What's inside the original directory for the DOS version of Final DOOM? Just curiosity.

There's two directories for each IWAD (essentially it's almost like two games), the default paths by the installer are C:\PLUTONIA and C:\TNT

They basically look like this:

And to be even more specific, (in case confusion results of different date orders), those have the timestamp 1996-06-10 01:00:02 for all the files (the seconds aren't shown in the DIR listing). DOS doesn't have timezones properly, so installing them on Windows (assuming you have a version that supports DOS) might not actually result in those timestamps.

May I ask what it helped you with?

And for what it's worth, some versions of the id Anthology came with an updated Final Doom. I don't have it or the installers for it; there's some information about it here and patches here.

As far as the patch goes, doom2.exe is 722629 bytes in both directories with the timestamp of 1996-10-09 17:17:30, plutonia.wad is 18240172 bytes and a timestamp of 1996-11-21 15:58:06, and tnt.wad is 18654796 bytes with a timestamp of 1996-11-14 12:10:34

I happened to find the tnt and plutonia in my friends house plus their doom2.exe and I wanted to setup an approximation of how the original directory existed under my dosbox setup

Was there ever a DOS release of Final Doom? I've always heard that it was distributed with Doom95. I never owned the original Final Doom disc, though, just the Collector's Edition. It's been so long since I've used either that disc or UDoom's, though, so for all I know they've got both Doom95 and the full DOS executables on there. Think I'll go check while I'm thinking about it...

[EDIT] Yep. If it's anything like my UDoom disc, it's indeed got the full DOS installer and everything. The discussions I'm remembering were phrased in the context of the actual Final Doom authors never being credited properly in that they were distributed with Doom95, which doesn't show the ENDOOM screen. And indeed it's probably easier for most users to use it than figure out how to get the original DOS ones working. ;)

But yes, using the Final Doom .exe will autodetect either PLUTONIA.WAD or TNT.WAD just fine (though if you put both in the same dir it'll only use one or the other, can't remember which). I set it up on my DOS machine as separate game directories as shown and it works like a charm.

The CD has both Doom95 (both an installer and ready-to-run off the CD, with the uncompressed WADs in the root) and the installers for DOS.

This is why I didn't buy it when it first came out, the system requirements on the box implied that it would only work with Win95. I didn't realize at the time that it also came with the DOS executables or that I could just run the WADs with doom.exe or doom2.exe. :-P

Huh? My RePlay edition of Final Doom clearly stated that it also ran in DOS, and it also had the Win95 and DOS requirements side-by-side, with DOS's being lower of course.

I didn't get it with a box, so I honestly don't know what the box it came with claimed. I'm actually not even sure if it's a US-version or some other, if there even were any differences between worldwide releases.

The only Final Doom release I own that doesn't support DOS is in The Collector's Edition from 2003.

Speaking of Final Doom, I saw on the Doom Wiki that there was a bug in Final Doom in which the Z position on the map wasn't accounted for when the player teleported, which meant that the player would "fall" to the teleport spot or be stuck beneath the floor where he teleports.

Is this true? Where did this happen? I've played Final Doom on several different source ports, like Doom95, ZDoom, Doomsday, Chocolate Doom, and Boom.

Did it happen with the vanilla exes?

Sure it's true (at least, the player falls sometimes when teleporting - I don't believe that he can be trapped below the floor as a result of this bug). But the bug is in the exe rather than the wad. Play PrBoom-plus using "-complevel 4" or Chocolate Doom with "-gameversion final" (which both emulate Final Doom's version of Doom2.exe) and you'll notice it very quickly.

(Or of course use Final Doom's version of Doom2.exe itself, but I assume you don't have it, since you're asking this question.)

That's actually one of the bugs fixed in the id Anthology version. And to reproduce it with Chocolate Doom, you indeed have to use "-gameversion final" since for plutonia.wad/tnt.wad, Chocolate defaults to "-gameversion final2" (id Anthology doom2.exe emulation).

I took a look on MobyGames. Skimming over both sides at first, I have to admit seeing the Windows logo on the back of it made me jump to the same conclusion CODOR had, but on closer inspection, the front of it does say "Windows 95 & MS-DOS": http://www.mobygames.com/game/dos/f...meCoverId,3965/
