I know what music track I hate! It's the Heretic ending text music. It's so basic it's like meant to be skipped, unlike its Doom ctrparts.
Personally the only song i like in Heretic is E2M3 the river of fire (think thats the name)

Other than that i dont like Heretic music a lot.

Before the equal tempering was introduced (19. century), the differences between keys were more clearly marked. Why is that? I wish I knew myself.

This is because the frequency values on untempered keys doesn't add up the same way as tempered across octaves. Try on a guitar with a tuner. If you play a tone on the bottom fret, then the one an octave over on the same string you'll notice that it's not "tuned". A piano is tempered, because a "temperature" is set (meaning a basis frequency all strings are tuned after) before tuning it, thus making all the keys a little out of tune, but it being able to play across all octaves in tune. The result on untempered music would also be that the overtones would be different as well, and this is probably what you notice the most. (they are what differs voices from each other etc, go wiki it)

I'm not sure if I make sense to you, english isn't my first language.

I understand. I do because I'm a musician. Equal temperament (as in modern music) was introduced for practical reasons, bacause the old way (meaning semitones not being equal, but tempered in thirds being equal) meant that not all keys could be played (even if it was technically possible on keyboards), because it sounded fugly, and offkey.

But, still, even with equal temperament, the keys still "feel" different. Everyone with some musical (and even some not so musical) ears can confirm that. And many musicians have their "favorite key" that particularly moves them. So do I. And some associations with moods that the keys conjure seem to be surprisingly consistent with different people (I know it's hard to read, sorry).

What I don't understand is why that happens. I've searched various sources and couldn't find a rational explanation. Is it because of the overtones (or aliquote tones)?

Not really a kid. Not really an airbag. WHAT THE HELL IS IT?!? Who's asking? Are you French? An airbag is a safety device in a car that inflates during a collision and blocks you from smashing your head into the dashboard or steering wheel!

Off the top of my head...

D_E1M1 and D_RUNNIN, maybe just because they're the default song for any pwad without custom music so I've heard them so many freaking times.

Also not fond of D_E1M6, D_E1M8, D_E1M9, D_E2M1, D_E3M2, D_E3M8, D_THE_DA.

I think I like the one in DOOM II a bit more (maybe the many 1-on-1 DM matches helped), although they are both best used in shorter levels.
I think I'll take the latter statement back now, as it seems somewhat better in Map15 than in Map01, because it's got something epic about it...

I don't know, D_RUNNIN and D_RUNNI2 sound about the same to me. They're the same filesize and length.

Indeed, they're the same track; I mean it seems to fit better in the more open and larger level.

It's not called RUNNIN for nothing, it seems. It does fit the huge amount of custom MAP01 modifications that are designed to be long but poor of challenges or monsters.

But its original Sound Blaster DOS instruments annoy me. I don't know what they did with Doom 2, but with Doom2.wad, the SB overdriven guitar sounds less distorted than on Doom.wad. Try with DOSBox a Doom2 wad that uses imported Doom music, like 1killtng or twzone (vanilla megawads).

On the contrary, if you ask me; DOOM II gives a more resonant and rich sound set than DOOM. Try and have DOOM play D_STALKS if you want a sample.

They are different because the GENMIDI lumps aren't the same (some instruments were changed or modified).

Right. I had heard that in a Doom megawad and it sounded bad because the bass was too loud and the rest too soft... The bass parasites other tracks too, such as the one originally from MAP03 now sounding like Wolfenstein music, heh.

Explains a lot why there's much more guitar and easily catchy music in Doom 1.

Indeed. I didn't know that.
I recorded E1M1 in OPL3 stereo in the other thread recently: http://www.sendspace.com/file/her9xu
In Plutonia, the same song sounds like this: http://www.sendspace.com/file/izacn0

That might be it. But what is most likely the cause is that some frequencies reminds you of other natural sounds which gives you a different set of emotions, it is probably connected to your memory as a child and all that. I'm sure you get it.

Doom 2's MAP30 is terrible boss music. I was expecting something more like E3M8.

I don't get it how anybody could hate E1M5, E1M7 and E2M6, there three of the most evil sounding music tracks in all of Doom! Or well there is Also E1M8 i guess.

Well, I would prefer blasting away demons to something a little more hardcore myself, but maybe that's just me.

The evil soundtracks are always my favorite ones. MAP09 is good to though.

Remember when music hardware was worse, but the game music was better? 8-bit all the way. Before this fancy "MIDI" crap, All we had were square waves, triangle waves, noise, and pulse! And if you wanted a cool sound effect or two, super-low-bitrate DPCM wave.

But when awesome, cool-sounding MIDI synth and string patches and badass drums came onto the scene, people could get lazy!!

Haha okay. My hated music tracks... I don't know. Lots of Doom2 tracks are just plain boring, and could really make the levels better if the music had been at least somewhat good. Overall not much Doom music in general is really that good.

I remember back in the day, I thought the track D_ROMERO was pretty cool... but then later on, I discovered it was just a Pantera ripoff. So yeah, not a big Doom music fan. However, nostalgia alone will encourage me to listen to remixes, and often the remixes of Doom tunes have been pretty good.

I personally love all the Heretic music. In fact, it's the only old first person shooter DOS game that I still keep the original music for. I replace the others with stuff like the PSX music.

The only Heretic song I don't mind is E1M1. The music isn't varied enough for me.

Hmm I still haven't heard the 64 or PSX versions' music. Is it worth making the effort to find & hear?

It's all very Atmospheric music, like a sort of Ambience, even.
