I think ZDoom (or a similar port) really is the best way to introduce/re-introduce someone to Doom, as it provides freelook, higher resolution and the option to remove all auto-aim; features that are just plain expected nowadays. If they play Doom and like it, then eventually they're likely to ask either, "What was Doom like originally?" in which case you point them in the direction of Chocolate Doom, or "Does it get any more advanced than this?" in which case you point them towards some advanced feature-filled mods for hardware rendering ports.

IIRC, in Hexen, the fighter doesn't have any gun. :p Spiked gauntlets, axe, hammer and sword, yes. Gun, no. ;)
That's debatable, knowing how ZDoom allows DECORATE to work regardless of game...

Is there really no Collector's Edition book box in the stores anymore? Are they sold-out already?

EDIT:

You missed the anti-Steam tinfoil hat bandwagon by about five years.
How do you know it? You weren't registered five years ago.

It's true that many are used to that stuff, but that's not an innocent way to introduce people to the game, which basically offers precisely a lack of most 3D features (freelook, jumping, room over room) as part of its essential ass-kicking gameplay. It's much better to give new users a good list of currently used engines (at least Chocolate Doom, PrBoom/+, Doomsday, and G/ZDoom, for single player) with a concise and correct description of what they offer. Besides, JDoom seems more convenient than ZDoom if we consider what people are used to nowadays.

I'm not sure there is a port that doesn't change the behaviour in Hexen to some degree. I'm aware that DaniJ and co are making efforts to provide good compatibility in jHexen, but last time tried it (with the wad starship) there were some significant issues (which actually broke the hub structure IIRC).

Well, you might be interested to know that this bug was fixed in 1.9 Beta5 (though you could always get around the bug in earlier versions of the engine by simply warping to the first map in or out of a game).

So assuming enough of the HeXen related code rewrite is completed come 1.9 Beta6 (HeXen is unplayable for other reasons in 1.9 Beta5 due to half complete rewrites of part's of the code), it will hopefully be fully playable.
