I downloaded the latest Legacy beta, and knowing that it's a zip file I downloaded *cough*WinZip*cough* as well and attempted to start up the setup program. When I clicked on the setup button, the computer stalled for about 10 seconds and then gave me a complaint about something called Win95 RPC Wmsg Window not responding. I restarted the computer, redownloaded the setup program, and the same thing happened.

Also everytime I choose other things such as clear history under the Internet options or clear documents under the taskbar options, it completes the task but then freezes the options window and won't respond.

Everytime I attempt to reboot, I get one of those "not responding" windows about the same Win95 RPC Wmsg Window thing.

I have no idea what caused this or how to fix it, and it's getting pretty annoying. And no I don't want to have to fdisk and reinstall everything. So what's going on here?

Edit: And don't ask why it says Win95 'cause I don't know. This is a Win98 OS.

Looks to me like your PC's asking to be upgraded from 98 to 95, which I just did and by all means I would recommend you doing as well ;)

But did you upgrade Internet Explorer or anything else recently? It's near impossible to get 98 or 98se working properly with IE5.0+, there's always some kind of thing that will freeze or restart the computer until you've got no other option left but to reformat. Last time it was pull-down selection menus like the "Topics From 100 Days" that did me in.

It was upgraded to IE 5.5 for almost a year now and we had minimal problems. This RPC Wmsg problem just started today and is causing problems with the WinZip setup program, clear history, clear documents, and rebooting.

i gots Win98se and hell i reformat my hd at least 2 times a year, just to clean out the cobwebs. i reccommend doing that anyway, Zeratul, imo its worth the trouble. BTW i use ie 6.0 for several months and my comp's working fine, maybe you should upgrade to it. Who knows?

Somehow I don't think this problem has anything to do with what kind of OS I'm using. I don't even know what this RPC Wmsg Window thing is, and I think it would help a little if I knew what it was.

1. Use PowerArchiver instead of WinZip, trust me.

2. Upgrade to IE 6... it is much faster than 5.5 once you disable that retarded image toolbar.

Hell... I've been having those same problems for a while now. I usually just avoided them. But now Windows crashes everytime I try to open a file associated with a Windows program, so if I want to write my essays so I don't fail out of college, I have to go through the trouble of opening Works and then opening the file I want to use. I'm not sure if Windows is just being gimpy ("We should have the next upgrade done by about this time... but in the crash sequence here so they have to upgrade) or if I have some sort of virus. Either way, the only solution I can afford if things keep up is to reinstall Windows... again.

Really? I don't know if this is related to the problem, but you don't happen to have Webshots installed over there do you?

Great. Now the customize button under folder options: custom settings also locks everything up.

I check out that site and followed the recommendation of installing and running Ad-aware. Pretty nifty program there. Once it finished, I couldn't believe how many spyware components were detected on here.

They've all been successfully deleted. I rebooted the computer and I'm no longer getting those errors now. Thx man.

Glad that helped and I really wasn't sure if it would or not. Just hope your system stays stable. I ran that program too and it found a bunch spyware called gator on my machine. I was having problems shutting down and my comp would either hang a long time before shut down or it would lock. Seems to have cleared up that problem. God damned spyware!

Ours had mainly WebHancer crap. Heh...I was wondering what that whagent thing was in the task window. It froze the WinZip setup program, the clear history and clear documents function, the control panel took at least one minute to open, Windows wouldn't shut down without hanging for 20 seconds and then complain about that RPC Wmsg thing, and not to mention that 75% of the program wizards wouldn't open.

Glad it's gone...for now, but I know that as of right now there's probably more spyware components already loaded on here, but at least there's not 68.

Holy crap, 68 components is a lot. No wonder your computer was acting so fucked up....all that spyware shit trying to get out at the same time. I had a measly 10 components compared to your 68. I also had Go!Zilla on here and a dll from that prog came up as well, so I gave that whole prog the heave ho.

I wouldn't be surprised Go!Zilla is spyware. Shit, practically everything released by Real is spyware so if you can download it for free you prolly shouldn't.

I run AdAware every Sunday and it usually gets 5-15 nasty little bastards.

There was one it didn't catch, though, and this is another reason I simply FUCKING ADORE WinXP. I have Outlook Express set up so that it is the ONLY program with the right to send an email. Well, out of the blue one day I got a big ol' ugly message from OE (that wasn't even running at the time) saying that, "Hey, this asshole program here is trying to send an email! Whaddaya wanna do about it?"

So I checked the email it was trying to send... spam. It was trying to send a fucking spam. It tried to send one every four minutes until I found out which process was doing it and killed it, then deleted the fucker.

Even though it's fairly gay Outlook Express 6 gets a Goddamn good rating in my book for catching that shit.

BTW, apparantly even though I'm on XP and have only NTFS file systems I can run DOS apps. I'm going to look further into this but needless to say I'm a happy bitch. =)

Doom Dude, I love you. My computer is actually working again. First time through I cought 63 of those bastards, 2 of which refused to be moved (they were in use) so I had to restart. Second time through I cought 15, and the same 2 files (which may have spawned the rest when I restarted) refused to leave again. I'm going to try disconnecting my modem and see if that stops the 2 rouge files from running (as you can tell, I have no idea what I'm doing), but I'm open to any suggestions on how to kill them otherwise.

Disconnect from the net. Control+Alt+Delete. Highlight one of them that's running and hit CLOSE. Nothing'll probably happen. Do it again in about 10 seconds and an ugly END TASK or WAIT box will pop up. Hit end task. Now you can delete it.

If that doesn't work, just write down where AdAware says they are and get at 'em from DOS. =)

Hey good, EllipsusD, you killed off those little bastards. Now that you mention it deadnail, I'm sure I heard before that Go! bastard Zilla was spyware, but I never thought much more about it, until now. Sure as hell glad I clued in to this spyware shit before I ended up with 68 + Though I do think my Firewall should be blocking some of this crapp from either getting in or getting out.

Like I mentioned earlier, we have Webshots desktop installed over here and something similar to your email thing happened to it. It would start up every one minute leaving the task window filled with a whole lot of Webshots.

I had a hard time getting rid of a IEHELPER.dll There are supposedly 2 different files with the same name. One is a dll that comes with some legit software and the other is a file that loads random pop-up ads while your surfing around. This fuck will even make a pop-up advertisment appear while your on a site that has no pop-ups. Ad-aware reported this dll yesterday but I left it alone because I was unsure what it was exactly. So I did some searching and figured out that the file on my comp was the pop-up advert bastard. It refused to be moved and I had to edit the registry first, then reboot and finally ad-aware removed it.

If you have this IEHELPER.dll file, the advert one is around 104kb in size. Open the dll with wordpad. Look for the word "Blackstone" in the mess of symbols and txt. If you see Blackstone then it's definitely the offensive dll.

Windows will most likely not allow you to just delete it, so you have to go into the registry and do it yourself:

Click the "Start" button, click "Run" and type "regedit" and press Enter.
Find the and delete the entry named " HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Brows
er Helper Objects\{00000000-5eb9-11d5-9d45-009027c14662}".
Delete the {00000000-5eb9-11d5-9d45-009027c14662} entry.
Reboot computer.
Search your "C" drive for IEHelper.dll
Delete IEHelper.dll

I must just say thanks to Deadnail for lighting the path to Powerarchiver, I always knew Winzip was sh1te but never knew what else to check.
Anyways, seems like we all have our tech. problems. Lets face it, Windows has alwys been shit full stop. Is there a wad out there replaces the cyberdemon with Bill Gates? Actually, make that the former human, more like Bill's strength, and much more fun to into a red mess!! ;> (sorry, Bill)
