I listen to the music in the game. It's there for a reason, you know. Even after over a decade, it doesn't get old.

I don't understand why some people are so compelled to mix their musical tastes with everything they do. I'm not a very big fan of music to begin with, but I certainly wouldn't go about integrating it with something like DOOM.

And who knows, maybe I'm wrong. But that's extremely unlikely because I'm always right.

I used to be a big fan of the midis, but now they always get stuck in my head because they are so repetitive. And they will be stuck in my head FOREVER...

It's really annoying. That's why I listen to really fast and short hardcore punk and powerviolence songs. Same heavy beats, but really short so they don't get stuck in your head.

Coldplay sucks herpes dick. But that is just my honest opinion.

I listen to psytrance, brutal death metal, and black metal when playing Doom. I actually pretty much listen to all this all the time.

Depend, most of time i'll listen to the music in Doom. When i don't i go with stuff like Helloween, Iron Maiden, 3 inches of blood, etc, etc.

EDIT: I love how most Doom players are into heavy metal. 8)

I usually listen to what the level provides. If I don't like it, I turn it off, and don't put anything else going.

I actually enjoy playing without any music some times. Music, just like in movies, gives you certain emotional responses. Without it all you have to listen to are the sounds of growling demons and bucking shotguns - which can be highly effective in setting the mood.

I have my own personal wad, which was designed for doom 2, a specific song is select for a level. For Example, Level 26 (The abandoned mines if I'm correct) Has an underground / Meritorious themed song. Level 7 (Dead Simple) Has a fast mute city remix, to make the battle seem epic lol.

If it's not the level's original music, then either Mark Klem's, Xaser's, or my own. :P [/ego]

Possibly why just about every song Prince put in it was sampled from a rock/metal song =P

Lately it's been Nirvana. Only their Bleach album, though.

My first preference is usually the in-game music, especially if it's a new wad. There are some good midis out there, some crappy ones, but I at least try to give it a listen or two. If it proves to be crappy or annoying, I'll turn it off and maybe listen to other music on MediaPlayer.

My personal musical tastes are all over the place, from black metal to symphonic/orchestral soundtracks and lots of weird stuff (and mainstream) in between. For music that I would typically consider good/appropriate for playing Doom to, here's a few of my faves:

Fear Factory
Bolt Thrower
Circle of Dust
(some) Skinny Puppy
(old) Mortification
Arch Enemy
Coal Chamber
High On Fire
Pantera
The Crow Soundtrack
The Matrix Soundtrack (to a lesser degree)
The Prodigy
Children of Bodom
Slayer
And very occasionally the other mainstream stuff half the Doom music was derived from - NIN, Alice in Chains, Nirvana, Megadeth/Metallica?, etc.

Of course I have been known to listen to other kinds of music while playing Doom, but I wouldn't do it often or consider it appropriate for Doom.

And Coldplay have to be the most bland, weak-assed, feeble, inane pieces of dung to grace the music scene for years. They should be banned from the airwaves when there is even the slightest risk that people might be driving or operating machinery in case they are sent to sleep by the dull, featureless, forgettable, insipid dirge coming from Chris Martin and his soporific buddies. They are the beige of music. They are pale, oh so pale, inferior imitations of the bands that, apparently, inspired them. Quite why they felt the need to insult their inspirations by making such nauseatingly characterless imitations of their work is anyone's guess. Coldplay are the kind of band you could expect to go round to your mum's, or even granny's house and have her put on some Coldplay to prove how "trendy" she is. They are about as "indie" or "alternative" as 2.4 children, a black labrador and a mortgage. I mean, seriously, they're shit. In fact, calling them shit is an insult to faeces. At least scat has some character.

I almost feel sullied to visit a forum where someone says that Coldplay are good. I mean, I just don't understand... How could you?

Ask me about Coldplay. :P

Enjay, I always liked you. Now I like you even more. I agree with you on this so much. In rock music sucking is not the worst sin, being boring is.

I love black metal. When I listen to it I think of Hexen or Heretic.

Don't you think that Hexen's music is like softened black metal?

Death and Black Metal are the perfect musics to listen to while playing Doom (in fact much better than the musics lifted from original bands in the actual game like Pantera, for example.)

A band like Demilich (check their official page, all material is freeware) sounds like a Cyberdemon coming into view from some dark, brimstone cavern. The atmosphere of Darkthrone, Burzum, Demoncy, make the perfect backdrop to all things related to Doom.

I either let the level play its own music, or play without sound at all.

I never really listen to other music when I am playing doom, only when I am mapping and testing the maps (so I guess that counts as listening I guess, but mostly I turn it off before I loading up doom).

magicsofa said:

Something funny that has happened to me is making an association between doom and certain music. I once played through a megawad...I believe called caves of doom or destiny or what have you, while listening to linkin park's* first album. Anytime I hear that album, I get the image of doom levels in my head.

Heh, I don't really do that with doom. But I do it with Duke Nukem 3d and Metallica's Reload album.

Hey, I got some d-beat! And someone here knows about Demilich too!

Lately I've been getting in to bands that JohnnyRancid would like, such as Insect Warfare and Captain Cleanoff. And maybe he would know about Yacopsae? Perhaps Dead Infection, or even Neuropathia?

Oh, and I'm listening to bands in the genre of DOOM metal! Can't get much Doomier than that! Esoteric is a great doom metal band that I've been digging lately.

I've always been into Doom metal (early Anathema and others), but I don't quite equate much of it with Doom the game. Probably depends on the exact kind of Doom metal...
