Liam Posted August 21, 2001 The music of Slipknot and Britney Spears, internally, is not all that different (sorry Liam). If you could explain that to me...He's talking about the complexity and songwriting - whether it's the same 3 hip-hop loops 40 times in a row or the same 3 blaring guitar tracks 40 times in a row, it's the same shit over and over again. Oh, ok. Well with slipknot I could agree, although I think the songwriting, although sketchy, is still better. Now mudvayne... anybody who's bashing them for being a slipknot clone shoul die... mudvayne stomps slipknot and eats them for breakfast. Most mudvayne songs are varied and the lyrics are anywhere from mediocre(dig) to very good(nothing to gein). Oh, and one horrible horrible set of lyrics, but it was meant that way (poop loser). And BTW, we've got a whole metal music argument here and diluted misses it... 0 Share this post Link to post
læmænt Posted August 21, 2001 The music of Slipknot and Britney Spears, internally, is not all that different (sorry Liam). If you could explain that to me... They're not very different, from a musician's point of view. They have almost the same harmonic and melodic structure, almost always the same form (verse-chorus-verse or verse-chorus-verse-chorus-solo-chorus or any other variation), they just have different instrumentation, tempo and shit like that; and, the main thing, they're just TOO FUCKING PRIMITIVE to be considered different. The lyrics, though, are different... somewhat :) and Slipknot for those average teenagers who think they're "non-conformists". Uhm... I don't think I'm a non-conformist... Well, then, you're not one of the main group for which Slipknot is intended :) It is also mainly intended for English-speakers, but some non-speakers still buy it, too. I buy the music, not the image. Again, i'm talking about most of the people, i.e. the guys Slipknot actually makes money off. Well agreed... slipknot isn't "great" music... but I don't just see why it also has to be "bad" music... I never said it was bad (or did I? =) It's just not what they (Slipknot) are for. Writing songs is just a side-effect of their main show-biz activity. See, the real artists - truly creative people - write music (or paint, or write or whatever) because they HAVE TO. Because it's their life. Because if they stop creating they might just go and kill themselves. They're not quite normal people. But show-biz people write music to make money. No talent, genius, or emotions are involved in the process. We have four bars of A, so now we put four bars of D. Then back to A. That's not how writing music is supposed to look like. To many people the end results might look the same; but the first one is a work of genius, and the second, rather, of manufacture and cloning. It's empty inside. The stuff they produce, apparently, is called 'music' because of some weird mistake. No, it's music alright... just not music we're used to... No, it's not music alright. It's music inasmuch as it has harmony, melody and rhythm, but not further. Oh well. Slipknot isn't even in my top 20 bands (Mudvayne is in the top 10, but...). I guess I just won't talk about them, except for the occasional "slipknot kixass" when someone brings it up. I'll talk instead about the tons of other metal/punk/alternative that me and the rest of the forum can all enjoy. Umm, I have nothing against you personally, talk about whatever you like :) 0 Share this post Link to post

Well, then, you're not one of the main group for which Slipknot is intended :) It is also mainly intended for English-speakers, but some non-speakers still buy it, too. Proudly... Again, i'm talking about most of the people, i.e. the guys Slipknot actually makes money off. I never said it was bad (or did I? =) It's just not what they (Slipknot) are for. Writing songs is just a side-effect of their main show-biz activity. Agreed. See, the real artists - truly creative people - write music (or paint, or write or whatever) because they HAVE TO. Because it's their life. Because if they stop creating they might just go and kill themselves. They're not quite normal people. And I like those people/bands more than any sellout numetal band, 'cept Mudvayne :) [/quote]But show-biz people write music to make money. No talent, genius, or emotions are involved in the process. You make tons of money for writing sub-par songs, i'd do it too. To many people the end results might look the same; but the first one is a work of genius, and the second, rather, of manufacture and cloning. It's empty inside. True. Very very true. Umm, I have nothing against you personally, talk about whatever you like :) Thanx :). Nice to see someone argue my point without really going "This sucks, that sucks, it sounds crappy, that band sucks" and so forth. 0 Share this post Link to post

deadnail Posted August 22, 2001 Hrmm. Bands like Marlyn Manson and Slipknot have a vast amount of untapped potential. Bands like Static-X and Spineshank are on the verge of tapping it but do need some help. Bands like VAST and to a lesser extent Stratovarius are doing a really fucking kickass job on their own but you will never see their videos on MTV. Empty-vee, I mean. I see people listening to this trendfuck bullshit with their $300 portable MP3 players at 128kbps and man, they're getting exactly what they deserve. Ignorance is bliss, and the RIAA is feeding off of it like a fucking shark. As for NES emulators... if you have to go pure DOS then there's no competition for RockNES, although fwNES comes close. Its a bit harder to get going though but the compatibility can't be beat. Nesticle used to rock but it has just been surpassed. I use a lot of emulators, NESten and JNes are my two personal favorites. ZSNES is the undisputed king of SNES emulation. 800 by 600, interpolation, 60fps, Super Metroid...... spoooooooge MAME is slow as fuck but its difficult to find any other emulators and keep them all in order for all the different games done. Aliens vs Predator, Metal Slug X, and ESP RA.DE all in one emulator? Swank. My P3-450 can't always keep up at the original resolution but fuck it, it works fine enough. As for other fun DOS games, don't forget Hexen, Duke, ROTT and Blood. 0 Share this post Link to post

I use a lot of emulators, NESten and JNes are my two personal favorites. <egocentric mode> I bet I use more emulators. I was even the translator for the documentation of SSF, the first Sega Saturn emulator to play commercial games (at a THRILLING 5 fps) </egocentric mode> Of course, I also collect old consoles, so I'm using less and less emulators as I collect more and more. ZSNES is the undisputed king of SNES emulation. 800 by 600, interpolation, 60fps, Super Metroid...... spoooooooge I never liked Super Metriod all that much. And WHY does everyone stretch the graphics display? I use 640x480 non-stretch with the super2xsai engine. And the aspect ratio is maintained. MAME is slow as fuck but its difficult to find any other emulators and keep them all in order for all the different games done. Aliens vs Predator, Metal Slug X, and ESP RA.DE all in one emulator? Swank. My P3-450 can't always keep up at the original resolution but fuck it, it works fine enough. Use Final Burn Alpha for AvP. It runs the game a lot smoother. Metal Slug X is great, but I'm waiting for the new year, when they add Metal Slug 3. As for other fun DOS games, don't forget Hexen, Duke, ROTT and Blood. Duke is great. Rott is fun for a while, but you really need a LAN to get the most out of it. I didn't like blood. AND HEXEN FUCKING RULES! (I like inserting my $0.02 CDN into every post about emulation.) 0 Share this post Link to post
Captain Red Posted August 22, 2001 I am truly amazed at how this thread has been discussed in a civil manner without intervention. /me applauds. Yeah. I make a point not to discuss music with any one I don’t really know well. That's how wars get started. Or maybe it's just the fuckheads I hang around with. 0 Share this post Link to post

I bought a Saturn and a Gameshark for it last year just so I could play the import of Castlevania: SOTN. Yes, I paid for all of that shit just for the two extra areas. =) I never liked Super Metriod all that much. And WHY does everyone stretch the graphics display? I use 640x480 non-stretch with the super2xsai engine. And the aspect ratio is maintained.Don't say you don't like Super Metroid or I'll have to stomp you. I have a PSX gamepad plugged into my USB keyboard... so I stretch the graphics display and get over on my bed. Looks kickass. =) Use Final Burn Alpha for AvP. It runs the game a lot smoother. Metal Slug X is great, but I'm waiting for the new year, when they add Metal Slug 3.I was using Final Burn until Dave called it quits. I might try one of the newer ports of it. Metal Slug is fucking awesome and I can't wait for 3! Duke is great. Rott is fun for a while, but you really need a LAN to get the most out of it. I didn't like blood. AND HEXEN FUCKING RULES!Duke, check. Rott, check. Blood, ......bastard!! Blood fucking rules! It 0wnz your ass! It's almost as good as Hexen!! 0 Share this post Link to post

ShadyXMR Posted August 23, 2001 I avoid talking about music with anyone anymore. It has become such a personal groupie issue it seems. It appears as if that if you own someone's CD, you are permanently affiliated with that artist and are now their bitch. Fans of the various genres are always having wars against each other, much like politics, another flammable topic. 0 Share this post Link to post
