Don't judge the game on how it works in zdoom. In Vanilla it usually takes two or three (forget which) when you get up close. It's still a pretty weak boss, though.

I guess it depends on the situation, but I'm more likely to sweat a Cyberdemon more than I would a Spider Mastermind. With the Cyberdemon, one bad dodge and you're done maaaan. You can get nicked by the mastermind a few times and still be safe, and as long as there's enough cover, they're really easy to take out.
