Right. Most of Doom's pits have stairs, teleporters or elevators to escape. Some even lead to secret areas and/or useful items to pick up. Considering this, deadly pits with no escape seem rather unusual for Doom. How many are there actually?
Right from my memory, I can think of those in E1M3, when the exit bridge is risen in E2M2, at the exit bridge in E2M7, at the sides of the bridge in the east secret area in E3M3 and the pits under those crushers if you didn't hit the switches in E3M4.

When I first played the level I fell in the one in the first room
looking for secrets, but I started the level over again before I died.

Then I fell in the one around the oval platform area in the SNES version trying to jump from the area that the imp was on to the other main platform. I died looking for a way out. Is it only me, or does it seem like the the Doom Marine on the SNES has led in his boots, cause I've made that jump thousands of times on the PC.

Yeah, that was the joke :p

I'm sure I've died in almost any area of the DOOM and DOOM II levels. Certainly in the three (or four, if the bridge to the secret exit is raised) inescapable damaging pits in E1M3.

I accidently ran backwards into it while fighting monsters. I also accidently ran into it when trying to beat the level on NM also.

I also ran into it purposefully to see how to get out of it. That ended up being a failure.

In case anyone was wondering, I was talking about the acid pit in the very beginning. I mean come on, there's a medikit near the edge, and its only the third level. Of course you've had to have fallen in there once before. I kinda forgot about the outsides of that oval, but yeah that's killed me a couple times before too.

All those, except the more dynamic ones (E2M2, E3M4) are marked with the poison sign, so anyone jumping in out of curiosity shouldn't be complaining. Off the top of my head, I can think of four or five in DOOM II. One between the stairs you have to climb to get the red key in Map06 and two at the ledges at the end of Map24, one of which is raised if you get to the end of the catwalk. These are also marked with the poison sign. There's another in Map09 where you get ambushed by heavy weapon dudes for getting the rocket launcher. This one is not marked as poisonous. Since a ramp rises in the center, it can be counted as two pits.

Just remembered another one in MAP08. There are some nasty platforms at the way to the exit leading you trapped in the pit if you aren't careful.

Indeed, Map08 can become uncompletable in Co-op because of that.

Thankfully they're in topic with the level name.

I think the real question is not how many people have fallen into the pit, but how many people have fallen into it looking for secrets and whatnot, expecting to be able to escape. To me, that's what makes the whole thing such a bitch. Doom is full of secrets, many of them in acid pits. Those unescapable pits were cheap, id, you hear me?

I died in all of the E1M3 acid pits except for the one with the switch in - I was young and naive and wanted to see if there was anything interesting down there. There wasn't.

How so? As soon as you enter that area the teleporter to the exit opens at the entrance of the cacodemon chamber. Back in the early days, when I was a default-settings keyboarder, I'd always step in and out of the final hallway and rely on the teleporter to finish the level because I was quite afraid of not making it over the lowering blocks.

That reminds me, Map08 has yet another inescapable pit once the initial section of the red key room lowers. Getting the key opens the teleporter in front of the one that'll open for the exit, so that in cooperative you can go into the red key room if people die trying to get it, before they raise the floor.

Still funny watching Romero show off the rising inner part of the E1M3 donut in A Visit to id Software, explaining it with those same words, while leaving the other pits untouched.

hey, in the PSX version the acid ring has no middle hole, it's just flat... when I first played it, after the lowly snes version no less, I knew something was missing but I couldn't put my finger on it.

I at least remember dying in the Knee-Deep in ZDoom remake of e1m3 in that oval shaped acid pit when I was exploring for secrets. Does that count?

The platform is also a lot lower, so there is no more inescapable pits going around it either. I like that area in the PSX, as there is one less pit to get stuck in and having to restart the level.

I haven't played anything past E1M2 yet. :-( The original DOS controls are awkward for me, GZDoom refuses to run the shareware version, and I don't want to buy it from Source because their background programs eat my computer's memory. However, I've died in Doom 2's acid pits an embarrassing number of times.

Isn't there inescapable pits in Map06(The Crusher)? in that small outside area in the red door? or have I got my Dooms confused?

Which version of GZDoom and how are you running it? The only problem I remember encountering is this one -

Execution could not continue.

You cannot -file with the shareware version. Register!
