I would but seeing as I only have one map out there at the moment, http://planetdoom.gamespy.com/View....ps.Detail&id=16 which is not exactly without it's flaws, I wouldn't wanna try contributing only to balls it up.

I just started revising it anew (I think my other version was a bit over the top and not true to the nature of the map--now I am attempting to add things to it that id might have conceivably done--so... you know, low detail.

E3M7 is most helly in my opinion. Rivers of blood in stone structures really reinforces the "organized evil" theme, which contrasts with the mishmash of the other levels.

The only other thing which really adds to the atmosphere is the sky. You can't get a better snapshot of hopeless desperation than running from demons toward that seemingly endless landscape of burning red mountains.

I prefer the PSX Doom version. It's got much better music, and the animated sky is amazing. The definitive Hell level in Doom for me.

I did not like E3M1 or E3M2 very much, or E3M4 very much either. All the other levels I had great fun on though. E3M2 always confused the shit out of me. E3M9 was definitely my favorite of the bunch.

Episode 3 feels almost deserted on Easy mode. Even on hard, E3M7 has only 40 enemies. It gives you that feeling that something is wrong - hence Episode 4 and Doom 2.

Episode 3 texturing seems to be a bit random on some maps, but that could just have been Sandy's rush to complete the full mapset.

Some maps do are interesting, though, such as The Unholy Cathedral. I think that it's one of the most atmospheric levels in E3.

Episode 3 is more action packed than Episode 2, while the other one is creepier.

E3M7 is more about doing things in the right order and not falling foul of the toxic red stuff. This strategy element makes it a different kind of challenge, certainly doesn't feel wrong to me.

I recently played all Doom 1 episodes a month ago when I got into another Doom craze and I haven't played Doom 1 in like 10 years, so it was interesting (so used to having the super shotgun). Surprisingly, I remembered this episode being harder, but I found ammo conservation to be problematic in a few areas. Other than that, I remembered how much I hated levels E3M5 and E3M7.

E3 maps aren't very monster intensive, instead the maps themselves and their obstacles seem to be the focus of this episode. So, if you don't like a lot of running around in atmospheric levels you might not enjoy E3 as much.

Three, actually (there is a Baron involved). I really like the way that all four major enemies are in that level in quick succession.

The one thing they should've fixed in E3 were the E1 textures that appeared in certain places. Ex - E3M3. As much as I like that level, the whole area with UAC textures ruins the atmosphere that the level takes place in hell. As a result, it feels like a E2 level (mixing the two styles together). I thought they should've made E3 fully gothic/hell textures. Other than that though, it has some of my favorite levels in it, E3M6, which I love because of how open and combat worthy it is, and E3M9, since it's a fun M1 mashup with neat twists.

I agree with the ones mentioning a revisit to Episode 3.

Less Episode 1 remakes, lets have an Episode 3 remake!

Watching that video of PSX Doom's Limbo really reminds me of my first play of that level, it was one of the most amazing levels in the game up till that point for me, and I got to play Tower of Babel instead of Dis afterward, so I wasnt let down in any way. In PSX Doom though, Episode 3 was "Hell part one", as Episode 4 and a few new maps were the resto f hell. The last level, Threshold of Pain, even had a giant arena at the very end, I felt it was a very fitting end to the Doom section of the game. Although starting the Doom 2 segment right after with all my weapons intact was terrible, haha

Slough of Despair is probably my favorite E3 map, both thematically and gameplay-wise. The song is great too.

That's only because you like "scrooge" type maps where you're scrounging for ammo while a bald shotgun sergeant guy sneaks up on you and pumps you full of hot, manly lead, dawg. I bet you don't even pick the chaingun, given the opportunity, just to keep using those "100% accurate pistol shots" :-p
