He converted to some branch of religion, though I'm not sure if it's really accepted as Christianity (someone earlier mentioned that it was criticized by christians). Because of this conversion, he quit Doom and such.

If I remember, Jive did fix some mistakes in one of my older megawads and that's what I will remember him for. Shame he quit Doom because of religious reasons but even more of a surprise he bit the bullet now.

Sad to hear. A few of his Legacy-conversion megaWADs were among my first PWAD playthroughs, and seeing his enthusiasm behind the legacy collection / review page was very refreshing. Rest in peace, Jean, where The Sky May Be.

Yes, its sad that he died.

But we all are getting older and in a few years, there will be only
memorial threats and nothing else.

BTW: Interesting thought, that cancer causes christianization.

What?? I didn't know any of this! I remember Jive's website from back in the day when I started playing PC Doom. Jive had a massive collection of wads and megawads on his site, not all of excellent quality, but the colour and enthusiasm of his site really got me. I even exchanged a couple of messages with him about using his Doom 1 to Doom 2 texture wad, not exactly a memorable thing, but he seemed perfectly decent to me.

Let's face it, who wouldn't go a bit mad if they knew they were dying of cancer? Some people lose the plot after a relationship break up or a non-fatal car crash. Would anyone just carry on living their normal lives after being told they're basically doomed? Would your current world view survive if you knew your world was coming to an end?

It's sad to hear he went off the rails but I can't blame him at all, and I won't speak ill of him now he's gone. On the other hand, I hate to say this, but I'd like to see some of these threads.

So sad that someone whose name I've known for so long wound up like this.

I want to quote a post Jive made back in 2002:

Jive once said:
Finally, I am in love of all the promoted authors at DLW. It's why I do a so hard work to bring them at the top! ...and it's why I'm so sad if an author don't understand my goal!

That was amazing. Amen.

His website and Youtube channel imply that he was Catholic, so yeah: pretty sure that counts as Christian.

(someone earlier mentioned that it was criticized by christians).
Where is this?

Jive fell in the clutch of some weird guru. Definitely not a mainstream religion. A few years ago I googled that Arnaud Dumouch guy and only found some guy ranting about his "bullshit" on some Catholic forums. Now it seems he has a much larger web presence, with youtube vids and interviews.

I don't remember exactly what the Catholic forum guy reproached to Dumouch's theology. A few discussions on the French Wikipedia show his controversial status: here, here, here.

Didn't find the old link because I don't remember much about it and there's now a ton of less disparaging results first. I don't want to bother looking him up online too much, but when I make the sum of self-proclaimed theologian without actual degrees in the field + self-published author + tells converts to sever their ties with their previous life + preys on emotionally vulnerable people such as a weirdo with a cancer, the result I get is crook and nefarious sect leader.

Jive, the elder, French-speaking DooM statesman from South America. If nothing else, he brought color to the DooM community. And, while he was occasionally misunderstood, his heart was in the right place.

Peace to you and your loved ones.

This is how I'll always remember Jive. One of the few people whose picture was what I expected after reading their posts.

I remember Jive, and I am saddened to hear of his passing.

Back when I was playing Doom via Doom Legacy a long time ago, he had a site with a ton of wads made for Legacy (my favorite was a compilation of megawads called "The Cobra Series"). I tried to download his wads but the links no longer seem to work, which is a fucking shame.

Why, I still remember the time we exchanged e-mails one year and got banned from his inbox.

R.I.P. Jive, you'll be missed. :(

Son of a bitch :(

Jive was a cool guy back in the day. Despite what he did to wads his archive of hard to find ones was quite something. I remember we used to chat a lot back then about that sort of stuff and he even hosted some of the hard to find ones that I had found.

I was not aware that he had gone off the deep end like that, but he always was a little eccentric I guess so not a surprise. He will be missed regardless.

I remember someone linking his Wikimedia page a couple years or so ago. Back then I was questioning/had just lost my faith and was terrified that something bad was going to happen to me and I was going to become super fundamentalist and quit Doom.

Sorry to hear he's passed. RIP

I remember making the mistake of asking him about Doom in a time period after he had left it behind, wasn't pretty.

Condolences regardless to his loved ones.

What a shame. He seemed a good man to me. We exchanged a few mails regarding broken links on DLW an arseload of years ago and something about one of his problematic wad enhancements.

I think I read somewhere he had this custom pinball machine business going on and granted he normally tended to take WAD criticism more personally than other people.

Rest in peace Jive.
