The timing was just fine for me if it wasn't that I had to go on a long trip that day.

I finished mine, but I got distracted by RL things and missed the time limit. I can still upload if you want.

The timeframe probably seems too constricting for most. Maybe expanding to a sort of monthly/bimonthly week-long "Midiweek" or something would get more people to contribute.

The first session managed to extricate 4 midis out of nowhere within a two hour time frame. Now that the sessions are being made longer with a view to allowing more people to join and for participants to work on their entries for longer, I'm getting less people appearing. :S

I imagine that with the way things are going right now, if the time span was made any longer at all, people would just ignore the sessions entirely. What if in the middle of "MIDIweek", nobody came up with anything for a day? The thread would get pushed down and soon forgotten, and nothing else would happen until the week was up. :( That's the way I see it, anyhow.

By all means do. If anyone else who wanted to participate wants to share what they have so far anyway, please go ahead and do so. It just won't be made part of this week's session, or really counted as a speedMIDI.

But this is what irks me: this is speedMIDIing, so the idea is to work on something and submit whatever you can come up with, regardless of how in/complete it is. That's the point of a constricting time frame, too, in that it is meant to encourage you to adjust your working pace and time management to account for any obstacles that may bar you from coming up with something totally perfect. No one's passing judgement here, so it's okay to submit something that sounds like crap.

Eh, I'd like to continue holding these sessions, but they won't prove terribly fruitful going at this rate. :|

How about a 3-day period? Also, how about differing styles? Speaking for myself, I found it pretty tricky to write a song with a Kalimba in it and sound god, and not like a regular track with the instrument tacked on.

EX:

"3-day period! All users must submit their creations to me by 12AM GMT whenever"

"UserX, you need to write a song that has no electronic instruments!"
"UserY, you must write a song at 100BPM!"

etc.

Here's what I made.

Sorry, circumstances meant that I only had an hour or so last night to work on this, which really wasn't enough.

Well, I personally would rather break the rules and submit an okay-sounding midi than submit one that sounds like crap. (Of course, I'd rather not have to break the rules in the first place, but that's not your fault.)
I'm basically using these not for exercises in speed-writing, but rather for inspiration and motivation to actually finish something that I start. And as long as there's some vague indication of a time limit (even if I'm not paying any attention to it), that seems to be enough motivation to get it done. I only spent 2-3 hours on this in total (which is how much I would've spent within the time limit), so it's still sort of following the speed rules, in a way.
Anyway, I still think these are a good idea.

I wasn't in the mood for some reason. Cool songs you guys. :)
I liked the 2-hour time limit from the first session, but maybe you could give people a weekend or a week to make a midi (but they can only spend two hours on the midi during the weekend/week)? I dunno.

I would have made a MIDI, but I worked all day and then I was tired, there was also the fact that it was daylights savings time which means an hour of sleep was lost.

How about accepting any format of music, not just MIDI?

I think part of the problem is that there just really isn't a big enough group of people on here that know much about composing midi music, although I could certainly be wrong about that. So if that's the case, it makes it kind of hard for the small volume of composers to meet all of the requirements needed for the sessions. Some may not be available that day or time period and others may just not be interested, which leaves you only a handful of people who are able to contribute in the first place. So with that in mind, perhaps it would be best to try out some of the things that have been suggested - i.e. extend the deadline by a whole day or two, open it up to other musical formats, and maybe do away with the theme restriction for the first few sessions, at least until you start to get a good number of entries. It's an idea anyways :)

Then again, I know next to nothing about midi sequencing. Ignore me if all of that sounds like rubbish :P

Slightly related to this, and it's not a thing that's going to help a lot, but why not mention the session period in the thread name? That way everyone could see when it is without having to read the thread. Might make it easier not to miss it. Maybe.

Infurnus: Your midi was okay. Is there any reason that the song stretches out to an hour and three quarters because of random notes/controllers in the last 2000 bars? o_O

I'm assuming it wasn't exported correctly? It should have been no more than 6 minutes total.

Edit: I can't seem to find anything wrong with it, but I tried saving it with an older midi editor and it definitely added on 10 minutes of nonsense and messed up the channels.
The program I originally used to make the midi(MIDI Tracker) is pretty bizarre and has weird anomalies about it, so I wouldn't doubt it messed it up. (I discourage any serious midi musician from purchasing MIDI Tracker, it's overpriced, underfeatured, and will break your songs more than half the time.)

Edit 2: Managed to fix it, took a while but I somehow got it to export properly. I replaced the old one: [link]
