The automap is great. I refer to it a lot.

I was a bit horrified when games started coming out that didn't have an automap. Sure, it was because they had true 3D or whatever, but it seemed like a big step backwards nonetheless, and a good reason to stick with Doom.

amen to that. i remember how much quake pissed me off in the beginning because it had no automap and the levels mostly looked the same, brown and green everywhere. the automap is very helpful in large, sprawling doom maps, and it might also give a clue where to look for secrets.

I agree entirely. I don't see a good reason why they don't implement automaps. Even a plan view of the level that is essentially an X-ray aerial photo of the level would be fine. So what if some bits would be overlaid? That's how the map is. Not having one is still annoying in modern FPSs, even after a decade or more of them being missing.

Another vote for the automap here. It's one of the main reasons I enjoy Blake Stone a lot more than Wolf 3D.

^ Now that you mention wolf3d, does the mac version feature an automap? I swear I thought the jaguar port (which was mac based) had an automap.
