If no IWAD Material was used in a PWAD at all (no matter what lumps were used), the repository would be more compact. Maybe someone can start a legal-idgames repository, then sell CDs of it for $5.

Few good megawads are completely legal in the sense that they only include material that: 1) the author made, 2) that the author has permission for, or, 3) was originally included in the IWAD that the megawad is meant to be played with.

A lot of good megawads include textures from different games, or other places entirely. For example, AV is one amongst many to use the red animated portal texture from Hexen.

Finding ones that don't even have modified versions of textures from the IWAD they're meant to be played with, would narrow it down even further. Using your methodology, I doubt we'd be left with a lot of interesting material, to be quite honest....

I thought that the original and translated versions of the game were separate, and that you had to choose which to buy.

I wasn't talking about the CEO-approved practice of using stuff from the IWAD directly in PWADs for the same game; I was talking about copying data from a IWAD (doom2f) to PWADs designed for another IWAD (doom2).

Well, you do.

It is the same IWAD, it's just a French translated version that has a different filename.

Frankly this seems to be delving into major league pedantism if you ask me. I really don't see why there's any reason at all to care or be worried about this stuff.

Yeah, a different product and a different version of a product are not the same thing. Unlike DOOM.WAD and DOOM2.WAD, for example, the English and French versions of DOOM II are interchangeable.

I'm planning to package up all the modified graphics from the French IWAD into a PWAD that I'll be uploading to the idgames archive along with a dehacked patch, so other people interested in seeing what it's like to play in French can see for themselves.[/B]
It looks like you've gone ahead and done it...which means it's too late to say...wow, that's way too much effort! Should've made a binary patch from doom2.wad to doom2f.wad using bsdiff or xdelta or something, it'd be just as (il)legal and less fiddly.

I'm also planning on releasing a binary patch (is that upgrade? downgrade? sideways-grade?)

Yeah, I remember this version.

Glad you found it finally, Simon.

And the translations are as painful as it gets to a french ear :)

Nice Job Fraggle!!!

I just made an IWAD-Patch for DOOM2 V1.9:

You can download the patch for DOOM2.WAD V1.9 to DOOM2F.WAD V1.8 here:
http://doomgate.de/_other/d2v19_to_d2fv18.7z

All other DOS files included in the french version (doom2.exe, Setup.exe etc...) can be found within this archive:

http://doomgate.de/_other/d2f18noIWAD.7z

I'll update the LaDoPaTo (LAzy DOomers PAtching TOol) to support this version in the near future (if I can find my crappy sourcecode again...).

Thanks for the hard work you put in there, Fraggle.

A pity those translations by Art of Words are really poor.
As an example, for level 07, they translated "Dead Simple" into "L'herbe de la mort", which means something like "The grass of death".
It doesn't make sense and sounds silly. As a kid, I'm glad I grew up with the US version :o

Over at the French forums we tried to gather interest into proposing new strings, or correcting the worst mistakes, but we had disagreements and overall it seemed many people thought using the US version was better.
Same goes for the language pack in ZDoom and derivatives, we often use English.

The French translation is still appreciated by those who cannot get into English though.

Good find anyway, and again, thanks for the effort.

Will you also add the versions of tnt.wad and plutonia.wad from the id-anthology? There are some minor differences, and at least one map is very likely to cause demos to desync.

That'd be a good idea. The relevant stuff can be found on the IWADs' own pages here: http://doomwiki.org/wiki/IWAD

Speaking of the patching tool, has anyone gotten it to run on 64-bit Windows 7? I used it fine on 32-bit, but it's crashing with a runtime error 53 (with no dll mentioned) whenever I click on my iwads. I used Dependency Walker on it and found two dlls were missing, but even with those in place it still crashes. Running it as an admin/in compatibility mode doesn't help either.

I already did; it was probably the very first thing I did as soon as I got my copy of French Doom II.

Ooops. I can confirm this. 'LaDoPaTo' uses the VB 'ShellExecute' and
'ShellAndWait' functions, which seems to have some issues with Win7/64.

Maybe in the future I'll give it a try with VisualStudio 2010, but not now. Maybe a bunch of batches would be the better solution ;-)

EDIT/UPDATE:
I prepared a bunch of patchfiles (including 'french' doom and the fixed
Final DOOM-Anthology-version for the IWADS which can be applied using BSPATCH.EXE (included) from the command line. All patches work to and from Ultimate DOOM/DOOM2 V1.9 and the 'ordinary' Final Doom
(Non-fixed / Collectors Edition)

http://doomgate.de/content/files/ladopato/index.html

EDIT/UPDATE 2 (20110118):
Even better is Peter Vaskovic's Iwad patcher, which is available
here:
http://user.cs.tu-berlin.de/~phenex/JIWadPatcher/
and here:
http://doomgate.de/content/files/ladopato/index.html

Please notice, that there is a Java-version, which runs on all major platforms :-) GREAT JOB, Peter!

Cool. I've taken years of French but not enough to notice the mistakes. The only foreign copy of Doom I have is Japanese. It's on floppies so I've been unable to load it up because I'm too lazy to find a floppy drive. Since Japanese stuff has English stuff all over it, I was curious to see if the wad was actually modified. The case says "3-D Alien Busters" in big letters on the top. I can't seem to spot an image of it on google. I think there's a picture of it in the id Anthology book.

Oh gawd, I would like to see the scan or at least the photo of case! Also I believe this could be a PC98 version of Doom.

PC98 series of computers architecture is basically the same as IBM PC, but has some differences in interrupts and use some different bus, so the software is not compatible. Anyway, a copy of Doom 1 or Doom 2 (yes, both of them were ported) for PC98 would be probably rarer than this French Doom 2.
