom-based ports, though. My monitor must be really bright for a CRT or something.... (also it's interesting that Chocolate DOOM has better visibility on a low gamma level than the ZDoom software renderer - everything is dark but you can still see it well)

That whole red-brown thing is annoying in ZDaemon CTF.

E1M3? Run up the stairs and into the room with the yellow key really quickly. The entrance to the hallway with it is on the left side of the room, but you have to be fast.

That's odd. On my system ZDoom with gamma 1.0 and Chocolate Doom with gamma 0 look pretty much the same, and both look much like Doom with gamma 0. Some feature, either reducing or increasing gamma under certain circumstances must be affecting one of the engines on your computer.

Brick8. Looks good, easy to use, is versatile...

I like all the bricks really, and the brown(grn)/bronze set, the slad set, and the star* set.

I love these too. I often feel like I'm committing "brown abuse" when I make levels full of BROWN96 and SUPPORT3.

Same here. They just seem to blend in so seamlessly and there's plenty of complimentary flats to use with them.

Yeah versatile but can be a pain in the ass to align right. You know when you think you've got it done and then you look up close and realise everything's still off? If I'm working with a BRICK then I often replace it all with something blindingly simple like ZZWOLF13 so I can get the vertical alignment done right, and then switch it back.

Speaking of the Wolfenstein textures - no fans? :P
I guess DooMAD's above comment about the browns sums up why not.

I like doom's grittier version of the wolfenstein rock texture. ROCK5 I think it is? The orangey version is too smoothe, and the quake version is nice but a little too gritty. Doom's version makes a good desert themed level.

This here little thing I glued together.

As for a stock texture, EXITDOOR. SLADWALL is pretty good, too.

It just occured to me not long ago that on the center of of EXITDOOR is a big piece of warning stripes. I don't know why but I always thought it was some giant gold rivet with a weird reflection on it

Yeah, I always thought the same thing, too, until I looked at it one day a few months ago and it suddenly popped right out at me.

I always thought it was a big shiney piece of bronze or something. JDTP's exitdoor is made to this effect too.

Regardless of what it is, I'd say the warning colors are used there to make it easier to spot from a distance.

Lol - that exitdoor remake reminds me of something from Doctor Who.

I have many "favorites" from the stock Doom2 textures, for to keep it simple, the first one I can remember liking a lot was COMPBLUE - in one of my first maps I made a whole room out of it, with weird terraces and caves and crap. I must've been in my early teens...

Of course with that comes FLAT14 (one of my current faves still), and the COMPWALL series. I wish Doom2 had kept/expanded on all the Doom1 textures instead of abandoning some - many of them are still really good textures.

Brick10 and Support3.

They look great at all light levels so they are very versatile.

I guess the skies are technically textures as well, then I guess the red skies would win it for me.
