Sloffie's E2M8 Remake

Recommended Posts

Yes, this is my first post on the forum. Decided jumping in the deep end is more lucrative than paddling in the splash pool. ;)

I have decided to get involved in the Doom community as I have been playing both Doom and Doom 2 for many years and I feel I also have something to contribute.
Have worked on DoomCAD back on WIN98 and a few years ago I found Doom Builder and then moved to DB2 when it was released.

I am no expert mapper, but I have been fiddling with the software for years now. None of my creations are jawdropping yet, but I am working on a few WADs at the moment.

My aim is to build maps that are fun to play and present a fair challenge.

Enough of that...

Here is my remake of E2M8. It is built for ZDoom, uses standard textures. Idea is to make it more challenging by including environmental hazards so you cannot just strafe without thinking to avoid the rockets.

Here are some screenshots for now:

Internet here in dark Africa is very slow at the moment as the SEACOM cable linking us to the US or whatever is bust. So once that is sorted, I will upload more info and release the WAD for your enjoyment. Needs a few final touches though.

Visually, it's a damn sight better than the last E2M8 remake that came to these forums. What's with that random wood texture on the bottom screenshot though?

Don't you think that the red bricks on the third screen look really out of place? Like seriously, why are they there?

btw. Try looking at the tall pillar with faces, and scrolling the page up and down. (smooth scrolling off in the browser options) It's like an optical illusion lol.

Oh yes... that! Its actually a platform. There are stairs behind that pillar which then lead to the platform from where you then have access to a switch to lower the blue armor.
Looking at it now, it does look odd. Will make that marble as well to blend in better.

Welcome to the Doomworld Community!

Anyways, nice map, looks great, are you going to use ACS scripts?

Thanks.

I have only started learning to write scripts only very recently. But it is still basic stuff like deep water (changing the colour of the sector) and fog and so on. No fancy stuff yet.
I added no scripting to this map. Just basic stuff.
The tentacle floor has very high friction, so the player can get "stuck". You are not bogged down, just move very slow. That makes it tricky when engaging the cyberdemon, as you have to be careful not to strafe into the tentacles.

I quickly changed the textures. Memfis had a point about those red bricks. I just chose a reddish texture for the "tentacle pools" to fit with a bloody look. The flesh texture did not work as it clashes with the rock floor. Changed it to metal, looks better now I must add.

go tu HUD settings in the options and turn on "alternative HUD". it'll replace the other fullscreen HUD Zdoom has.
