How do I get large pictures as textures like Huy Pham did in Deus Vult in the cathedral?

Shrink them first with Photoshop/GIMP, unless you want a single texture the size of a skyscraper.

I did that, but when I put them in using XWE there is an unsightly black line through the middle.

In Deus Vult the large textures are split up into 3 parts and then assembled as upper, middle and lower textures. If you do this the same way, then your graphics editing must be precise to not show any horizontal lines.

In ZDoom you can use large textures, 4096 x 4096 is possible. Just make sure that they are a power of 2 in size.

It wasn't actually a line, it was more like a large black rectangle, but I didn't split the picture at all.
