Um, warez are bad, m'kay? Don't post warez. 'Cause if you post warez on this site, then you're banned...m'kay? 'Cause...warez are bad. M'kay?
But on the subject at hand...one of the things I've found makes Doom so immersive is that there's really no definition to the main character. All we know is that he is a space marine and that he grins when he picks guns up. Beyond that, we don't have a name, we never hear his voice, and we never have to see him in cutscenes or interacting with other characters or anything. Therefore, it is very easy for us to imagine that we are the ones blowing shit up, rather than controlling a character.
On the subject of who projects onto who, I would say that it is a combination of both: we are playing the role of the Doomguy, in the sense that we are becoming marines on Phobos/Deimos/etc., but our own characteristics become part of his character, since his is so limited and therefore can be easily filled in.
Am I making sense? :P
