No Doom SFX with AC97?

I cant get Doom to play the sound effects properly when I run it. I get this kind of mish mash of distorted sfx. The music plays perfectly, but no shots, monsters snarling etc, as they should. All distorted. And the computer runs like an absolute dog wnehever it tries to play the sfx.

I'm running AC97 onboard sound chip, XP Pro, 2.4Ghz, 512Mb RAM. Any help greatly appreciated.
