I had found the exit to E2M9 on E2M5 back in the day, but nothing more on Doom 1 (all other secret exits are much harder to figure out). Zilch on Doom 2 too... but I did find the exit to Pharaoh and Caribbean on Final Doom: TNT

I've never been able to find out how to get the secret that is in that computer room near the sergeant pillar that lowers..

spoiler - highlight to read:

Jump down from the pillar to the side opposite the chaingun. Use the switch in the green slime, in front of the rad suit, and a door opens. Go up the stairs that have been revealed and hit a switch you find above. That reveals the chainsaw in the computer room.

I actually found the E1M9 secret through SNES Doom. The E2M9 is accessed differently on the SNES, but it's rather easy to find, and I found it. For E3M9 on SNES, you don't even have to rocket jump to get into the box. I guess this is because rockets don't push you away and it seems that no matter what, one rocket will kill you (if you don't have the invulnerability).

I translated my discovery onto the PC, but found out that E2's secret level seems to be accessed another way. I used a guide to find out, same for E4.

Doom 2 secrets levels, I found legitimately, after wandering long time.

For Master Levels, the steps to reaching the secret exit (before the arch-vile) really seem like they're necessary to reach the normal exit.

I didn't bother doing much with Final Doom.

We only had Shareware Doom and Doom2 growing up

Do you mean shareware Doom and full version Doom 2 or shareware of both? I may be wrong, but there might not be a shareware Doom 2.

There was a demo version of Doom95 that came with some Doom 2 maps or only MAP01, I recall. Exceedingly rare, though. It was also labeled as "demo" instead of just shareware. Memory may be playing tricks on me, but I could take a look at my 1996 shareware CDs and see if I can actually find it.

Update: nothing so far. I dug up some shareware CDs I was fooling around with in 1996-1997 but I only found two "normal" versions of Doom95 shareware with DOOM1.WAD. I vaguely recall that there was a midi of D_RUNNIN accompanying the whole thing and that it was explicitly stated that it was a "single map demo" of MAP01. I'll keep looking.

It was a long time ago, but I think I might have stumbled upon the secret exit in Doom 2 by accident -- probably while running around flipping switched with iddqd on until I found an area I'd never visited before (so I was cheating, but at least didn't use idclip or a walkthrough). The MAP31 secret exit was similar to a secret area in Wolfenstein 3D, so I know I found that one...

I might have found the E4 exit myself (if so it was probably the same way I found the MAP15 exit in Doom 2). I know I read about the E1, E2 and E3 secrets before trying them, though.

Oh, and I don't think I would have figured out the trick to MAP30 myself; a friend's father explained how to win the game to us after he completed it.

I found them all except for E3M9 which I idclev'ed to some years after beating the game. I later read about how to get to it legitimately on this website. It was such an 'out of the box' way to get to an area in Doom, it never would have occurred to me in a million years to get there like that. I wish I had figured it out on my own, tho. Although.. it is possible to run to it without using the RL if you angle yourself just so (at least in zdoom anyway).

I wonder how many people found the super secret level on doom 2 without cheating? I was a big fan of Wolfensetein so it wasn't so tricky for me to find it. But if you weren't... I dunno... seems like most people would have not found it. I'm curious how many people did... Ima make a poll.

I found most of the ones from Doom 1 and the early levels of Doom 2 legitimately. Many of the secrets in the later levels I found out from playing online coop. I know there are a lot more secrets I haven't ever found though. I don't really like running around and DSNOWAYing all over the walls though.
