I find the chaingun useful for taking care of other hitscan monsters or inflicting high pain chance on revenants and arch viles, and it has no recoil. Also, it's perfect accuracy makes it very useful for sniping. This saved me in the later maps of scythe2.

Meaning after you let loose with some shots it can fire again right away, where as the shotguns and plasma gun have reloads...I guess that's a better word for it.

It has a very very slight recoil... almost unnoticeable though (but can screw you over in a millisecond decision situation).

I kinda neglect using the chaingun, I just seem to forget I ever have it, I pick it up, use it for 3 seconds and then switch and forget. PG is good against Spider Masterminds, I fought one with a chaingun and nearly got raped, but switched to PG and I was hitting the pain chance enough where on the the Mastermind got only 2 shots on me.

I tend to do a lot of burst-firing with the chain gun, to use it as a poor man's sniper rifle.

i use me good ol' plasma rifle when i need to bag me some big demons. normally i whore out the shotguns hardcore. i like the rocket launcher when there are plenty of baddies around and there is a decent amount of ammo. i use the bfg just for fun. i like the chaingun but it uses too much ammo, but its a sniper extraordinaire. berzerk fisting is pretty fun for me as well... heh. the only weapons that dont get a whole lotta love are the chainsaw and pistol.

well, if the chaingun had seperate ammo from the pistol, a slightly less powerful but faster rate of fire and more ammo (like 800) then it would be a pretty well balanced weapon in my opinion. or if the ammo cap was raised to 500 but had slightly more powerful hits and slightly slower rate of fire it would be nice as well.

I agree that the chaingun ought to have a higher ammo cap. Like JohnnyRancid said above, I am also attempting to make a map w/o the shotguns and there are ammo boxes strewn about everywhere. Think about this. 100 shells can take out 9-10 Hell Barons. However, 400 bullets can only kill 4 or so, so by the logic, the chaingun ought to have an ammo cap of 1000 bullets...

That there would be easy if you or someone else makes a map where it's a Chaingun only base (every weapon cept shotgun).

My idea with the Chaingun-
1. As DD said, put the cap to 1000.
2. Increase the power by 2-4 damage, still low but can kill more enemies in progress making it the 'not so neglected' weapon.

The sound is irritating, and most of the time the shots miss due to their slower movement speed.

Actually, I think ID was probably on the right track with the chaingun. I just made a new chaingun and all I did was increase the firing rate by 50% and played a few doom2 maps with it, and all of a sudden, the weapon is pretty powerful. And the only thing preventing it from being "overpowered" if it wasn't already is that there isn't enough ammo to abuse it.

I also tried making it shoot 4x the bullets and you could kill Cybs with that in <10 seconds, so I'd say 1 bullet is plenty.

Perhaps mappers are simply not accustomed to making maps that capitalize on the chaingun since the shotguns are more straight-forward to make maps with...

BTW, I love how this thread turned to neglecting the chaingun instead of the plasma gun. ;-)

I made some little gimmicks of maps to play with that have no shotgun. It's got a bunch of zombie men, imps, chaingun guys, some demons, and a couple hell knights. It was a little fun. Something that bothers me is that the chaingun reglarly causes monsters to go into their "pain state" right before they attack, which stops monsters such as hell knights from being threatening at all. So I just kinda stood there spraying bullets at him until he died.

Also in order to make the chaingun be usable, I had to start the map up with a backpack at the start, and put 3-6 bullet boxes in every room. Even then, I finished the map with about 120 bullets.

To avoid the boringness of fighting hell knights that are harmless when they never stop going "OOOWWWWW" In maps where the chaingun is the ideal weapon, you should never make fights with one monster at a time (unless it's a boss monster such as a cybie or an archvile). In order to compensate for that, You need LOTS of bullet boxes in every room, or long lines of ammo clips.

This thread might have spawned a new mapping style - the 1 weapon map.

@Death-Destiny - discussing the chaingun is another way of neglecting the plasma gun. :-)

Ever played through Doom 1 Episode 1 without using the chaingun at Nightmare skill?

I believe it will be doable in case you are a tough player or experienced pacifist runner, but I imagine it is much harder than mowing your path through all those humanoid monsters using the chaingun like i used to do...

Never really thought about Nightmare skill, I do recall playing E1 on nightmare and having an extremely hard time not being able to finish the maps because i simply could not kill the excessive number of shotgun guys before they made me into swiss cheese.
